U.S.-spec Ford Transit Connect spied with no camo! (including interior shots)

August7

The Ford Transit Connect is headed for the U.S. for the 2010 model year and our spy photographers have spotted the U.S. model without any camouflage. The U.S.-spec Transit will largely remain unchanged from its European counterpart, but Ford will give the Transit a slight refresh — both inside and out — for the U.S. market.

The Transit Connect, on sale in Europe since 2003, is designed to create a new commercial vehicle niche for North America, where large, fuel-thirsty vans like the Ford E-Series have reigned supreme for decades.

Compared to the European model, changes have been made to the grille – as well as to the front bumper, and possibly a slight alteration to the headlamps. In addition – we have exclusive interior photos – showing an updated look to the aging interior. Changes include rearranging the gauges on the dash, various controls on the steering wheel and new, rounded air vents.

The Transit Connect features a 2.0 liter Duratec four cylinder engine and an automatic transmission, although the European-specification vehicles displayed in Chicago featured diesel engines and five-speed manual transmissions. The four cylinder/automatic combination is estimated to return 19 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway, a 40 percent increase over full size vans.

Two sliding side doors, vertical 180-degree-opening “barn door” cargo doors, a low floor and a high ceiling differentiate the Transit Connect from its rivals. The XLT model will be available with a 270 degree hinge. Ford claims the vehicles offer 155 cubic feet of cargo space behind the front seats. The load space can accommodate items up to 6.5 feet long and 5 feet wide.

  11. Judging by the newest pics, they really dumbed down the front end from the one shown in the February pics.. the headlights are no longer canted away from the grille, and are instead pretty flat. The grille is no longer chrome or connected to the lights. But I like the lower fascia that matches the rest of Euro Ford’s offerings.

  12. So it can’t even haul a 6×8 sheet of plywood laying flat? What a waste of a vehicle.

  18. I stopped caring when they said no diesel. Why don’t they just bring it over as is? Stupid Ford!! The only reason they sell so many super duties is because of the diesel option.

  20. To toot the horn, you just have to momentarily connect the two yellow wires in the steering wheel. Don’t worry, their working on it….

  21. Ford’s out front in the “World’s Fugliest Van” competition. Dodge designers are reportedly sharpening their pencils to beat their next design with the ugly stick a little longer.

  23. raineman, I think standard sheet of plywood is 4 x 8, not 6 x 8. There is a version of this truck that will take 4 x 8 sheets standing on their side. I don’t know if the US is getting the long version or not.

PetrolHeadPete: this is not a Transit. Transit is bigger. This is a Transit _Connect_.
