Ford confirmed at an analyst meeting today it will offer a Lincoln version of the forthcoming Ford-brand crossover based on the Fairlane concept. The vehicle is designed to replace Ford’s minivan offerings.
Executives didn’t provide a timeframe for the Lincoln vehicle, but said it would not be a simple re-badge of the Fairlane, although it will share some “key points” with the Ford version, reports Automotive News.
Ford “didn’t just drop a new grille and badge on this vehicle,” Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s global product chief said. “I’ll be frank: We toyed with the idea. But the team agreed the easy way wasn’t the right way.”

but jordan, the navigator wasn’t a response for the then successful escalade (which everyone thought it would fail as well) just like mustang/camaro thing? correct me if i’m wrong i really don’t know that!

Lincoln needs new CARS not another crossover. The town car can barely compete with the 300C Avalon and Lucerne. The redesigned 300C and the Zeta Invicta and maybe even DTS will crush it by the end of the decade. Lincoln doesn’t even have a midsized RWD competitor.
I think the people running Lincoln must take the special, short navigator to work.

Its NOT a Lincoln van!! Geez. Fairlane doesnt have sliding doors. Its an alternative to the 5-passengers Ford Edge for more seating. I think they are dropping the Freestyle since they dont need two 7-pass crossovers.

Lincoln is supposed to have three cars by 2010: MKZ (updated in late-2008), MKS (debuting in mid-2008) and MKR (debuting mid-2009). I think that’s a decent car line-up if their design cues and features are similar to what has been shown on the car show circuit.
The MKX will also be there (updated in 2009) (and probably the Navigator, although, hopefully with a nicer nose and a different engine). Then you will have this crossover, probably similar in size to an Explorer and half way between the egg shape of the CX-9 and the box of the Fairlane concept, maybe similar to the Mercedes GL?
Yes, I think this could be a good crossover if pulled off well and differentiated significantly from the Ford.

Thank you S-60, this is not a van, and the Fairlane isn’t even complete. For all we know this vehicle could turn out to be something totally differant from what we have seen in the Fairlane.

Christ, why is Ford making so many stupid decisions with Lincoln’s strategy? It’s like they WANT that division to fail. Damn, it’s their most troubled brand so far and yet nothing they’ve announced so far will do *anything* to help. Sigh…

It’s more of an Aviator replacement than anything. Them boys at Lincoln better keep it sharp if they intend to gain market share. Where is the flagship competitor for the XLR Caddy? Where’s the competent 3 series fighter? I don’t see them… Lincoln got lazy building blingy SUV’s, and nursing along elderly platforms for geriatric buyers. Time to step up, or step out.

Syrax — the Navigator was NOT a reaction to Cadillac’s Escalade, it was introduced in 1998 around the same time as GMC’s Yukon Denali, and the Cadillac version of the Denali followed in 2000.

Yeah, Mercury should be looking nervous… It’s life could end in the next 3-5 years. It won’t be cut tomorrow, but that division is asleep at the wheel. Adding chrome to Ford’s scraps is no way to run a division.

Kendall Richardson….. Lincoln Navigator came out in 1998 and Cadillac came out with the ‘Slade in 1999 to compete with the Lincoln SUV and the ‘Slade got a redesign in 2002.

This is a Range Rover rip off, right? I can understand why Ford wants to step into the relatively lucrative Range Rover-ish segment, but with a Lincoln??? What is Ford trying to do? It’s a bit like Michael Jackson attempting a come-back…
And stop beating on Chris Bangle.
Even though I didn’t allways agree with him on his decisions, he’s taken automotive design up a step or two, placing emphasis on the designer, leaving room for e.g Adrian Van Hooydonk or Anders Warming of BMW.

All those complaining about the demise of Mercury should consider what Ford my have up their sleeves. Namely, importing Ford of Europe cars and rebadging (Opel -> Saturn). If that was the case, then there would be no room for a large family hauler if Merc bcomes the Euro niche player. It actually makes some sense to have Ford be the All-American basic, Lincoln be the All-American luxury, and Mercury be the Euro-design division. What other direction can you take Mercury, especially not in Lincoln’s direction, since most Mercury dealers also sell Lincolns.
Those of you who remember the Merkur debacle do not need to respond to this post. You forget that nobody could pronounce the name of the freakin’ company, and the XR4ti surely gets the award for goofiest car with the goofiest name. Mercury could make this work, so bring on the Mondeo already!

HEY DIP****S, WAKE UP, FOR THE LAST TIME IT IS NOT A VAN, NEVER WAS A VAN NEVER WILL BE A VAN. FORD IS KILLING THE VAN. THEIR IS NOLONGER A MARKET FOR THEM, UNLESS YOUR DODGE.
Now for those who can differentiate a van from a crossover. This is going to be the 3rd seater from the MKX. For those who try to make their 2 seaters into 3 without changing the vehicle, it doesn’t work. Has anyone looked at the 3rd row in the small crossover/suvs. Their is absolutly no room.
Their are way to many retarded kids on this websit. I feel like I’m getting on my sons case all the time.

Maybe Lincoln can redesign this one enough that it has some of the Aviator concept cues that they foolishly omitted when they copied the Ford Edge bodyshell for the production MKX. The concept Zephyr and Aviator were styled far better than the production garbage they foisted on us.. hopefully the production MKS, MKR and this thing have a more uniquely Lincoln look.
