Ford to recall 3.6 million cars

Ford is recalling 3.6 million cars due to a faulty cruise control deactivation switch that could lead to a fire in the vehicles. Apparently Ford has had several instances of fire in Crown Victoria models, so the automaker is recalling more than a dozen different Ford products produced from 1992-2004.

The cruise control deactivation switch is apparently powered at all times, even when the vehicle is off, which could result in a fire, according to The Washington Post.

Vehicles included in the recall include the following Fords: ‘98-’02 Ranger, ‘92-’97 Crown Victoria, ‘93-’95 Taurus SHO, ‘99-’01 Explorer, ‘01-’02 Explorer Sport, ‘01-’02 Explorer Sport Trac, ‘92-’93 E150-350 vans, ‘97-’02 E150-350 vans, ‘93 F-Series pickups, ‘93 Bronco, ‘03-’04 F-150 Lightning and ‘95-’02 F53 motor homes. Mercury vehicles included are: ‘92-’97 Grand Marquis, ‘94 Capri and ‘99-’01 Mountaineer. Lincoln vehicles included are: ‘93-’98 Mark VIII and ‘92-’97 Town Car.

I think they already recalled some faulty control switches on the F-150… I know I had a recall for something on my F-150, haven’t gotten it fixed yet though.

Phew that’s a hell lot of recalls though.

Again? This happened years ago I owned an 01 Mountaineer Premier and it was recalled for the same issue - in 2002.

Maybe they did fix your RSPINAJR they are just expanding the recall to include more vehicles. WHere are the ford Flamers? I had expected to see 12 pages of DIE FORD DIE! when i clicked on this story. This isn’t really anything big, its probably a 10 minute job to change a 10 dollar part. Its not as bad as broken cam shafts or ball joints that all of a sudden desintegrate.

Had it done on the F150. Took 10 or 15 minutes. Just some stupid new switch on the cruise control (which worked ok for me, but whatever). No big deal.

Jeeps got the same recall for Grand Cherokee’s made from 01-04 or something. I wonder if they got the same switch from the same manufacturer.

95 of these recalls are usually some switch that needs changed out or they need to re route a hose or wire so it won’t get damaged.

I don’t think Ford should be praised for a voluntary recall on 15 year old cars. And just because one auto manufacturer has problems doesn’t let another off the hook. So just because Toyota sucks with recalls and has dangerous parts failures doesn’t make spontaneously combusting Fords ok.

Toyota set Ford up for a recall. That was probably a Toyota part in those recalled Fords. (Just taking Random Jerk’s challenge here)

This recall is over a year old. Ford just added a few more cars to it. This is the anti american media for you.

Technically they didn’t have to do a recall on any of these vehicles. There have not been what is considered an abnormal number of fires in these vehicles. From what I understand, it’s just that they’re pretty sure some of those fires in Crown Vics all had the same cause. But, NHTSA wasn’t involved in initiating it.

The fire danger in these cars is not like the F-150 where the brake fluid was right by the switch. In these cars, there could be a fire if the switch tripped and caught something else on fire, but it was unlikely to be that dangerous (although could be if you were driving and you freaked out and crashed). However, customers were concerned, and that seemed to be enough here.

I think it was a good move. It makes me think even more highly of Ford’s new management. At least they don’t have to get taken to court to initiate recalls like some automakers or like they themselves used to.

I’ve never even heard of one of these things catching on fire…and if one did. I am so sure the media would of had it on the front page and on every website “FORD ALMOST BURNS DOWN UNITED STATES BUY A PRIUS!!!!”

This recall is just an expansion of a failed part from a supplier. The supplier was Texas Instruments. Ford just gets all of the bad news with someone elses bad quality…pathetic American media to get to the bottom of it! Ford notified the government of their action, that was not brought on by force…Ford did it in advance of being made to!! This is exactly what Toyota and Honda does when they know of a problem. The difference is Ford is the bitch boy for the media! Fair and balenced is what we want to see in the news…otherwise its not really news, just opinions.

My comment about this being typical of Ford is not about this specific recall but about all the recalls Ford does and all the recalls they need to do. In my opinion after driving all the ford products (only Ford brand and except the GT), I can honestly say that they make many of the worst driving cars ever. The plastics used are just of such low quality. The interior looks like a 1990s car. American cars have come a long way but so has all the other manufacturers. The problem is the companies raise the bar with every redesign while the American companies play catch up. I would rather buy a Hyundai over a Ford. At least I get a better warranty.

Sunshine: i’d buy SOME hyundais over SOME Fords. Santa Fe over Escape, for example.

Ford sucks, I guess they need to take a page out of GM’s stellar quality and reliability reputation huh? Never mind, Ford should be flushed down the toilet once and for all. They’re a complete joke of what they used to be back in the 60’s.

Just remember folks, for every spontanous combusting Ford out there, there is a perfectly trouble free, super reliable GM car waiting in the wings to take you in.

i give you credit for properly maintaining the cavalier, if you just pay a little attention to american cars they are very reliable, but its all about preventitave maintanance.
god damn dont remind anybody about the cimmaron i see those everywhere still, ugggggh.

I had a Cavalier Z24 in 1998. Not bad, it had a peppy little engine that growled like a little Mustang. It was kind of fun, until you hit the brakes. Then it sounded like a Jack-in-the-Box was exploding, DOING! BOING! PING! Apparently that was GM’s version of an “Anti-Lock Braking System.” Right….

Oh, and then the ball joints went, the trunk lock fell apart, the gas line came loose, one of the gaskets cracked, the muffler fell out, and the electrical system crapped out.

Aside from all that, it was a good little car.

I think it is commendable that Ford is voluntarily recalling cars as old as 15 years.

Deanster, my ‘03 Acura RSX’s a/c went out last week. I was told it would be almost $1,200 to repair. Yeah, I got a few more opinions. I’ll sweat for a while. But I’m now one step closer to a new Silverado.

If your willing to put yourself on the waiting list for new Silverados I can probably get you one in about 12 months. GMcan’t build em fast enough. Now a used, low mileage Ford, Dodge, Nissan or Tundra I have a million of those things that have been traded (suckers who will take anything, even 10k below book just to get out of their POS and into a Silverado) so you have your pick if you want.
