Ford could cut as many as 9,000 factory jobs through another round of buyouts, a new report finds. During 2006 and 2007, Ford eliminated 33,600 union jobs through buyout and retirement packages. The latest round of buyouts would allow Ford to hire cheaper — by about half — hourly workers.
According to Bloomberg, Ford will not cap the number of people who can accept the buyout package, meaning job cut could cross the 9,000 mark.

The buyouts will be offered to workers at four U.S. factories: Ford ’s St. Louis, Missouri; Edison, New Jersey; Norfolk, Virginia; and Atlanta, Georgia production facilities. Workers have until February 28th to accept the deal and have to leave the company by March 1st. Those who don’t opt for the buyout or relocation to another Ford plant will be placed on a “no-pay, no-benefit leave.”

Another round of buyouts could be announced later this month.
