It appears that efforts by a group of important Saturn dealers have paid off: General Motors has apparently received some “informal” inquiries from unnamed foreign automakers about taking over the Saturn brand. The dealers pressed GM to study the feasibility of spinning off the ill-fated brand, which the Detroit automaker says it will close by 2011.
An industry consultant hired by GM to shop around the Saturn brand, Steve Girsky, told Automotive News that his team is now studying the viability of spinning off the entire brand to keep it viable for the more than 400 Saturn dealers operating across North America.
A potential suitor would gain access to building Saturn vehicles in under-utilized GM plants, which would, by our estimation, keep costs down for a third party and keep GM’s union workers employed.
The spun-off Saturn would likely keep its current lineup through 2011. Girsky didn’t name any suitors, but said he has had some interest from GM competitors, including foreign manufacturers.

I’m a Saturn owner, and used to work at the local Saturn dealer. While I would like to see it survive as a spin-off, even with Renault or Fiat cars in the showroom, I would be disappointed if it fell into Chinese or Indian hands. One thing is for sure – it won’t survive without the support of another brand.

This is great news. Keeps people employed is what the N.American auto industry and economy needs. I’m looking forward to the day Chinese automakers make their way to N.America. It is no different from the Europeans, Japanese and Koreans carving a market share here.

Or do you live in LALA land where it’s OK to defraud your Country.? IYou obviously need to learn a lesson or two in Patriotism and protectionism. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. There was no need to be a racist about it. The politics of a country has nothing to do with selling cars in a free capitalist market in N.America. The point is that there is no need for racism.

The comments made by NMOFGM were uncalled for, we can all agree on that. Even though I support GM, I disagree with the way he stretches truths and half-truths to the point of absurdity. It is pretty sad for him to so proudly display his racist beliefs.

Fan, I don’t think he’s a proponent for GM in any way. I think he’s definitely practising guerilla marketing, just not on behalf of the company in his handle. Trying to make real GM fans look as bad as he is, if you get what I mean. No company with any clue about PR would advocate this kind of action, and PR is everything to GM right now. He’s so far beyond that he effectively drives people away from the brands, turning their hate for him into a hate for other fans, in turn making them hate the company itself and their products.
I’m begging you all not to fall for his ****. He’s obviously not an idiot, just a low-life.

NMOFGM is a troll. He spews his hate in every comment he makes on this blog & the site administrators still let him spew that crap. He isn’t worth the toilet paper I wipe my butt with & he doesn’t influence me one bit about a GM brand or any other. I come here because I like cars American, German, French, Itailian, Japanese, Korean, etc…
Who said a Chinese automaker was consedering buying the brand??? We don’t know who it may eventually be so calm down until we knoow for sure. I would hate for those 400 dearlers to go out of business & all those people loose their jobs. We’ve lost enough jobs over the last year but I’m affraid things are going to get worse before they get better.
I may not own a Saturn, but I don’t want to see them die either.

Whoever or whatever has intentions of buying Saturn had better hurry while there’s still something moving. I drive by our local Saturn store on a regular basis and the place is a graveyard. Granted Saturn didn’t have much of a pulse before GM announced their intention to put them out to the curb with the rest of the garbage but now they’re close to flatlining. Still, why would anyone want an operation that has existed solely on life support since day one?

Johnny, someone who wants to gain access to the US market, that’s who. A dealer network and factory floor space in one shot, without having to build the infrastructure out of pocket. Fiat’s doing it with Chrysler, and it can easily be done by buying Saturn.

You got a ready-made pipeline to middle America here for Peugeot or Renault (assuming they wanted to relaunch the Renault brand here against their own Nissan). Makes sense to me, and I would love to see Peugeot hot hatches in Saturn showrooms in a couple of years, much as I would love to see NMOFGM run over by one.
The psycho-extreme pro-GM diatribes are funny; the racist stuff is not.

Anyone else think this is a bad idea? I mean, I am all up for Saturn being bought if GM can pull it off…. but to sell them with a built-in tie-in to keep the UAW happy just isn’t going to happen. No company will want to buy the cancer that is UAW.

It would be a *beautiful* thing for Saturn to sprout out as a new American automotive company, independent from anybody else. However, that’s out of reality, next best would to see it become not an outlet for foreign cars, but American cars with support from someone else.

It’d be a plus to keep these folks working, even if the union is dropped.
MercMark: “I’d rather see it disappear than go Chinese.”
not sure I agree.
ayrtonJ: “It is no different from the Europeans, Japanese and Koreans carving a market share here.” You’re right. and more competition is good for the buyer.
Need more oil for GM: I love the way you sprinkle the word “ignorant” in your “This is GM Country, not Sushiland so no, the Chinks are NOT welcome here.” post.
“If Saturn falls into the hands of the Japs or the Chinks, they will no longer be worthy of survival and should die.”
Depends on the product, no?

I bet at least one person in China has eaten sushi.
JakeK66: “He has the right to say what he wants.” yep.

You’re right: Think renault or some other brand folks here are clomoring for.
orangecones: “I am all up for Saturn being bought if GM can pull it off…. but to sell them with a built-in tie-in to keep the UAW happy just isn’t going to happen.” You’re right. The “cancer” language wasn’t necessary, but your point is good.

Personally I think GM would’ve been better off just straight on importing Opels as is and change the name Saturn to……………..Opel. People would pay a premium for a German brand but not for a Saturn.
Eventually they could’ve moved production to the US.
I don’t want the Chinese to get their hands on any dealers here.
