Ford to offer new round North American of bonuses

02/20/2008, 5:42 PM

By Drew Johnson

Ford is readying a new round off bonuses for its entire North American work force, a new report finds. The bonuses are intended to reward both blue and white-collar workers for help Ford with its North American turnaround.

While Ford has yet to make an announcement about the bonuses, the Detroit Free Press says that the plan is only awaiting approval from the automaker’s board of directors.

The Dearborn-based automaker has a history of rewarding its workers even in down years. In 2006, Ford lost $12.6 billion but still paid its hourly workers a bonus of $500.

The latest round of bonuses — which will be offered to Ford’s 23,700 salaried and 64,000 hourly workers in North America — will range between $300 and $800 for hourly workers, and could top $15,000 for some top-level executives.

Very interesting. Good for Ford, but do these people truly need these bonuses? I say it’s more for publicity than anything else.

Those “top-level” executives probably don’t deserve it. At least not $15 GRAND!

Maybe they should be rewarding the European division instead.

Top level executives might be making $250,000 a year. What’s the extra 15k? Use that to pay down some of the debt.

And since when is Ford experiencing a “turnaround?” All I see is red ink.

Good job Ford! You promised it to the workers and you kept your word. A happy workforce is a very smart thing to have when all the news seems bad. Ford is definately on a comeback.

The top level executives at Ford should be giving the company 15 large. Anyone had a close look at the new Focus? They might as well have reincarnated the ‘95 Escort. Whoever signed off on that baby should be in counseling.

Ford acknowledging their employees, in whatever modest means possible, is still an act of good faith that should yield benefit to both parties. I do believe that the executives should have foregone their bonuses as an additional demonstration of good faith.

“Ford to offer new round North American of bonuses”
“Ford is readying a new round off bonuses…”

STOP OUTSOURCING LLN. These grammar mistakes (especially in the title) are inexcusable.

I don’t know, with the state of the U.S. auto industry right now, and the spectre of a UAW strike having recently been lifted, I think just having a job right now at Ford should be its own award.

I don’t buy “make the employees” happy argument. Excluding what the executives are truly making in bonuses and just assuming that all hourly and salaried employees are earning the average wage-earner’s bonus ($550), then Ford’s bonus commitment is over $48 million. Next to billions that may not seem like much, but I’m sure every million counts when you’re engineering a turnaround.

Unless Ford needed to dump some money for a tax benefit, then I’m not so sure this is such a good idea. Ford employees should realize that too.
