While Ford’s U.S.-spec Focus continues to do surprisingly well here, we can’t help but wonder what sales would be like if we had the Euro-spec Focus on our shores. We’ll only have to wonder for a few more years — as the next Focus will be a global vehicle — but that doesn’t mean we can’t be jealous of the Ford Focus ST that will launch in the UK on Thursday.
Based on the Focus, the Focus ST will receive its performance massage from Ford of Europe’s TeamRS. The car’s most notable upgrade is under its hood. TeamRS replaced the Focus’ standard powerplant with a 2.5L turbocharged five-cylinder, tuned to belt out 223 horsepower. That power is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual and allows the Focus ST to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 6.8 seconds. Ford also claims that the Focus ST can lap the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife in 8 minutes 35 seconds.
The exterior of the Focus sees an adequate amount of sprucing for the ST trim level, including 18 inch rollers, a body kit and optional racing stripes.
The interior of the Focus ST also sees an upgrade from lesser Focus models, including push button ignition and Recaro seats.
When the Focus ST hits UK dealers on May 1, it will be priced from £18,250 to £20,850.

Ford’s been talking about a global small car for decades. I’d be surprised if the next generation Focus really is global and really is sold in the U.S.

I like it. And I’ll bet there’s some very useful bottom end torque thanks to that extra piston. If this is any way indicative of the future of Ford’s small cars I’m looking forward to it. I just hope I can resist the temptation not to run out and buy one of the current Foci in the meantime.

It’s a shame domestic automakers think that Americans are complete douchebags & should be treated as such. They’ve been collectivly slapping us in the face for decades. This car is another example of their utter hatered for their fellow Americans. Yeah…..I …..know…….the next generation………..
With the exception of the Corvette or until they completely **** that one up too….. I’m always going to buy foreign cars

Not the subject of the thread.
This is FORD’s turn under the microscope. Still don’t see anything to be pleased with.

The 0-60 is in European seconds. American seconds are much faster, just the way the US gallon is smaller too. It would easily do 0-60 in 6 seconds here in San Francisco.

Okay Ford… time to bring it across the pond. Chevy’s got the Cobalt Turbo… Honda has the Si… Chrysler’s got the SRT-4.
Ford has… wait… um… wait… NOTHING in the econocar performance market.
Are they afraid a fast Focus would cut sales of the gas guzzling Mustang?
What’s the deal here?

At the current exchange rate (dollars/ pounds), this thing would be in the mid $30’s. The regular Focuses would start in the $20’s. That’s why they’re not here.

Rsg’s right. Would you spend $40K on one of these? There are a lot of choices at that price: G35, 328i, CTS, WRX STi, etc. For Americans who care most about horsepower, the competition at the price would blow this car into the weeds.

You are assuming that this car is going to be imported. I don’t think the UAW likes to hear that. If anything, the weak dollar should justify bring the Euro Focus over along with the ST and export them back to Europe! Your 40K Focus ST scenario doesn’t hold water. No Ford is too busy with crossover design #15!

I like it, but I don’t understand the price point. $40 grand seems pretty extravagant considering what is available. Great looking design though, can’t believe I’m saying that about a Ford.

It is a good looking design and I don’t think Ford manufactures 5 cylinder engine. So for 40K you are getting Volvo with Ford oval. The price is right then.

nitroracer; don’t worry, the 2.5 I5 engine can get 300bhp easy, with more on the way with some more serious work, but 300 should see a better 0-60 no worries…
Cars are too fat these days.

That’s a pretty bad ass Focus. Much better than the POS we have over here. Ford really needs this in their home market.
However it would definitely need like 300hp to compete against the FWD sub compact class over here.

If they could do it here for low 30’s, 4WD and 300hp then we’d have something to talk about. Otherwise, GTI’s and WRX’s are like 25 grand so what’s the point?

Don’t forget this car is a great all-rounder.
The torque peaking from 1600rpm is pretty useful and a lot more torque can be squeezed out from a simple chipping.
Awesome overtaking car.
Been in original Focus ST down some decent roads and it’s a hell of a car to be in – really does the job of chucking you back deep into those recaros!

Has Ford not learned anything from Scion/Toyota/Lexus? You lure the young buyers and hope they stay with the brands. Young buyers do not have that much disposable, so a cheap thrill (lower 20k range) or good mpg will do. Enter the Fiesta and the Euro Focus ST, which we are not allowed to have state-side.
The price provided is deceiving to American! It’s UK prices (£18,250 to £20,850) and it sounds like a lot. But check the Mazda3 MPS which is equivalent to a Mazdaspeed3 in the USA first. You will find that the UK Mazda3 MPS starts at £19,100, but yet the Mazdaspeed3 starts at US$23,090. This shows that when you look at prices of car, you MUST consider the average car price in that market. UK cars are priced much higher than the US cars.
So if the Mazdaspeed3, which shares the Euro Focus platform is any indication, this Focus ST will likely price around US$25,000 and probably starting even lower than that. There are plenty of young buyers who could afford that judging from Mazdaspeed3 and WRX sales. The upcoming Lancer Ralliart will only help bolster the case to justify bringing this car over.

All you guys crying about the US Focus kill me. Ford gave you the Focus SVT. Did ya run out and buy them? NOOOOOO!!!! Plus don’t think for a minute Ford is going to EVER let a small car come close to the power numbers of a Mustang! EVER! And for you guys crying about bringing the Euro version over?? Get mama to change you diaper. Ford did that for ya too and did you buy it??? NOOOOOO! Remember the Merkur XR4Ti and Scorpio??? Those cars were Euro cars, hotter than most of the stuff Detroit was putting out at the time AND ahead of there time! The XR4Ti ate BMW’s and Honda’s for breakfast and lunch! I liked the older Euro Focus but this one just doesn’t do it for me. The front looks nice but the back looks like a prius. I’ll pass!
