Former Ford employee arraigned over trade secret theft

11/19/2009, 4:48 PM

By Mark Kleis

After allegedly stealing trade secrets valued at $32 million and attempting to sell them to Chinese competitors, Xiang Dong Yu was arraigned today in a US District Court.

Xiang Dong Yu, who goes by Mike Yu, age 47, was arrested last month when he returned to America from Beijing China for the first time since leaving Ford Motor Company and allegedly stealing trade secrets in 2007.

Yu was indicted in October on theft of trade secrets, attempted theft of trade secrets and unauthorized access to a protected computer. Yu has been in federal custody since landing in Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on an inbound flight from his native China last month.

Now reports show that Judge Magistrate Mark A. Brandon has tentatively ordered Yu’s release on bond to Pastor Peter Wu, head of the Chinese Gospel Church in Livonia. The church has reportedly rented an apartment for Yu in Westland.

Assistant United State Attorney Cathleen Corken has told Judge Brandon that Yu is a potential flight risk due to his lack of ties in the US. Yu has no family or income in the US and has no reason to remain in the country should he be released.

Corken said, “His whole life is in China.” Corken went on to explain that even though Yu’s passport has been seized, Yu could still obtain new travel documents from his Chinese consulate.

Brandon has delayed issuing his official order to release Yu on $100,000 bond in order to give federal prosecutors time to appeal the decision.

Yu’s attorney argued that the US government has unfairly labeled Yu as a flight risk. Yu’s attorney, George Donnini, has stated that Yu would adhere to the travel restrictions and even wear an electronic locating device if released on bail.

I would not be terrified of prospect being interrogated by Dick. Man is near 70 year old and has very bad heart. Prospectus of going hunting with Dick Cheney would scare any terrorist into confession.

On the article> can some one verify that “Xiang Dong” is “Mike” in Chinese?

What could this man possibly steal from Ford thats worth 32 million? The blue prints to their crappy cars? The Chinese wouldn’t spend a dime on those.

What were the Chinese trying to steal from Ford? Couldn’t they have picked a better company to steal trade secrets from like maybe………….GM (oh no GM sucks)………………Chrysler (I think Chrysler steals from the Chinese)…………I guess the Chinese didn’t have a choice; you’ve got to steal from the best!

What is interesting is how valuation has been done? Is that what Mike Dong asking for the information? It is like news stories you hear about police busting cocaine ring and getting 32 millions “street value” worth of drugs. I would like to see street anywhere where they pay that much for dope.

Borat, alot of Chinese people have 2 names. Chinese and an American one. When they come into America they pretty much give themselves a new name. and it could be any name they want to name themselves. next time you talk with to a Chinese person ask them what there Chinese name is and most likely they have one.

not a lot of sympathy for this guy…guys like this make it tough on the legit foreign nationals working in the states, tho…

i work with a lot of chinese (by birth) in my field…funny story real quick…we once had an interviewee visiting from out of town who went by a chinese name that gave no clue (to us) as to what sex this person was…was it a chick? a dude? none of us had a clue…so we asked a chinese postdoc whether this name was male or female, and he clearly stated the interviewee was a chick…fast forward to when the interviewee shows up, and it turns out to be a dude! we were all looking at each other with that “uh, we were told by an authority you were a chick, so this is odd” look…we confronted him after, and he just threw his hands up in the air, “sorry, i thought it was a chick!”…chinese names can even be confusing to chinese people!

Lefty , there are 1.2 billion Chinese. We are aware of at least 4-5 dialects without ability to recognize their symbols (my experience comes from Chinese restaurants and I counted 4-5 cuisines). For comparison there are about 600 million people living in Europe and they have over 100 dialects. Heck, most of people on this site don’t understand what I type and we have only 1 language to share!
