Ford is considering closing as many as four plants in the U.S. and Canada, the president of the Canadian Auto Workers said. “Ford needs to close plants because of their falling sales and market share,” said Erich Merkle, auto analyst at IRN Inc. in Grand Rapids, Michigan. “They just don’t have enough vehicles to spread around their plants.” Merkle said the plants most vulnerable to closing are at Wixom, Michigan, St. Louis, St. Paul, Minnesota and Atlanta, employing a total of about 7,680 workers. The plants, he said, have not received investment or commitments for new models. Ford has already stated there would be major cutbacks. “Clearly there are more things to come,” Chief Financial Officer Don Leclair said in an interview last month. “We know we have excess capacity. We have plans. We’re checking them over.”
