Ford will not be building a sedan or wagon version of the Mustang, the company said in a statement to the press today. “Mustang is an icon and will continue in its current form: a unique, two-door, rear-wheel drive, 2+2 performance car,” the statement read. Ford didn’t rule out building retro sedans or wagons, but made it clear they would not bear the Mustang name.
Ford also announced it will reveal a new Lincoln rear-wheel-drive sedan concept at the Detroit auto show in January called “The Interceptor.” It is “based on the Mustang’s rear-wheel-drive architecture but it is not a Mustang,” Ford said. Back in March, Newsweek reported Ford was working on a retro “rear-wheel-drive family car based on the Mustang that’s coming at the end of the decade.”
Rumors began this week when Autocar and AutoWeek reported Ford was readying four- and five-door versions of the Mustang alongside the sixth-generation Mustang coupe for 2011. The reports also said Ford Australia was developing a new rear-wheel-drive platform for a variety of future Fords — a rumor that was shot down by spokesman Sinead McAlary.

It could also be a quick response to the situation. Something they learned a lot about when the wrong wheel drive Probe was to be the new Mustang.

From the views on the AutoWeek website, the design swag looks very interesting from both a sedan and coupe perspective. However, I completely agree that thinning the brand of the Mustang as a core drivers HP vehicle is not the right direction. I’d love to see some cues from that AW swag and put it in a RWD Ford (between the Fusion and the Five Hundred) and Lincoln (between the MKZ and the MKS) as a Taurus-sized competitor to the Maxima… it would be great to see a differentiating product but unclear as to how long it would take to deliver and how big the market is for that vehicle.

The picture of the Mustang sedan in the current (December 18, 2006) issue of AutoWeek was not placed there by some overenthusiastic teenage fan. This was a Ford design released as a trial balloon. It sank like a lead balloon and Ford wisely changed its mind.

What sucks about this is that the ‘attributes’ that make a Mustang would have made any subsequent models credible, even if it ‘corrupted’ the Mustang name.
If they produce a Ford Falcon, there will be no frame of reference for the general public and thus make it a more difficult sell.
And don’t give me this sacred cow malarkey; remember they are making a four door 911.
Everything is exploitable in the future.

Why is it that every bit of good news that Ford releases, bad news has to come with it? No Mustang sedans or wagons? GREAT! No new Aussie-developed platform for future RWD Fords? BOOO!

dew98… s-type…LS v8…thunderbird… hey what are we going to use for the mustang? hey, how about we design a solid-rear and reshape dew98? sounds good…
years pass
hey, what are we gonna do with the thunderbird? meh… can it… no point in trying to make an almost-attractive but slightly “fay” car closer….
hey what are we gonna do with the LS? meh… can it… we’ll use volvo’s P2 for everything! that rwd midsize sedan idea was the problem!
hey what are we gonna do with the s-type? let jaguar figure it out….
So… should we make a sedan version of the mustang? ok, makes sense… should we put an independent rear under it?
AM I LOSING MY MIND?!! someone go on a rampage and make ford kill every conventional car-based product in their pipeline and go into business selling the (should be) back in production GT, alongside the GR1 which is supposedly from the same platform (why not build both, eh? wouldn’t that help pay for it?)…. have ford of europe send over the mondeo and wagon versions, and ford trucks… you get a by… but that diesel that’s coming better be good!

If Ford wont do it, I will. I’ll weld the nose of a Mustang onto a Ford Explorer, pop in the seats out of a 1998 Crown Vic, and to make it really iconically horsey-like I’ll mount some longhorns on the hood.

Thank god. A Mustang sedan just wouldn’t seem right. If a new sedan and/or wagon are built on the same platform, that’s fine; advertise that they share the same architecture as the Mustang.

Enjoy your final days Mustang. The Camaro is going to eat you alive. Ford might as well build a “Going out of Business” Edition because that is what is going to happen when their precious Mustang rots on their damn lots because everyone would rather have a GM product.
Bye Ford, nice knowing ya!

the same camaro that looks like the mustang and takes on some styling cues as the mustang?? ha. GMrules, your biased blindness is starting to get to you..stop being a one sided d*uche bag and grow up. GM isnt the only good car company in the world. Ford has good cars as does GM and so does Dodge, it all depends on different peoples views. i wanna know what you think of the Aveo and HHR…
Anyways, i think ford should build a sporty 4door and wagon that could compete with the charger/magnum, with RWD and power. I hope that it doesnt look like the mustang though, the mustang should remain an icon. I would kill to have an Australian Falcon or the Euro Mondeo. If Ford were to produce a SVT fusion/fusion wagon, i would definatly buy one. The 500 is a decent car, i wouldnt mind having one, although there are others i would get.

Ford: USA– F-Series, Mustang, Taurus, 500, Freestyle, Ranger, Escape, Excursion, Econoline, Explorer, Expedition, Focus, GT,
That Leaves: Fusion (germany/mexico) , Crown Vic (Canada) Edge (Canada) Windstar/Freestar-Discontinued (Canada)
Chevy: USA — Cobalt, Malibu, Corvette, Uplander, Colorado, Trailblazer
SOUTH KOREA- AVEO - Rebranded Daewoo…
Canada- Impala, Monte Carlo, New Camaro, Equinox,
Mexico- HHR (the designer of the HHR is also the designer of the PT Cruiser - Chrysler), Avalanche,
Silverado (most come from canada, minority built in US)
Suburban & Tahoe(US & Mexico)
Before you go spiiting out useless crap, check ur stats. I would do chrysler and dodge but i have better things to do than prove you wrong.
2nd, The civic and corolla and mazda 3 are all better than the aveo, in most categories except price…. http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/reviews/healey/2004-05-20-aveo_x.htm USA today does a great job explaining the Aveo.
Now for the good part. You make it seem like you want GM to be the ONLY auto maker in the US. Your views also match Hitler, Communist Russia, China, and a lot of other facist and monopolistic views. If GM was the only car maker, they could make the POS aveo cost 40K and guess what, you wouldnt have a choice to get another one….so yeah, thats a great idea…
You are blinded by your love of GM. Im not saying GM is bad, i like a lot of their cars, as well as Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, Honda, Toyota.
US Automaker reliability ratings are going up now, almost even with the Asian car market, but people say that asian cars a much better, they are also blinded…
Game, Set, and Match.
I say good-day to you, sir.
