Ford’s United States sales crossed the 2 million unit threshold this week, marking the first time the Dearborn-based automaker has reached that achievement since 2007. The news also means Ford is the nation’s single best-selling marque.

Ford’s lineup of high-quality, fuel-efficient cars, utilities and trucks continues to attract more and more new customers,” said Erich Merkle, Ford’s sales analysis manager. “With gasoline prices tracking higher than last year, customers continue to move toward smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, whether they are passenger cars or utilities.”

Ford expect sales of its small cars to be up by more than 20 percent this year. And, despite those higher gas prices, Ford’s utility vehicles are on pace for a sales increase of more than 30 percent.

Ford will launch all-new versions of its popular Escape crossover and Fusion sedan next year, so it’s quite possible the Blue Oval could end 2012 with more than 2 million sales.
