Ford trademarks Extend name, indicates future plug-in hybrid model

10/25/2007, 10:10 AM

By Drew Johnson

Ford has filed for a trademark on the name Extend in relation to a “plug-in hybrid automobile,” a new report finds. Ford has stated that it is developing plug-in hybrid technology and hopes to have a vehicle to market within the next 5 to 10 years. Ford has also recently partnered with Southern California Edison to develop its plug-in hybrid technology.

It appears Ford will join General Motors and Toyota in the development of plug-in hybrids, although it sounds like Ford could be lagging behind its rivals. GM is planning to launch the Volt plug-in hybrid in 2010 with Toyota’s plug-in hybrid following in 2011.

..I wouldn’t mind if they showed a concept of their plug-in vehicle like GM did with the Volt. That way, I know that there is really something they are working on and that they are serious about it

EXTEND! EXTEND! LOL! What a lame name!

I agree with CTS DRIVER. “E” stands for “EXIT to another letter of the alphabet!”

Actually, it’s a shame Futura is tied up by Pep Boys. It would be a great name for this vehicle.

10 years?? When Toyota and GM will likely have them in production within 2??

Said it once already today and I’ll say it again: Ford is irrelevant.

They need to hire someone with an imagination! or maybe they need to more action with those strap ons.

Too little, too late. Trademarking a product name with no product in sight is like registering a Web domain without a company behind it — meaningless. Another bold move.

CA36GTP- 5-10 years.

tripleonefive- Not able to say I’ve seen you around as of lately.

Mazdaman, tripleonefive, CTS- It’s very likely this is going to be an SUV, very possible to do something with the Edge which has been rumored to go hybrid for the past few years. If it’s any other SUV in their lineup, it would be the Taurus X. If it was the Explorer or Expedition there might be rumors floating around about the F-150 getting the same treatment, which there isn’t.

Commodore- Agreed. I would like to see them showcase a concept with this technology, not just a concept, and not just the technology. Put it all together, maybe even make the hybrid run on E85 and gasoline.

Let me correct myself… they’ve already showcased the plug-in Ford Edge. There’s one showcase for you, commodore.
