Ford to drop SFE badge from F-150 for 2010

06/16/2009, 9:26 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Ford will apparently drop its SFE – “Superior Fuel Economy” – badge from 4.6-liter, 4×2-versions of its popular F-150 XL at XLT pickups for 2010. The Dearborn, Michigan, automaker had installed the badging to market the 21-mpg highway rating and to keep pace with rival General Motors’ XFE (”Xtra Fuel Efficient“) label.

PickupTrucks.com asked Ford spokesperson Anne Marie Gattari about the decision to remove the badge.

“Since all [of] our 4.6-liter 3-valve 4×2s will achieve 15/21 fuel economy label, there’s no need for [the] SFE [model],” she said.

Unlike the GM products, the F-150 did not require any aerodynamics modifications to achieve the 21 mpg.

Polite way of saying, “We realize this was just a marketing gimmick that had no real significance and nobody really paid any attention too. In other words, customers were not flocking into showrooms asking for the SFE model…”

Since most of clientele who bought truck with V8 had no idea what the SFE meant, it is pandering to schmacks who love extra letters on their trucks.

It may also be to keep SFE owners from looking stupid when the EcoBoost F150 comes out.

SO you are telling me 21 mpg on the highway is neither “super” or “fuel effecient” WHAT?!?!?!

Ok, ok – I’ll lay off the sarcasim, but I really never realized how bad the gas mileage was on full size trucks UNTIL they released this edition and started bragging about 21 mpg on the HIGHWAY for a 4X2.

They range about 400-500 miles due to the large gas tanks on these beast. But I wont buy a truck for fuel efficiency, but merely for their functionality. I don’t want a truck that drives or functions like a car. What fun would that be?

Payton – I think you’re right on the money with that. It was a gimmick to begin with, but with the upcoming ecoboost it would defeat the xfe marketing ploy.

we have a 98′ Safari with the 4.3 and it gets roughly 10-11mpg combined, can i get a sticker that says ‘SKR’?
good thing we only use it for its 8 person seating, sits in our side garage for 11 months of the year.
