Ford confirms purpose-built Police Interceptor to replace Crown Vic

11/13/2009, 12:35 PM

By Andrew Ganz

The police car wars are heating up: Just weeks after General Motors announced it will import the Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle, Ford confirmed today that it is planning to produce a purpose-built Police Interceptor to replace its dated but loved Crown Victoria.

The development officially confirms the demise of the Crown Victoria, as well as its Panther platform Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car cousins, in late 2011. The Crown Victoria has long been a favorite of police officers in North America for its durability.

Ford didn’t release any additional details on the car’s specifications other than its name, Police Interceptor. Speculation and rumors point to a rear-wheel-drive base to compete closely with the Caprice and Dodge’s increasingly popular Charger. The company says it will release details during the first quarter of 2010. A taxi variant is likely and would help Ford fill capacity at its assembly plants. Up to 60,000 police units are expected to be built annually, Ford says.

To develop the fleet-only car, Ford says that it has worked closely with a number of police officers across the country who took part in the Ford Police Advisory Board. Over the last 14 months, the group has met to discuss the new car’s key features.

“Ford’s commitment to the law enforcement community produced the Crown Victoria, the benchmark police vehicle,” said Lt. Brian Moran, fleet manager of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and a member of Ford’s Police Advisory Board, in a statement released to the media. “This commitment has continued, and Ford has been working closely with the Police Advisory Board on developing the new Police Interceptor. I am confident that the next-generation Ford police vehicle will meet the future needs of the law enforcement community and will set the new standard.”

Sorry I just read the title and it made me smile. Now that I’ve read it I can say something. Seems like a smart idea for them to do. Sit with the people who will use the car, and ask them what they need. That just gives me hope that the big wigs at Ford will one day sit with me and ask me what I want on my car! lol jk

Maybe it will be another facelift of the Crown Vic like they last did in 1998!!!

Wow, I’m still skeptical that the Vic, Grand Marquis and Town Car will ever die. They’ve been around years before I was born, I thought they would never die!

They did make a very strong point that this will be designed and engineered and built in the USA – so I wonder if this really is going to be RWD with the Falcon coming from Australia mate… Although – they still own the DEW98 platform and the Mustang could be enlarged as it was supposed to be for the concept Interceptor so it’s possible!

People often ask how much would they save with Camrys and Accords being so reliable and good MPG.
They cant take the abuse, pick ups and Crown Vics are much more durable.

I dunno…part of me wonders if US police vehicles should be a bit less aggressive–somewhat more like the four cylinder, front wheel drive, fuel efficient vehicles that dominate most european police forces. The latter seem less apt to encourage/attract the brash, aggressive, “chip on the shoulder” type cops. Especially with ‘no-chase’ polcies on the rise.

Then again, maybe the fact that seeing a murdered-out police Charger scares the hell out of me is a good thing.

…I’ve heard that in some parts of Colorado, such as Aspen, the cops drive 9-5s. Personally, I like the idea of a policeman in a Saab. Seems to connote a measured temper, and also practical capability. I always feel like the guys in the chargers/camaros/mustangs are going to beat me with a night stick!

those ford crown vics are total garbage, slow, heavy, can’t take a corner, really bad engineering. I’ve seen police chase videos where a cop in a crown vic can barely keep up with an older 4cyl honda accord packed with black guys!

@sh!t_between toes, you are right except 40 years ago when car was introduced it was state of the art. This car is original Starsky and Hatch vintage (actually even a bit earlier). Like Jake mentioned, most of the bloggers were not even conceived when car started its arresting career.

Well atleast Ford is aware that killing the Crown Vic would’ve cost them. Another smart move on Fords side by making a purpose built police car. Now the other thing is, if they make a Taxi of the car as well, it should have a hybrid variant.

“Ford’s commitment to the law enforcement community produced the Crown Victoria, the benchmark police vehicle”

What a crock of sh*t. It’s like they expect us to believe that back in ‘89 the new skin was for police departments first and old men in hats second. Chrysler bailed on Fury/Diplomat in the late ’80s, Chevy bailed on the Caprice in the late ’90s… therefore by virtue of having done absolutely nothing Ford inherits the throne with it’s Crown Vic. Way to pat yourself on the back for being lazy.

So a buddy of mine owns a landscaping buisness, with a big ass dump truck with a snow plow. One day one of his employees goes off the deep end. Takes the Dump truck on a romp around town. Eventually the cops setup a road block to stop him, but he’s in a Dump Truck w/plow. Lets just say you would rather be in Crown Vic than a fuel efficient Corolla in this situation.

Maybe it’s just my inner redneck talking…but cop cars should be badass. No FWD 4 bangers. Just RWD coupes and sedans with big american V8’s. Cars that can haul ass when necessary and dish out a beating to some coked out gas station robber. That being said, I remember seeing a third generation Camaro as a cop car when I was a kid and thinking it was the most badass car on the road. Now I look back and I’m amazed I ever thought something with approximately 200hp was badass. Wow, times do change!

It’s got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it’s got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It’s a model made before catalytic converters so it’ll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new Bluesmobile or what?

Bottom line, Ford needs an IRS RWD global platform in its arsenal. It can be used for future Lincoln products, which are needed if Ford is going to maintain momentum and go upscale; A new mustang and hopefully a Falcon derivative in the spirit of the G8 for NA. Allan get’er done!!!;-)) A little taste of what’s possible:

My last “Bad A$$ Cop Car” experience was on the upper peninsula in Michigan, Iron County, going 80 in a 50. Although, I got off with 10 over – whew:-)

There is no such thing as a Cool Cop Car, especially when you drive sport/performance/gt cars! It just makes them enjoy writing the ticket even more!

pandering about the saabs in aspen, i would guess you guys didn’t know that the Colorado Highway Patrol also has an Impreza WRX STI and two chevy corvette zo6’s. I don’t know if they use them for stops of what, but i hope i never have to run from one of them! They also have some camaros, thake a look. I’m not sure where the corvettes can be found but the rest are all here, take a look.

I was hopeful that this “purpose-built” Interceptor replacement would essentially be a stretched 4-door Mustang.. taking advantage of the lighter, more compact and efficient chassis and the modern Mustang V8 arsenal. However, if they plan to also sell it to taxi fleets that probably wouldn’t work.

Ford has been taking input from the Police Advisory Board and they want, cheap, durable, proven, reliable, V8 power and RWD handling… and the only quick solution for Ford is…. stretched Mustang 4-dr platform with the new 5.0 V8 and 6-speed automatic!

This gives them proven reliability, RWD, V8 power and cheap because the Taurus platform is too expensive, not RWD (AWD is too expensive), no V8, EcoBoost is too expensive too. Plus, Police have been using Mustangs for years as chase vehicles so they know the platform, solid axle handling and durability… any arguments?

no exaggeration, dozens of cop cars on that trip down to canton (40+)…only slightly fewer on the way back…i have no lingering love for the traffic enforcement departments of ohio…

I’d almost rather Ford just start making speed cameras. I’d rather go 100mph between them and slow down when i know one is coming up than deal with douchebag troopers who have nothing better to do.

11/15, 11:41 AM

I think the best way to catch speeders would be to have a transmitter in every car, like on the license plate or something, that sends out a signal. The cops could use a special radar gun that picks up that signal and shows the speed. They record your transmitter’s coded signal number into a database and you get a ticket with your speed on it. Lets keep that hush hush for now though, i’d still like to be able to go a bit fast without moving to Germany!

My guess is that Transit full size will spawn a new police/livery/taxi sedan using much of the same chassis with a new “top hat”…I will also speculate that it will also produce a unibody F100…..by spreading the costs out over Transit full size, F100, and PI/taxi sedan…you get “economy of scale” and the desired durability in said sedan in a lower annual production rate and enhanced profit margins.
