Let this be a wake-up call to the UAW, you are all on your way to getting shitcanned if you can't get reasonable and realise that what you do just isn't worth premium money and benefits, especially when you're not doing it any better than Koreans who will work for pennies.
.
Where I live we get the Mitsubishi Galant sitting alongside Japan-built Lancers and Pajeros (Shoguns) at the dealerships. There is a window sticker on the Galant that says UAW-built; its been derided as one of the most counter-productive marketing strategies: nobody wants a US-built car here.

Ford is just going downhill. Slowly but steadily. I honestly wonder if Ford will still be around 15 years from now. Maybe in Europe, but here I doubt it. All this struggle to reduce costs will only hurt its already poor reputation for quality. And I wouldn't want to buy a car built by a company who's employees just got a 12% pay cut.

Dude, a Haiku???

Japan can't be blamed for what Ford and the Detroit automakers did to themselves. They allowed Big Steel and Big Oil to drive their company interests and influence their labor force, instead of acting on their own to shore up their product line. They let unions talk them into paying workers $46.00 an hour to tighten a bolt or two and keep an eye on the robot. They let a ton of people retire at 55 with full pensions and healthcare, and now those fat, rich bastards are taking Lipitor and living to 90, drawing a pension for 40 more years than they actually worked. And they didn't keep an eye on design. If I hear another person complain about bland Japanese cars -- ahem, the US INVENTED BLAND. K-car? Taurus? 300 anonymous 2-door pickups, distinguishable only by the front grille? Go find me a Lincoln, Buick and Cadillac from the '90s and tell me we were pushing the envelope in visual design. Look at the new Focus -- that's got to be one of the ugliest production cars ever made. I'd drive a Hyundai Tiburon first, and let me tell you, that's saying something!

Anyway, Ford needs to spin off Volvo, fire the unions and outsource production to someplace even cheaper than Mexico. Brazil maybe?

You really have to sit back, shake your head, and wonder how the f*ck it came to all this. Since the first Honda Civic rolled off the boat 35 years ago the writing has been on the wall. And none of the big 3 (or 4 if you include AMC) could see it coming? If you felt a Japanese sword sticking you in the back every day for over 3 decades wouldn't you do something about it before it's too late? Seriously, it may be too late. All those of us loyal to Detroit ever wanted were vehicles as well built as the Japanese but not as bland as the Japanese. We usually got the latter half of that equation, but that's hardly a consolation when your purchase f*cking falls apart well before your neighbor's Asian counterpart. Yes, it's better now than in the past, but the target keeps moving.

xyunya you are forgetting about the verve, kuga, c-max, Euro-spec focus ready for late 2009. Do you really think they need nissan??? The Verve will dominant that segment. Kuga and C-Max are on the C-1 platform and will sell very well in N.A. as long as the design is not tampered with to much. The 2009 Escape 4 cyl.will have 3 more horsepower than the CRV and will register the same fuel economy.
Ford will survive.

I can see Chrysler catching wind from away from Ford. Basically Kerkorian was dreaming to merge Ford and Nissan. Now, Nissan is building cars for Chrysler and Chrysler building trucks for Nissan. If Nissan and Chrysler to sell the same car in US market (think Matrix and Vibe) it would be very complicated to add Ford to the mix. Ford is odd man out. Does Nissan needs a threesome for one market? Also, Chrysler selling capacity to Alfa (or at least trying). Ford is definitely in a worse shape.

Ford's bread and butter has been the F-150 and Explorer. . . They are definately F'ed. I really don't think "ecoboost" is gonna bail them out of this one. If gas stays high, both Ford and Chrysler are toast.

Well, certainly Honda will not make similar announcements: they are struggling to get more capacity. I think the same story holds for Nissan. Toyota is at stalemate of their numbers, but they already obtained crown. Ford has nothing to sell or to build: they have 2 models in their line-up with 4 cylinder engines: 12 years old Focus and Fusion with anemic engine from Focus. Ford owns 33% of Mazda, and counts on its lineup as its own, but at $4/gallon Ford is screwed for a few years forward.
