First Drive: 2010 Ford Taurus SHO [Review]

06/23/2009, 12:22 PM

By Mark Elias

Lightning must strike every ten years or so in Dearborn since that was the last time we saw a Taurus SHO roll out of a Ford factory. The polarizing style of the jellybean-shaped Taurus was one that you either loved or hated, but by 1999, the car was merely a shadow of its former self.

With Yamaha-designed V6 engines underhood, the Taurus S-H-Os (Ess-aych-oh, not SHO as in “really big show”) were the sleepers of the highway, able to blow off many imports and domestics without even breaking sweat. Various mishaps and missteps resulted in the model being pulled from production in 1999, mostly due to lack of interest and neglect.

After yesterday’s review of the 2010 Ford Taurus sedan, we thought we’d take an in-depth look at its high-po big brother.

Ten years later
Well, ten years is a long time to wait for a “make good,” but Ford has finally come through with a revitalized SHO nameplate to adorn the new sixth-generation (counting the outgoing Five Hundred/Taurus model of 2009) Taurus that goes on sale later this summer. This time the SHO is a big car. Almost as big as a Crown Vic. (Taurus Police packages anyone?) But Ford executives claim that despite the fact this is a bigger, more comfortable Taurus, it is a car that will be more about its owner than anyone else. Call it a “Me” car. Choosing to bring it to market at the same time as the introduction of the anything-but-plain-Jane Taurus is a bold move from a company that has been making a few of those this past year – even if it no longer uses the marketing tag line.

Start with the already competent canvas of the base Taurus, itself a great car. Get rid of the 3.5-liter Duratec V6 and in its place insert a 3.5-liter Ecoboost twin-turbo mill putting out 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft. of torque, which is 102 more ponies and 101 more lb-ft. of torque over the engine it replaces.

And this engine is good.

Because of the direct injection nature of the mill and the twin turbos, turbo lag is nearly eliminated, and although normal road sound is not that intrusive, an audio-tuned cone pointing towards the cockpit feeds aural excitement with a nice induction-based growl. But we did find this thing they call Ecoboost is a torquey little monster, a pleasant surprise considering that this new S-H-O is no girly-man lightweight. At nearly 4,400 lbs, there is a lot of mass for the side-mounted twin turbo to push and pull around with its all-wheel-drive system. Power comes on at around 1,500 rpm and utilizing a relatively flat torque band, it stays in the hunt until around 5,500 rpm. Still, it manages a somewhat respectable 17 mpg city / 25 mpg highway.

Pushing your buttons
That all-wheel-drive system is centered by a system from Sweden’s Haldex. The result of this setup is a sure-footed experience when power is supplied that kicks you back into your seat. Mated to a six-speed 6F55 SportShift automatic transmission, it enables you to drive the Taurus all day long as an automatic-transmission vehicle or gives you the choice to throw the gear selector into M-mode for some push-button gear rowing and rev-matching by way of the steering wheel-mounted paddles that more resemble charcoal-colored Chiclets than they do paddle levers. No matter. They shift extremely fast and smoothly. We found that the manual mode was truly more manual than we’ve seen in other high-performance paddle-equipped cars. Forget to shift while laying that size 11 on the loud pedal, and you’ll soon have the engine bumping up against the rev-limiter like some backmarker Indy car.

A sport-tuned suspension keeps the 19-inch tires firmly planted, but if size does matter, look at the SHO Performance Package, which features a set of 20-inchers. They were not available during our test ride, but we can tell you they also include performance brake pads, sport-tuned electronic power steering, AdvanceTrac stability control with a true off button and a 3:16:1 final drive ratio.

The ride through the hills surrounding Asheville, North Carolina, surprised us with how steady the car rocked the road. At first glance we were thinking a car this big will wallow like the bloody QE II ocean liner. Instead, what we saw and felt was a contender that wasn’t soft and bouncy or harsh and denture rattling like other cars in the marketplace. Speaking of competitors, this S-H-O slots up against the Acura TL, Cadillac CTS, Chrysler 300C, Volvo S80 and the soon-to-be-gone Pontiac G8 GT.

All business inside
The interior is business-like with aluminum-accented “eyebrows” that are actually the dashboard facings. A tri-faced gauge binnacle houses the speedo, tach, fuel and temperature gauges and gives off a more retro-feel than anything else. A clean, sophisticated center stack houses the standard-for-SHO Ford Sync system while the optional navigation system or the head unit with LCD readout tells you when you have tuned Sirius Satellite Radio to Howard100. A grippy leather-wrapped steering wheel matches the similarly covered shift lever. For non-navigation-equipped cars, the Sync system can provide turn-by-turn directions downloaded to the car.

The leather seating with p-suedo suede inserts (made from the spun fiber of recycled soda bottles) offer grippiness for the gluteals during the times you want to exercise your biceps whipping wheel on various twisties to and from work. Front seats are ten-way power adjustable and when combined with the adjustable pedals allow for an infinite amount of driver comfort. The rear seat, which may just go unoccupied most of the time since this car, according to Ford, is all about me, can still accommodate three full-size passengers in the back. Not that you would ever carry them.

So, enough about me. What do you think about me?

Leftlane’s bottom line
With enough technology to make Bill Gates’ eyes roll up into his head, the SHO will satisfy the geek in all of us. With all-wheel-drive standard, and weighing in at about 4,400 pounds, the SHO definitely won’t be chirping the wheels like a little sports car. But you will be rewarded with a great driving and riding experience that makes the daily commute to and from the office more than interesting.

2010 Ford Taurus SHO base price, $37,995.

Why make a “sports sedan” in automatic only? I don’t care how many gears it has or how neat the push-buttons are… you won’t get any of those neck-snapping downshifts or be able to chirp second with an automatic.

Wish they had done the SHO in a mid-sized package again, like into the Fusion. I see Taurus and MKS on the road and they’re just so big looking. For just that reason I wouldn’t buy one.

For the record, I owned an Electric Red 1991 SHO. In my opinion, this was the best sedan ever produced by an American car company. It was the best car I’ve ever owned and I still speak fondly of that car to this day. Now is Ford would have made the SHO wagon….

So Mark, from your interior description I guess it is technically accurate to say that driving this SHO is as exhilarating and sitting on a soda bottle, is that correct?

I really wish they would offer an SHO-style sport suspension on the SEL or Limited. I really dont need the 365hp or the AWD, but I have very nice twisties I drive every day to and from town and enjoying them is what I want. Sport suspension and 263hp will do. Blowing the doors off the next guy and paying at the pump for the priviledge is not high on my priority list.

I too am a old “Manual “guy. I would never consider a “slush” box in a performance car. Then I had the opportunity to drive a new 911 with the PDK gearbox. Just plain amazing. Now, I know the SHO does not have the same level of performance as the PDK….But I do know it is possible to build a pure performance auto transmission

From Car & Driver online: “Sure, this twin-turbo V-6 is impressively responsive and whips up a meaty shove. But there’s simply nothing “eco” about endowing a two-ton Taurus with V-8 Mustang performance. We averaged 16 mpg.”

This car is a conflict and I agree with ricky_b. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great American sedan but it is not an SHO when compared to the original.

And Ford, please do not put this engine into the Mustang. SHO and Ecoboost on the same Taurus badge is one thing but Mustang and Ecoboost together would really make the purists sick to their stomachs.

that said, manuals are getting rarer and rarer these days…folks who like them are turning into dinosaurs and the up and coming xbox/playstation crowd may be happy with “flappy paddle gearboxes” (in clarksonese)…that shift faster than a human can, while providing a fully automatic mode for when you’re just commuting in traffic…

You can get a 365HP EcoBoost engine with all wheel drive vs. the measly 310HP V-8 rear wheel drive car. The Mustang has made believers but they need to up the power in their bread and butter. Its time out for their complacency.

I am actually for the ECOBOOST TT V6 in the Mustang. The main reason is performance but also marketing. Performance for the lighter V6. Marketing because increasingly V8’s a frowned upon by the younger crowd, Those future buyers FORD needs to buy LINCOLNs in the future. That isn’t a joke.

I really don’t see why you couldn’t have both in the Mustang line. Just bring back the LX badge and reserve V8s only for The “5.0″ V8 Mustang GT. Recall that that the LX was, back in the 1980s, just the GT without the bodywork and cloth seats. It was the car you bought to turn into a racer. It cost a bit less but was actually quicker and faster. But the GT’s looks are what sold it… and still do really.

Hold output to 355hp for the LX and an even 400hp or more for the GT and higher for the “Super ‘Stangs”. Accouterments specific only to the GT, maybe a deeper performance load out, and body work, leaving the LX to be the “Tuner car” in the line up?

We can have both.

Blakkarr, you’re probably right. I’m just an old curmudgeon. I had a brand new ‘91 LX at one point and I cried when I had to give it up to buy our first house. But If it means more sales and brings in a wider audience then I suppose that’s what it is really all about.

You do have to wonder however if the Ecoboost is a more expensive motor to build than even the upcoming Coyote V8. If so, then what’s the point in having 40 less ponies and no V8 ‘feel’?

This is impressive for a Ford but thats where it ends. This is what Ford should have had out 4-5 years ago skipping the entire 500/Taurus Montego incident. They are still behind but at least this car has a decent interior. I think they made a mistake bc this interior looks better than the cousin MKS from Lincoln. Ford NEEDS to put the Ecoboost in the Mustang. Screw the “purists” what the hell do they know ? Its a lighter more fuel efficient engine so why not put it in your sport car?? Purist are old assholes who cant accept change. There were racial “purists” in Germany and look how that turned out

I believe Ford has done a fabulous job on the SHO: 0-60 in 5.2 sec, over 100mph 1/4 mile at 13.7 sec and still get 25mpg and rides like a Lexus. I’m loving my Ford stock (F).

Anyone considering a G8 think first: Its a low volume “one-off” IMPORT thats DOA. Parts are going to be rare and very expensive (just check the insurance premium) and residual value in none, nada, zilch!

I’ll give Ford credit for utilizing F/I instead of throwing a massive, inefficient engine in there. Also impressed at the use of a Haldex-based AWD system (the same used in some Audi Quattro drivetrains). I understand the lack of a manual transmission, most mid-size sedans (even those with 300+ hp) still appeal to people who don’t know the joy rowing through gears. However, I’m really disappointed at the price. This would be a real steal if they could just make it closer to $30k. For the price, you could get a lot of other cars in the same market segment.

Why is anyone comparing this to S4?? Wrong price class, wrong size class, etc. The price of the SHO will undercut an S4 by several thousand dollars.

Also, the SHO has always been a “Q” car…undercover, wolf in sheeps clothing type thing. It shouldn’t have stuff to make it stand out too much from the rest of the lineup.

I have also driven and 2010 SHO and agree that I think many of you are selling the ride and handling of the car very short. It doesn’t drive like such a big car. Thats a good thing. Sure I wish they’d throw this motor in the Fusion, but oh well…But for someone looking for a good, comfortable, solid, safe, quick and powerful full size sedan, it really doesn’t get better than this until you step into an M5 or something of that kin. So, 40k seems a steal compared too.

And for those that think that there are other cars in that price range? What? A loaded Avalon (luxo barge)? G8 is dead. Dont’ say BMW 3 series, too small, and once you option them out, they are way over $40k. So I see this as a performance/luxury value especially with all the tech you get in the car. Acura TL?? Not really, not enough power and looks like a transformer.

Everyone likes to point out the faults…I’m seeing all the good.

Wait, did the Audi have SYNC? No
Did it have it a Direct Injection engine? No
Did it have Adaptive cruise control? No
Did it have BLIS? No
Did it have CrossTraffic Alert? No
Did it have ActiveMotion seats? No
Did it have Climate controlled seats? No
Did it have the best Navigation system on the market? No

There is also the need to really teach the abilities of this MUSTANG’s SLA. It really is impressive just how capable it is. Makes for a great drift car, but does need a bit more finesse for street racing. Frankly, though I want IRS in the next MUSTANG. It’s long overdue.

The engines? Who said the Coyote had to cost more. Just ask more for it. If you offer a hot TT V6 and make a hotter V8 with more and better equipment, then you can ask notably more for it. Besides I’m willing to bet that, by economy of scale, those TT V6s actually cost the same or less than the Coyote 5.0.

As for the feel. You may only notice when you press pedal. The old 305 pulled like a freight train even with “only” 215hp stock. Frankly a properly tuned V6 will feel like a V8 from idle to red line. FORD doesn’t really do anything they do halfway (though I wish they would option to do more). You really will not notice much of a difference between the V6 and the V8… The Turbos may skew that as would a Supercharger on a V8.

The rally spec sport 100 has up to 550 hp (road legal version) and real 4wd,
The sport 100 dominated the all the rally championships before the impreza was
even concieved(and was aborted in the third trimester)
so the SHO could definitely not beat it in anything except trunk space

Oh Your wrong the Hennessey SHO does exist go to Hennessey Website . It not a figment of your imagination. Sure its not a Rally Car I’ll leave that to the The Focus RS World Rally Car, which powered Ford to the manufacturers’ world title in both 2006 and 2007, sports a striking modern livery that took centre stage today at Europe’s largest annual motorsport exhibition. It was also announced that the squad will be named the BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team for 2008. So there for the Last 3 Years we don’t even know who AUDI IS. But they should know Ford Motor Company’s FORD FOCUS RS WRC Real well getting their Arse’s handed to them 3 times in the last count em 3 years!

Bankruptcy, no it will not, the audi has 0-60 times of about 4.2 s, in the 80’s! With todays tech, they could make a much faster car. Also, audi stopped rallying when a FORD ran off the rally road, killing 9 people, causing the regulations to change, and making the audi pointless. Audi then Decided to quit rallying and start competing in the LMS and ALMS, which they have dominated for the last three Generations of automobiles.
Ford no longer participates.

LLN: Anyone who doesn’t know how to pronounce SHO should ignore this article and probably should not drive.

” …able to blow off many imports and domestics without even breaking sweat. ” I’m from the less-is-more school of writing. Rather than “imports and domestics,” try “competitors.”

I also like the manual mode.

I don’t know where this list of competitors came from. G8, Yes. “TL,” yes. But not the 300C or the CTS.

ricky_b: In my opinion, the best sedan ever produced by an American car company is the new CTS.

Bankruptcy2009: “Reed fast I think you’ll find this thing will run Run Circles around your Audi R8.” You should proof that.

reedfast: calling something FWD an Impala … somebody needs to go to jail for that.

Johnnyc: “And Ford, please do not put this engine into the Mustang.” Hear, hear!

tripleonefive: “This is what Ford should have had out 4-5 years ago.” You’re right.

l.sanchez: “It doesn’t drive like such a big car.” you’re right.

PearlJamFan: I play “Corduroy” on a Les Paul, and “rearviewmirror” on an Epiphone. “For “Leash,” I use a different Epiphone.

Bankruptcy, i’ll admit that ford was a very respectable company until they got into nascar and decided to
appeal to hillbilies and rednecks more than the people who had trusted, cared for, and helped the company
through the depression, and all the tough times since. But if you look, ford has not competed in a form of motor racing that actually has anything to do with their real cars since 1970. And such, has lost all my respect. The drag cars ford sponsors are handbuilt, so are the dirt trucks, they just have a ford badge and nothing else to do with ford, and NASCAR, really? That bunch of hillbilly baloney and gay prick soap opera is nothing short of ridiculous. It has nothing to do with individual companies *toyota can sometimes win* and exists so drunk fat a$$es have somthing to watch between football comercials. No actual good can come out of nascar, it is just advertising, le mans, on the otherhand helped to develop audi/vw’s tdi technology, which can achieve <40 mpg. American car companies enter nascar for advertising when they want to attract rednecks into buying their midsize saloons. End of Story

I have been reading reviews about the new SHO, unfortunately there is no feel to the steering so you can tell where the care is, just like all American cars. All the Eurpoean cars have better steering and you can control the care better. So much for competing with the world. Why don’t you just roll over and play dead Ford, you treat the American car buyer with contempt. Maybe someday your cars will compete with Europe, I guess whenever you decide. This SHO costs as much as an Audi S6, are you KIDDING!!! This car is underdone and over priced.
