Ford will offer “new product content” each year with the Mustang, company executives said earlier this week during the 2007 model year rollout. Executive Derrick Kuzak told Edmunds Carroll Shelby will work every year on the Mustang. When asked if a 600+ hp model will be offered, he said, “never say never to anything.” In an interview with Mr. Shelby himself, Edmunds managed to get further details. Shelby said GM “better not dream” of having more horsepower than the Mustang with the new Camaro. Recent rumors have suggested GM could drop the Corvette Z06 engine into the Camaro. Shelby said it would be “very easy” to push the ‘Stang to over 600 horsepower and still offer the company’s 50,000-mile warranty. He also confirmed an all-new Mustang is due in 2009.

Its just like wasting your money tuning up some rice. I don’t care how much power you put in it, its still a crappy Mustang. A car is alot more than the HP figure and the 0-60 time.

The GT500 costs ~$86 per Horsepower. using that formula a 600hp Mustang would costs ~$52,000…ill take mine in white with blue stripes and a 6spd.

There’s nothing wrong with the chassis. I just wish they hadn’t tossed the IRS and dumbed it down with an ox-cart’s solid rear axle. But I reckon more power is always nice, even if it’s given to someone like Mr. Ed.

I am just disapointed the 07 shelby doesn’t have 600 hp, with all the 03-04 cobras running around the street with mild bolt on that have 600 HP and all the parts needed to do it sitting on the shelf at ford racing.

I’d put the F-series trucks and (up until recently)the Explorer on that list as well. And Volvo was a good purchase for them that has paid off. When they put effort into something and they really TRY, Ford can put out a damn fine product.

after the election in November, Ford has the better idea
of coming out with a 600 HP car…..Wow….Ford really get’s it.
Now imagine @ $4 a gallon and 10 mpg….$4 to go ten miles to buy a hamburger and fries at Mcdonalds.
How about a 5 liter diesel turbo that gets $25mpg?
Audi won at LeMans with a turbo diesel.

i have been a big fan of the VWAG diesel engines ever since 1999 when my dad brought home a Jetta TDI. its a great car and the engine is lots of fun. the 1st car company that brings out a diesel powered sports car is going to have a problem making enough of them. If i was a chairmen at VW i would put there 2.0L TDI into a Golf (sorry, Rabbit) and give it the new GTI’s wheels, suspentions, brakes, seats, and exterior treatment. basicly a diesel powered GTI. price it just under 20k and let the Car of the Year awards come rolling in

I’ll believe it when I see it. Shelby has been known to talk too much hypothetical crap. I’ll believe it when I see it. Plus I’m sure if they do get that much HP it will be with forced induction. If that’s the case then how hard do you think it would be to get an already much bigger and more powerfull engine that puts out 400hp or 500hp engine from GM to match or top that 600hp figure and still put money in the bank, either via GM or aftermarket.

What’s with all this garbage talk on here? Can’t anyone appreciate a car that has the most horsepower per doller? And to shine a light on #18’s comments, Ford is working on a displacement on demand type system for the Mustang in the future. Also, it seems that some of you think the Mustang is supposed to be a luxary car. Well, it’s not. I’d agree that the interiors are not the nicest I’ve seen, but they are definitely not the worst. I came to the acceptance long ago that the Mustang is not and never was a luxary car, but that the interior is good for the type of car that it is. Also, these Shelby’s are more than horsepower thrown into an ordinary Mustang. They do have suspension upgrades, and for those of you who may doubt Shelby’s abilities, the original GT350’s spanked IRS Corvettes road racing in the sixties, so Carrol Shelby is quite capable.

I would buy an irs turbodiesel i-6/v8/i4 mustang with 250+hp and 300+ lbft with 30+ mpg. But I think I’m in the minority. I think there is room within ford for another sporty car, but not a fwd one. I’d like to see a ford competitor to the sky/solstice, but I guess that’d be competition for the somewhat-in-house mx5…. (ford owns 33% of mazda, right?)
I’d like to see a true corvette-style car with an legit attempt at a sports-car setup, not a incremental improvements in solid-axles to the point of hittite-inspiring regard for automotive tech advancement.
Why should the hierarchy at ford be locked into successful past models and models that work for MOST of the other manufacturers (read: midsize sedans, fusion). Wouldn’t we all love to see ford trying something like a ‘vette/firepower competitor or a minivan with a raison d’etre like an odyseey/quest? The next ford minivan is going to be as plain-jane as the windstar was years ago… count on it.

#27, hate to burst your bubble, but I’ve seen dyno sheets of LS7’s with cam, headers, and tuning. They can run 700 hp, easy. And that’s without even touching the heads. Being that it’s MUCH lighter than the Mustang’s engine, I wouldn’t count it out of the fight.
Kudos to Ford for keeping the Mustang fresh and competitive. Hope they can keep the cost down. I’d like it if they not only fought a horsepower war, but a price war, too!
For those who say “needs more luxury,” or “I don’t care because it’s in a Mustang,” just go away. You’re not in the target audience for this car and you never will be. There are plenty of cars out there for someone who insists on “sophisticated.” Some of us want a car that costs 1/3 as much as the “sophisticated” one and blows its doors off. (while looking great doing it, I might add)
It’s a muscle car thing, and I’m a muscle car guy. So I “get it.” To those who don’t “get it,” and never will, just go away. We don’t care what you think.

Wait, did the SS Camaros one up the svt cobras in 2003? Ummm… NO! When has any stock Camaro had over 390 and now 500 horsepower? I guess Chevy screwed up if they had to discontinue the Camaro and Firebird (for not selling enough) even though they supposedly “one up” Ford. I guess you could compare the Mustang to the Corvette, but then you might as well compare the Ford GT to the Corvette, but wait, that would be comparing the Corvette to a Ford that could spank it in any catagory, let alone one upping it. It’s funny to see all these CHevy guys compare the Corvette to the Mustang because those two cars are not in the same class. Anyway, the 2003-04 Cobras and the new 2007 GT500s could give Corvettes a run for their money, even some of the mighty ZO6’s. Show some respect to the ONLY pony car (not two seat sports car) to remain in production since it was first made. As for this GM one upping Ford argument, maybe you could try to argue that if their precious pony car hadn’t died.

#32, Ford doesn’t have technology to make a good engine? Are SOHC and DOHC V8’s low technology bad engines? How high tech are GM’s pushrod engines that they’ve had since the sixties? You want to talk about high tech? Come back to me when GM comes out with a good high revving DOHC V8 that doesn’t have an oil eating reputation like their northstar motor does.

Ford sux!!The GTO was a limited production car only slated for three years and it kicked Mustangs asses. The Mustang cant hold a candle to the GTO never have and never will. Who gives a crap about the 03 04 SVT cobras they weigh more than the F-bodys and not that much faster. Someone said that the mustang did not die what happend to the Mustang II, the Trans Am was still going. As far as the GT500 good luck buying one cheaper than a c6 zo6 vett. DOHC/SOHC engine tech just as old as pushrod motors more expensive and larger, heaver, complex in weight, not much benifit over a more simple pushrod.

The Carvette will still be able to out gun the Mustang/Shelby because its much lighter and an over all better sports car (but it cost more too). The GTO cost $10,000 less than the Shelby and only has 100 less hp, IMO that not bad especially since the GTO doesn’t look ugly as hell like the Mustang/Shelby. The look of the Mustang is really the only thing that would stop me from purchasing it.

Hey #35, the GTO was limited production because it doesn’t appeal to a very wide spectrum of people. The Mustang can’t hold a candle to the GTO? Where on earth do you get your statistics? Even with Motor Trend drivers the 03-04 SVT Cobras are faster than the 2005 GTO’s (yes, the 400hp GTO’s). With good drivers and good track conditions the 03-04 Cobras can run at least mid twelves in the quarter mile. Sure, the Mustang GT’s may be slower than the GTO’s, but GTO’s were priced close to $35k, the same as the SVT CObras that could spank them. Read up on the competitors before you start talking crap next time. Oh, and the Mustang didn’t die, the Mustang II is the Mustang that was needed at the time (and they were very successful in sales over those oil crisis years). The Trans-ams may have been going, but in my opinion, all cars sucked starting in 1973. THe big block motors started posting small block perfomance numbers. Everything was choked up back then, and in my opinion, not very visually appealing (yes, I am talking about the Mustangs over those years too). Anyway, read up next time before you start reching for nothing as an argument.

At the end of the day no car manufacturer is as hot as Ford, in my books, for their history. ‘Stangs (don’t sue me), Ford GT, RS200s, RS2000 Mexicos, RS500s, the Focus RS, Cosworths, even good ole Tin Lizzie… They hold so much in people’s hearts… Not just in racing Movies like Bullit, Gone in 60 Seconds etc have immortalised Fords. GM have The Hoff’s thumbs up though… w00t… And GMC Custom Van for the A-Team…
