The Ford Transit Connect Electric’s low energy costs and maneuverable design make it a good fit for delivery services in any urban setting, but new regulations in California are making it even more appealing for buyers in that state: the little van now qualifies for $22,000 worth of rebates in the Golden State.

Next month, the California Air Resources Board will add an additional category to its Hybrid Incentive Voucher Program that awards buyers of zero-emissions light-duty commercial vehicles (with a GVWR between 5,001 and 8,500 pounds) like the Ford Transit Connect Electric a $15,000 rebate.

Available to both public and private fleets, this incentive can be combined with the $7,500 Federal EV Tax Credit for a total savings of $22,000 on the green hauling machine. Of course, even after the rebates are applied, the Transit Connect Electric (MSRP: $57,400) won’t exactly be cheap.

There are, as always, a few disclaimers: after the $15,000 rebate on the first vehicle, the voucher drops to $12,000 value for subsequent EV purchases. After the 2011 fiscal year draws to a close, the proposed incentives fall to $12,000 on the first three vehicles, $10,000 on the next 27 bought, $8,000 on vehicle purchases 31-65 and $6,000 on vehicles 66-100.
