SEMA 2009: Ford, DeWalt team up for Super Duty Contractor Concept

11/03/2009, 2:52 PM

By Andrew Ganz

After Ford introduced its heavily upgraded 2011 Super Duty trucks earlier this year at the State Fair of Texas auto show, it was only a matter of time before the Michigan automaker unveiled a commercial-grade concept.

Designed to illustrate ways in which the Super Duty can benefit commercial consumers, the concept features a number of upgrades designed in conjunction with tool manufacturer DeWalt.

Based on a 2011 F350 XLT Crew Cab with a 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8, the four-wheel-drive truck has a SkyJacker 2.5-inch lift kit, Nitto Terra Grappler tires wrapping 22-inch American Force Trigger Wheels and, of course, a DeWalt-special yellow paint job.

Functional upgrades start with Ford’s Work Solutions computer system, which, among other features, helps users keep track of tools and fleet vehicles. Unique interior storage pieces designed by Work Gear Storage add to the useful appeal.

A Knapheide custom service body takes the place of a traditional bed. Articulating gull-wing-style doors with LED lights make it a veritable Swiss Army Knife on wheels, while a Warn winch can lift up to 770 lbs. into the Durabed-lined cargo bay. A live PTO hook up with hydraulic connections at the front and rear of the truck would help owners with pretty much any task imaginable.

I always love the DeWalt trucks. They’re like giant Tonkas with real tools. And they practically have everything.

Go go gadget… Nah, too goofy…

Break out the swiss army…. not big enough…

Tonka tough… C’mon I’m not five anymore! I do wish they still made their toy trucks out of steel though. First last and only toy truck your child will ever need. Might even hand it over to their kid someday.

FORD/DeWalt. Everything you need and tough enough to do everything you need. This you might hand over to you kid someday.

Nice idea, but I happen to remember a similar truck called the GMC Sierra Professional that I helped develop about ten years ago. I hope Ford will market this better than GM did.

Gee, something at SEMA that’s actually useful. How did they get that one past the event organizers.

It was one hell of a task to get a full picture of this thing without people standing in the way. It’s incredibly huge.

Really? All I see is a Super Duty that DeWalt modified and turned into a rolling toolbox, which is actually pretty cool.

“Hey buddy, you left your little man-step down.”

This truck looks awesome, well, let me take that back, it looks hideous, but useful.
For the cost of the tool-tracking computer, you could buy a new set of tools.
I like the lift-winch, but the front winch is a little silly. Would be nice if the lift winch could be used to pull loads onto a trailer (i.e. car hauling), but I’m not sure it could.
Live PTO is nice. As is hydraulic connections and air hose. Swing-out table saw is useful.

Imagine getting rear ended by it?
