Don’t get too excited folks. I suspect this release was lifted verbatim from the British press release – and an imperial gallon as used in the UK has greater volume than a US gallon.

1 gall US = 0.8327 imperial gallon

1 imperial gallon = 1.2009 US gallon

This will affect the above mileage per gallon figures.

Not sure where all the excitement is coming from. The European cycle is very different from the US cycle. Brought here with this powertrain and measured using the US cycle, this is roughly the same as the Prius and Civic Hybrid. Roughly 50mpg. The plus is there are no batteries to recharge (added maintenance cost). The downside is diesel is quite a bit more than gas right now, so at least initially (or every time you go to the pump) you may not “feel” the difference, but in the short and long-term, your wallet will.

For the record, the Honda Accord (TSX) diesel has gotten 60mpg based on the European cycle (some testing I think with the NY Times or something put it at 52mpg under the US real world cycle). This is very common with many diesels from many different manufacturers in Europe.

Alright, how many of us would actually consider a 1.6 liter four cylinder diesel, that most likely gets 0-60 in *wait for it* and smaller than pretty much anything offered currently in the US?

I could consider a hatchback, but only as a second car. And I wouldn’t consider a little anemic diesel with those sorts of modifications either. I would be much happier importing a VW Polo, although I like the looks of this much more than the VW.

xyunya- You mean #2 for a domestic… That translates to second or third in most sales in the U.S. Just as a reminder, we have the biggest auto market in the world.

sterfry71- Think about the rest of their line up. If this and smaller offerings were only choices for me, I would stick with my now ancient vehicle and be happy with 25 miles per gallon, and snatch up a small peppy truck. That way, I may have an automatic classic on my hands!

Somebody needs to beat some sense into Ford’s management. Every time they come up with a nice innovative product, it is only sold in Europe and “not for the U.S.”. You have to be brain dead to not see the opportunity for a well designed European product to sell well in the U.S. VW, Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, etc. have no problem selling their European designed vehicles in the U.S. For some reason, Ford management thinks American car buyers have COMPLETELY different tastes than Europeans, and that’s simply wrong.

They are bringing to the US. It debuts in 2010 and just like the focus is currently the #1 domestic, this will obviously follow in its footsteps. Ford is doing great things, you cant deny that. The flex gets 24 mpg… So what are you talking about bad gas milage? It has a 3.5 V6,263 hp what did you expect it to get? Follow gm? Last i heard Ford is leading GM in sales in every category for domestic brands.. Small size sedan: Focus is #1
Mid Size Sedan:Fustion is #1
Cross Overs: Edge is #1 and crushing
Truck: Do i even have to say it.F150 has wont that category 32 years.

0-60mph in 20 seconds, probably. It is pathetic when a Yaris has nearly twice the power. And those low resisting tires? They are garbage in terms of handling and braking. Death is not worth the savings.

Funny how Ford (along with other auto manufacturers) said the CAFE standard of 35.7 mpg in 2015 isn’t feasible and then they introduce a 2009/2010 model car that gets 67 mpg.

The Stig- It’s unfortunate that you said was sarcasm, but I’m sure that’s what’s going through Mark Fields head today…
And Volkswagen just barely passes diesel emissions in the US. Every year they’ve had to stay tight to the curve ball.

Act- And the Americans actually delivered something peopled liked…

Note that liked is past tense. Now they have very little of that.

LJ- The engine your talking about is being built in the US and exported to Europe. So far GM has no plans to use it stateside.

LLN- How about you do clarify on managing posts, and how about you do so often but very lightly, instead of coming around when someone complains, and then dissapearing?
Also, a recommendation; put a forums button on the home page.

VW had to delay their TDI engines because they could not meet standards in all 50 states, and by the way none of the german diesels available now or in near future can achieve this kind of mileage. The technology necessary to keep NOx levels low enough to pass emissions would drive the cost of the vehicle too high to make it appealing to the general public

That’s not entirely true. How else does VW get their Jetta TDI over here? Same goes for MB and BMW – both with diesels either now or later this calendar year.

Ford’s problem is that Mark “Big Hair” Fields believes an 89hp car won’t sell because the HP is less marketable and the cost of diesel is sky high.

The normal engine, according to our news report when the news Fiesta would arrive in USA, supposed will get 40 mpg.
Same news station said in June that GM is going to have a 120-140HP gas engined(turboed?) 1.4L(like a 1.8 normal aspiration) engine..but get up to 45 MPG?

Might have to go with the Chevy next year, if it lives up to the hype.
Would rather have a 5 or 3 door Fiesta, but when gas is 4-5 dollars a gallon…can’t be too choosy while driving 120 miles per day.

89hp diesel withOUT having to follow the stupid hybrid craze, and return 67mpg. Why WOULDN’T Ford bring this here? This car would blow away the Prius and Civic Hybrid, as long as Ford doesn’t sell it here in that purple shown in the photo above.
