Ford takes more than 1,500 orders for F-150 SVT Raptor

08/12/2009, 3:20 PM

By Andrew Ganz

Ford says that more than 1,500 orders have been placed for its radical, high-performance off road-oriented F-150 SVT Raptor truck – a figure that has maxed out capacity at the automaker’s River Rouge plant in Michigan.

The automaker says that more than 40 percent of the trucks ordered so far have been swathed in either Molten Orange or Tuxedo black and that most have been loaded up with a moonroof, the Luxury package (which includes heated seats and a premium audio system, among other features) and that over half have been equipped with the exterior graphics package.

As is the case with most high-performance vehicles, a good number of SVT Raptors will be tucked away as collectibles – Ford says about 16 percent of the mostly male buyers claim they purchased the truck because of its collectible value. Only 31 percent, however, say that they purchased the F-150 SVT Raptor for its off road ability.

Leftlane will be behind the wheel of a Raptor soon and we’ll be sure to report back our first drive impressions.

CADDY, you’d be surprised, alot of these buyers will actually use it off-road. This is more Wrangler, Xterra, etc territory – not Range Rover. I already talked to a guy already in talks with a dealer about one and he’s ready to get it covered in mud.

I’m not so sure about the collectible part. Where are all those SVT Lightning pickups that were the big rage not so long ago? They’re sitting on the back lot of Honest Henry’s Used Car Emporium collecting dust. I know, I’ve seen plenty of them. If you buy a Raptor just use it for its intended mission. If you want a collectible Ford go find a GT.

zfender, the article says 31% of buyers bought it for its off road ability. Thats more than 50. Like i said, this is more akin to the Wrangler crowd than it is to the Range Rover crowd. It will get off road use.

I’d buy mine in Orange w/graphics pack and with the Orange interior, if you are going to buy this thing, might as well be as abnoxious as possible! 99% of Porsches sold stateside will never take a hard corner or go north of 100mph. Same with Bimmers, Ferrarris, Lambos, and 98% of Vettes.

As such even if 10% of these Raptors see some dirt the average buyer is more genuine and less of a poseur than your typical sportscar buying homo or soccer mom.

I agree. That was one dumbass post. I mean, I actually felt dumber after reading that post. Hell most Americans wear a seatbelt to move their car in the driveway or to the street. But this truck evokes a wild side in me for some reason. I think this is the truck that we’ve been missing from the American truck fusion. This is what the Wrangler used to be about. But I don’t see a reason for owning this in suburban Dallas, TX. Makes me want to drive up to Oklahoma to try it out though.

My point is this… I don’t need some gigantic lifted “off road” machine just to drive to the office, pick the kids up from school, and go to the grocery or home improvement store in.

Statistics apparently show that only around 1/3 of these vehicles will actually be used off road… so the rest of them will be cruising the streets wasting fuel and clogging up drive-thrus and parking lots. Just like most of the “Heavy Duty” pickups I see. They are being used as commuter vehicles by little men in business suits who apparently feel the need to compensate for something.

Unlike some people… I actually have a brain in my head and a bit of sensibility. I don’t need a huge truck, so I drive a smaller fuel efficient vehicle instead. Americans need to stop being so pig-headed and actually start looking at the bigger picture. We have become the symbol of gross extravagance and waste… yet we don’t understand why the rest of the world hates us.

RaineMan, to Hell with the rest of the world and their opinion of us. We drive what we want to drive because this is America, and we have freedom of choice. That was earned and paid for by the blood of our Fore Fathers. You don’t like it or think it’s wasteful, fine. That’s cool, but I for one couldn’t care less what you think about it or what others in other countries think. Not everyone has the same needs and desires as you when choosing their vehicle. Imagine a world of Priuses. How homogenous and boring.

As far as “compensating”…please. Same weak insult regarding those who own guns.

Everyone who buys this truck: ENJOY IT. And park real close to a Prius when you’re in the parking lot.

daveman- Personally I can’t see a new Lightning coming out. The “round” generation of F-series trucks actually could pull off the “sporty” look. The current generation is just too bulky looking and even the base versions are too rigged for towing and hauling stuff.

Raineman, I rarely see someone in a business suit driving a Heavy Duty – probably 90-95% of HD trucks are used for work purposes, and those guys you see in business suits probably have horses, an RV, or some other significant use for a truck like that.

A4- That almost pulls it off, but it still looks too bulky too me. Maybe it’s just me. The current F-series is even worse. Really, it seems they had the squared, chiseled 9th gen, the very round 10th gen and then took a step back to the square, chiseled design.

There are some energy grants and low interest loans, but NO BAILOUT money here!! Get your facts from facts and not from NMOFGM or 1115. But then again you did call them “ZR2 F150’s”…what the F????

Hmmm…let’s break this one down.

-US Citizens pay TAXES to the Government.
-The Government FUNDS the Department of Energy.
-DOE money = Government money.

Well, look at that…Ford did take taxpayer money.

And it’s just plain common sense that the 5 BILLION they received from the Government allows the money Ford was originally going to spend on “retooling” on other things…like keeping the lights on.

The DOE loans were the original bailout.
