Ford, Mahindra to co-develop EV, SUVs

After naming China its top priority, Ford is now looking to expand its presence in India.

Ford has announced plans to expand its partnership with Mahindra, co-developing an electric vehicle and two SUVs for the fast-growing Indian market.

The memoranda of understanding include a midsize SUV, built on a Mahindra platform, along with a compact model and some type of all-electric vehicle.

Ford hopes to use the Indian automaker's powertrains to expand its product range. Both companies also intend to collaborate on connected-car products.

"Ford is committed to offering the best vehicles, technologies and services that fit the lifestyles and preferences of Indian consumers," says Ford global markets president Jim Farley.

The Blue Oval has already labeled China its top priority. Car sales in India are much lower than China or the US. India is the second largest country in terms of population, however, representing a significant long-term growth opportunity.
