The Jag AJV8 isn't going anywhere anytime soon. It is also used in modified for in nearly all gas Land Rovers. The Yahama V8 appears to be destined just for Volvos and nothing else. It also I think designed for transverse applications which rules out most jags and Land Rovers. I see the AJV8 getting pumped up in performance from the current 300-305 hp up to 340-360 hp depending on application. The SC version of the AJV8 will probably go up to 450hp or so up from the current 390-400 hp.

Jag does not a entry level coupe/sedan and the X-type should have been great but they screwed it up. It just doesn't have the refinment of a comparable C-Class or 3 series. They should let it die and then bring back an all new model, made in aluminium, that is avaliable in both coupe and sedan form.

People always said that the X-Type killed Jaguar because it was to "low-class," too "volume." I think the real problem was that it was cheap quality, poor at best. Jaguar became an uninspiring modern brand because that car was not luxury and was not quality.

Now, that said, there is still a legacy that follows Jag. The XK is a phenominal car and the direction I'd like to see the brand go. It is honest to that legacy image.

Jaguar needs four cars going forward, really. A new S-Type, which they get in late-2007, although I'm a bit skeptical about it. We'll see at introduction (NAIAS?). A new XJ, which is slated for 2009, I think. A new mid-level sport sedan with different styling cues and powertrain options than the XK (also a lower price). And the XK. Four cars. High quality. Desireable.

I think a new engine is necessary. The 4.2L is a very nice engine, but it's a little bit old. Maybe that Yahama 4.4 that Ford was so quick to abandon? Tune it to get 330hp 330 torq - nothing over the top, just understated and very smooth and efficient. Also, take the new 3.7 and tune it for 280/265 or so for the base S-Type. Turbo variants and DI technology encouraged as the Jaguar line shakes out. 4.4 with 450hp if we can't afford a brand new 6.0L. Also, add a diesel, a smooth, clean 3.6L diesel from Europe?

Then, after two or three years with these cars in place, Ford can consider (and maybe should consider) a premium RWD/AWD smaller body for Jag as long as Lincoln and Jag have their defined realms.

Oh well... dreams...

GMFan is right in a way - Ford US can't comepete against GM - GM being smart enough to use Aussie platforms and models and even European offerings...

Ford just have to do the same... but they don't and this is their downfall.

Still, not bad on the figures front, bar Jaguar... I agree with 1c3d0g about them needing to fix up. Jaguar is a great Marque with ridiculous amounts of potential - it just needs to think like Jaguar should.

I'm pretty surprised at the Jaguar sales, since they seem to make decent cars. The XJ is great, and I'm even coming around to the looks of the new XK. I guess these are all low-volume halo cars, though, and Jaguar is saddled with the uninspiring X-type and ugly S-type that are just absolutely getting killed by BMW, M-B, Lexus, Audi, and Infiniti.

Hopefully the next S-type will be competitive.

GMFAN get your head out of your arse...FOMOCO has more all-new products coming in the next yr. and forward than GM. This is just the beginning signs of Ford's turn-about. Watch the rest of this year, many will be surprised when they see the sales numbers. Ha -Naysayers! :p"

I was talking with my regional rep the other week and although he primarily deals with Land Rover he does do some work with Jaguar as well. Mainly we talked about the LR2 but we also talked about Jaguar's problems. Basicly his opinion is that Jag has the same problem caddy did a few years ago. All the designs are stale and their entire customer base is made up of old people. Jag is literarly seeing their customer base die off right in front of them which is exactly what Caddy had happen.

Caddy is in good shape now but it took a radical change of design philosophy to do that. He is not sure that jaguar can make that kind of radical change. It is really unfortunate too as Jaguar cars are really very nice. They have top notch relablity now which is bordering on Lexus like levels. They are one of the few brands that have actually reduced the weight in their cars by going to mostly aluminium construction. Jaguar probably has more experience building mass market aluminium bodied cars then any other manufacturer.

But none of that will matter if they can't increase their customer base. They have to reach a younger market but right now none of their cars speak to that younger demographic.

I am glad Ford still sells more vehicles than Toyota.
I wish both GM and Ford to reverse their fortunes and increase market share.
But Ford should get rid of Jaguar. The sales figures are extremely disappointing.

If you equate Rodeo Drive to an area of Compton, CA, the Bronx or Newark, NJ... My SRX wasn't worthy of the local PigglyWiggly let alone some swanky shopping district.

GM has some great product on the way. I don't think Ford can even come close. GM's rebound is just around the corner. Cadillac went from the grave yard to Rodeo Drive in just a few short years. I am sure the other divisions are not far behind.

Ford isn't as bad off as everyone thinks they are. They are just getting used as a scapegoat to make the GM slide seem like it's over and GM is so much better off now.

I would much rather see GM continue to fall in the toilet before Ford goes under.
