ForThree? Next Smart car might seat an extra person

05/23/2006, 9:26 AM

By admin

The car slated to replace the Smart ForTwo will be about a foot longer and will seat three passengers instead of two, according to a report by Italy’s La Repubblica newspaper. Recently, smart discontinued its ForFour model, which has four doors and seated four passengers. Smart has said it wants to focus on a single model going forward. A three-seater two-door could be the necessarily compromise between the ForTwo and the ForFour. DaimlerChrysler is said to be building the replacement to the ForTwo with the United States in mind, and a three-passenger capacity would likely be seen as a major plus to U.S. customers. A final decision on bringing Smart to the U.S. is expected in June, according to Klaus Maier, head of sales and marketing at Mercedes. Maier spoke with the Handelsblatt newspaper, which was cited by AFX News. In April, AFX said a decision on Smart would come in May.

You can drive them in Canada!

They’re not commonplace, but it’s not hard to see them here in Ottawa these days. A few government agencies will have one or two in their fleets, and you’ll see private Smart fortwos downtown surprisingly often.

There is one in Winter Park, FL as well. I’ve also seen a few Citroens there, interestingly enough.

In larger european cities, there are a lot of Smarts around. When I lived in Germany, I had one too. And I would love to have one now, but since the danish car-tax is at 180%, it’s too expencive for me to own a resonable car :(

But I dont see why you can’t drive them in the US….

Those of us in the US woulld have to worry about getting squashed like a grape by soccer moms perched 10 feet above the ground in their stupid SUVs.

I agree with que. The only place they’d sell in America is Chicago, LA, and NY, maybe Atlanta. Otherwise you run the risk of getting run over by idiotic SUV drivers. They’re everywhere here in Europe though, I have a great picture of a normal day in Budapest where there’s just SMART lined up all the way down the street.

Not Atlanta, please! You’d be dead inside of 15 minutes. Country roads and strictly city driving. These are surely not meant for I’s 75, 85 and 285!
