that's not bad with the cash back on that Visa card... yeah, just from standing in line at the bank I was talking to a gentleman and we were both complaining about the gas prices, he said he just sold his boat because of high gas prices, and his son sold his Cobra Mustang, it's really a shame

(oh and I have to correct myself I meant 4.38 for diesel) A lot of people I know are making small sacrifices by driving less, or not taking their boats out keeping the muscle cars garaged all summer instead of enjoying them like they should. I know a friend who's keeping his GTO mostly garaged this summer.

Surprisingly I was out on Woodward Ave (Where the annual Woodward Dream Cruise is held) a couple weekends back. During the summer it's really big with the gear heads and they all cruise on Woodward and have car meets at local bars, dealerships, etc. I thought that due to the rise in gas prices we were going to see less people out cruising, but there seemed to be just as many people out there as there have been in the previous years (I just noticed a lot more turbo 4's than I did V8's this year) but glad to see that's not stopping the car enthusiasts.

^^ Luckily we're only about 30 miles or so from the Eagle Point refinery up in Paulsboro... So regular is still floating around $3.40 a gallon... plus we use a store-branded Visa that gives us 5% back on all of our purchases there - including gas. So thankfully, since we pay it off at the end of every month, we're really only paying about $3.23/gal at current prices.

It's still way too much though... because of which I haven't run my Grand Wagoneer pretty much at all in the past month or so... 10-12mpg was fine when gas was 2 bucks a gallon, but anymore I'll only run the old gal when we have to haul something. It really is a shame... the gas prices are putting a lot of old classics off the road.

lol AMGoff FTF doesn't have any solid proof, and you are completely right where he gets his figures from... His ass, exactly why I call him out every time he spews his crap on here. Ford is never going to put a Twin Force 415hp V6 in anything but a F150 or Expedition, unless it's a luxury uber sedan those kinds of #'s probably wont' make it in a Taurus, although both the G8 and Charger have 400hp+ engines, but because they are V8's. Although it's a great concept and a better alternative I don't see it happening. Oh btw I drove down the street this morning on my way to work and saw that gas in metro Detroit was $3.98 for premium and $4.38, lol guess i'm going down from premium to mid grade for a little while...

The only good thing about the SHO was that beautiful Yamaha built engine. It was a shame to see such a great engine inside such a horrible car.

Just as a refresh... pretty much every source of information regarding the upcoming family of Twin-Force engines breaks them down like this, the ones marked with a "*" are currently on the table, but nothing definitive:

2.5L TF I4 - up to 260HP
3.5L TF V6 - generally range from 350-420HP
*5.0L TF V8 - speculated 400HP with increased torque over the 3.5
*6.2L TF V8 - for "Super-Duty" applications, which could make as much as 650lb-ft of torque.

FordTaurusFanboy.... Have you done even the slightest bit of research on this new family of "Twin-Force" engines?? I'm thinking not, because you keep pulling these fantastical numbers seemingly from nowhere but your ass. If you happen to have an actual source for these numbers, I'd love to see them... because after several searches, I've yet to find anything which even remotely correlates with your claims.

Unless you're just cherry-picking numbers and spinning them out of context... You know, like before when you claimed the SHO was *far* more powerful than a W-body... and used the performance specs from a base '96 3.1L Regal to "prove" your claim, despite failing to even mention the 3.8L version (not to even mention your failure to post figures for the later supercharged 3.8) in your quest to compare "apples to apples?"

Either way... I wouldn't be surprised if we only ever saw the 4 & 6 cylinder TFs... I'd be wholeheartedly shocked if the V8 variants actually came to fruition... but still - I'd like to see these huge power figures you keep touting!

^^ Good lord... we've been through this already. Is your memory that poor? First off, the SHO didn't own the segment... and as you so astutely liked to compare apples to apples... the N/A 3.8 W-bodies matched up well against the earlier V6 SHOs... and the later S/C 3.8 W-bodies churned out more HP and a lot more torque.

And once again... you're pulling these hypothetical numbers for the Twin-Force engines out of your ass... I already posted the numbers for the I4 and V6 TFs engines... as well as the proposed numbers from Ford for the possible TF V8s.. and they don't come close to your claims of 650-850HP.

The SHO was a weird idea for the time. It was, like its styling, ahead of its time.

The Car was not always received well. I mean, who wants a family car that can hang with Camaros and Mustangs. It seemed a horrid waste, but it was the very essence of a muscle car. That being to take a ho-hum car and really pump it up. Most muscle cars did not do well in reliability until a serious wrench jock gave it a thorough once-over to swap out the cheap parts with higher quality bits.

While the more mature view of a new SHO is colored by notions of much more expensive cars that today's cash strapped, credit overloaded, masses really can not or do not want to afford in such numbers anymore, I find the discussion a valid one. FORD needs some gusto and excitement to draw buyers.

I would completely opt for a sharper handling car with a hotter but not necessarily insane engine. You don't want to scare off the the curious "soccer mom".

My preferred load out would read as:
Engine: "Twin Force" V6 (415shp)
Drive layout: Read biased AWD with some form of active handling similar to ACURA's SH-AWD. To be used in other FORD and LINCOLN vehicles to divest cost across numerous models. Actually I think the MKZ already something like that.
Transmission: Manual or automated manual or automatic with paddle shifters (must have six speeds).
Brakes: swap them for heavy duty truck brakes. It worked for the 2003 SVT Mustang Cobra. Cost less too.
Body work: tactful and modest aero package. A small spoiler and diffuser. Keep it low key.

The Ford Taurus owned the AMerican Middle class Sedan performance car segment, and now a lowly Pontiac's Heavy V-8 G8 GPX produces 402 HP so you need @ least the Ford twin Force V-6 that produces 415HP.
But imagine what a Twin FORCE V-8 would produce! 650 to 850 HP the problem though is the gas price my friends. Stay thirsty my friends! Ford needs a high MPG 4 cylinder variant of the Taurus. 40MPG

I had a loaded 1991 SHO, and IMHO, it was fantastic. HemiRoadRunner might call it a grandma car. That's fine; to each their own. I'm sure many people did back then, too. That is, until we left the stoplight and all they saw were the grandma car's taillights. Today is different, but back then, you had to spend big money to keep up with it. It was just hilarious to consistently blow away other sports cars back then, when hardly anyone knew what a SHO was.

As far as reliability issues, I can't disagree with what happened to others, but I know that mine never had any kind of mechanical problem. And I thought the handling was great. The only things I didn't like were the torque steer (obviously), and that it used a cable manual, instead of a rod.

It's too bad that the SHO had to go out on such a bad note: on the worst body style of any Taurus, with a small V8 that was less powerful and more thirsty, and no manual option. Oh, and that skateboard spoiler, too. Sad.

I had a loaded 1991 SHO, and IMHO, it was fantastic. HemiRoadRunner might call it a grandma car. That’s fine; to each their own. I’m sure many people did back then, too. That is, until we left the stoplight and all they saw were the grandma car’s taillights. Today is different, but back then, you had to spend big money to keep up with it. It was just hilarious to consistently blow away other sports cars back then, when hardly anyone knew what a SHO was.

Funny enough... those Yamaha engines were one of the more reliable things about those cars.

And actually there was a Yamaha V8... the 3.5L V8 used in the later SHOs came from Yamaha... their only real problem was the relatively anemic power output for such an engine....

Close, the 3.0 was from 1989-2005 and 3.2 were in the 1992-95 models. The 3.0 was a MTX and the 3.2L was a ATX. You were close though. The 1996-1999 were all 3.4L V-8 ATX.

FYI - the SHO model was available in the first three generations of the Taurus. The 3.0 SHO V6 was available in the first ('89-91) and second ('92-95) and both were standard with 5-speed MTXs (backing up n_b_e's comment). The first ATX was in '93 with a 3.2l. The Yamaha V8 was in the third gen ('96-99) with only an ATX (sorry A4). That should clear things up a bit...

Once again an automaker is looking to the past instead of charging into the future! I didn't see anything wrong with the five hundred except it had a stupid name. 500 just didn't fit the car and it lacked power other than that it's not a bad looking car. Also what's with the letter game? Why can't Ford stick with one? They had SVO (my favorite), then SHO, then SVT.... Pick one already!

"Separation of the camshaft from its sprocket has been implicated in a growing number of engine failures, at around the 50,000 mile (80,000 km) mark."

"This problem can be rectified by having the camshafts welded."

They need to do better than a 300HP V6 to make it a head-turner. The V6 Camry is knocking on the door with 268 already.

lol it's all good. It's just funny because I really think due to the old tv series, it clouded the publics' perception of the Torino, and most people that are either old enough to actually remember the Torino, or knew of it don't think of the 69 Torino GT or the Torino with the Cobra Jet 428.

Like I said if Ford does the next gen Taurus right , I think they can pull it off.

I think this is beyond the consideration phase. The 3.5 Ecoboost with 340 hp (no, the Accord does not come close to that) is destined for the 2010 Taurus after its refresh. I doubt Ford will go manual, but it will be manumatic. The gas mileage should be almost the same as the current AWD Taurus.

As far as size, well, the Taurus is big. However, there is supposedly also a Fusion sport model (possibly with a manual) in the works for 2010MY.

Original SHO was hurt by the lack of manual(4spd auto) and the brakes were not great. The chassis was surprisingly good and Yamaha motor was great. V6 would not fit in the escort and not designed w/rwd in mind(no T-bird).
