Confusing model options and packages will be a thing of the past — at least at Ford . Car shoppers often are baffled and frustrated the complexity of custom configuring a car, and Ford CEO Alan Mulally said he is going to do something about it.
“We’re going to have what the customer wants, packaged the way they want it,” Mulally told trade publication Automotive News. Mulally said fewer options and more standard features give consumers peace of mind while reducing engineering and manufacturing costs.
By offering only a few logical options packages, Ford hopes consumers will also be more likely to buy cars straight off dealer lots. With less possible configurations, dealers will be able to stock a larger percentage of the popular setups.
The flip side of simplifying options is consumers are sometimes forced to pay for features they won’t use. Mulally didn’t say how Ford will address this issue.
