Ford will soon be going green with an all-electric version of its Focus small car, but those interested in going even greener will have the option of a home-mounted solar energy system.

Through a partnership with SunPower, Ford will offer Focus EV buyers the option of a home solar energy system. There is one catch, however, as the system won’t be used to directly charge the Focus EV.

Instead, the solar energy system is meant to offset the power needed to charge the Focus EV by providing the house with the energy equivalent of driving 1,000 miles per month. In technical terms, that’s about 3,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year.

The solar energy system, which can be installed by Best Buy’s Geek Squad, includes 11 panels that measure four feet by two feet. The system can be mounted to your home’s roof, but the technology doesn’t come cheap. The entire system is expected to set buyers back $10,000, and that’s even after counting all federal tax credits.

The Ford Focus electric will launch later this year in select markets, but Ford has yet to announce pricing.
