Just last week Ford announced that it would be taking on Gymkhana sensation driver Ken Block for rally car racing, and now Ford has turned to hip-hop sensation Nelly. Nelly appeared at the Detroit Auto Show today and spoke about the 2011 Mustang 5.0 GT that will be part of his upcoming album’s artwork.

This isn’t the first time Ford has reached out to Nelly for a celebrity push for one of its products – Nelly had a custom Ford Flex built by Funkmaster Flex as well. Ford has been teaming up with Funkmaster Flex since 2005 to produce custom show cars by modifying its production vehicles.

Speaking of the Flex, Nelly said, “When I saw it, I said ‘Yo, that’s hot! How can I get one of those?’”

During Nelly’s appearance today he spoke about the Mustang GT that was modified by DUB magazine that will not only be featured in his upcoming album’s artwork, but will also be going in his garage for his own enjoyment.

“I’m itching to get behind the wheel of my Mustang and really take it out on the streets,” Nelly said. “This vehicle being a part of my album artwork is just a reflection of the direction and feel that the album has. To be able to partner with Ford again on another vehicle that is going to change the automotive game is exciting.”

Ford can only hope that its partnership with music star Nelly does not suffer the same fate as Chevy’s partnership with fellow music star T.I., whose endorsement ended early due to a felony conviction.
