After the EPA gave Ford’s Fusion Hybrid the highest mpg rating of any vehicle in its class, the Dearborn, Michigan, automaker has another number to brag about: Highest mpg rating of any conventional gas engine in its class, at 34 mpg. The rating applies to 2010 Fusion S sedans with the four-cylinder engine and the optional six-speed automatic transmission.
Four-cylinder, six-speed Chevrolet Malibus, Saturn Auras and Pontiac G6s earn 33 mpg, according to the EPA, and four-cylinder, five-speed automatic Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys earn 31 mpg.
Fusion was also rated at 23 mpg in the city, 1 mpg ahead of the GM sedans and Accord and 2 mpg ahead of the Camry.
Leftlane recently had the opportunity to sample the Fusion in all four of its engine choices, though we weren’t given the chance to measure conventional gas engine fuel economy. Look for another more in-depth review in the future.

We can also see how Pontiac is doing being a “niche” brand

Ford’s reliability is through the roof, especially compared to Toyota (do some research). And the Accord and Camry just went through major platform revisions, so I doubt seriously that they are going to make up a 3mpg deficit (or roughly 9%) very easily.
What irritates the fire out of me is that Honda was stupid enough to drop the V6 hybrid in favor of a diesel that isn’t even out yet. What were they thinking? I love my Accord Hybrid. It gets great gas mileage, 26 MPG city and 31 MPG highway (real, measured values over 75k miles) and it’s got more cojones than any of the current V6 options in the class. I’d gladly buy a new one today if it were available since mine is over 80K miles and is nearing the end of its extended warranty.

The Fusion is the best kept secret in this segment. Now the new Fusion has best in class fuel economy…safety equal to the Accord and superior to the Camry…greater dependability then the Japs… the fresh design makes it more exciting(that is objective)…it is also less expensive then the Japs. This is the best value car in the segment by far. Great job Ford.

1115: Your argument against the new Ford that is either in showrooms now or soon will be, and has been certified by the EPA, is that it isn’t competitive with the new Jap cars that haven’t even been announced, much less are available???? That’s a pretty good one, especially considering those jap cars aren’t even competitive with a GM that’s been on the market for a while, fuel economy wise (and fuel economy is what’s important to this article, and beating the jap manufacturers at fuel economy is what jap fanboys such as yourself have accused Detroit of being incapable of doing, even as they are in fact doing it).
Seriously, is there any “ignore” feature on this message board, or are we forced to sort through moronic rantings such as 1115’s with every thread? I’m relatively new to this website and have already become tired of 1115. I’ve yet to see anything of any intelligence or meaningful contribution to any discussion spew from his keyboard. Every freakin’ thread, he pollutes with his factless, baseless fanboy rantings! I am reminded of the classic Warner Brothers cartoons where the big bulldog is constantly pestered by the small, yappy dog constantly digging for attention.
…and acknowledgement. Forgive me, other, more sensible LNN members, for I have sinned by providing him it. It’s just that I’ve read enough of his foolishness and this comparing a real car to an imaginary one and assuming the imaginary one will be better just because it’s got a funny shaped H or T on the grille just pushed me over the edge. I’m certain he’ll try to goad me into an E-fight, but I promise I won’t fall to his level (again – this current rant notwithstanding).
Welcome back, Detroit. There are those of us who have missed you. Maybe, just maybe, some of us will look past our blinders and even forgive you.

By the way, I might point out that the most recent issue of Car and Driver rated the Fusion Hybrid #1 in a comparo between it, the Camry, and the Altima*.
Think about it: Car and Driver magazine actually rated a Ford ahead of a Toyota. The apocalypse is upon us.
*The Malibu “hybrid lite” was in the comparo too, but it was simply outclassed by the others. Not neccessarily an inferior car, but definitely didn’t belong in that comparison of “real” hybrids.

Your Comment”Not in reliability and resale I would glady give those up for a reliable car MPG’s mean nothing when your car is in the repair shop and you are on the bus
The funny part is you people are getting excitied over mpg’s WOW”
Fusion is reliable and the 2010 model is superior to camry and accord in every conceivable way. BTW, the Accord I-4 with auto only gets 30mpg, not 31 as stated above. In fact, thats about the same highway mileage as a four cylinder Avenger. The 6 also only manages 30mpg on the highway.
Now the top 5 midsize four cylinders in mileage are domestic branded. Mazda and Honda are brining up the rear. If GM adds DI to their 2.4L engines like in the Equninox mileage will improve by at least 1mpg to better compete with Ford. What will import humpers say to discount the Fusion? I am becoming more of a Ford fan every day.
“Think about it: Car and Driver magazine actually rated a Ford ahead of a Toyota. The apocalypse is upon us.”

I’m with you buddy, but 1115 serves a purpose. As 1115 has, I believe, stated, he is not against the domestics . . . he just refuses to acknowledge their short-term gains. Most of us disagree with him, but if his rants keep Ford from resting on its laurels then I am all for it! The only thing that can stop an American comeback in the auto industry is complacency. So, let 1115 keep bad-mouthing them. I’m sure a few Ford engineers peruse car forums once in awhile and 1115 gives them a reason to stay motivated. For all we know, tripleonefive is a Ford shareholder who is egging them on to protect his investment . . . I doubt it, but it sure makes his rants more palatable.

Ford’s reliability is through the roof, especially compared to Toyota (do some research).
The research shows that Toyota and Honda hold their value better. The 90 day JD Powers and CR reports mean nothing bc the car has not stood the test of time like I have said many times before
I need some proof that the Accord is 30mpg lol You will say anything against J2 Not that it matters because the Accord and Camry are still the class leaders and the Fusion and Malibu have uphill battles
The short term doesnt matter bc the long term reliability of the car and the brand is what counts
Rover Nippon Beat iare more who cant defeat my argument Try provididng a link or a quote and add to the thread. Sorry losers the gang mentality has no bearing here since one of you cant prove that D3 cars have a higher resale or reliability than J2 …and you are not going to be able to until around 2018 Keep trying though
There is no victory for d3 until they are taking buyers out of the imports at a rate of 50% or more and the D3 cars have the same or higher resale of the J2 comp. Im not counting a few mpg as a victory This is not going to make people go out and buy the Fusion based on what I said earlier

I like to feed 1115 just because his reactions are so funny. He reminds me of the part when Napoleon Dynamite was telling the story of shooting 50 badgers with a 12 gauge shotgun in order to save his cousin.
Short term DOES matter. That’s what attracts the people. Long term matters, too, because that’s what causes people to return. If they buy in for the attraction and thrill at first, but there is no real substance, they will discard the vehicle and try something new. However, there should be a good initial attraction, too, or else there is little interest. I guess buying a car is kind of like finding a woman. I think it’s safe to say that GM’s cars are like the hot blonde chicks that are built like brick $#¡†houses – great trophies, wonderful sex, but only talk about shampoo and nail polish and end up being psychotic later on. Toyotas and Hondas are like short, ugly chicks – they treat you well, make great friends, and are good for long term relationships, but you are embarrassed at first to tell your friends you have one. Euro cars are the gorgeous, intelligent women that are extremely high maintenance and will bleed you dry. But every now and then, you find one that gives you the best of everything – one that looks great, never stops working, doesn’t cost a lot of money to maintain, never makes too much noise, is able to thrill when you need it, keeps you smiling and will make you cry if you lose it. I’ve been lucky to have three cars like that, but even luckier to have a wife like that.
But I’ll be honest, I never would have approached my wife if I didn’t think she was pretty. I also would never look at a car that I didn’t think looked good. And this new Fusion is looking good.
As far as proof, well, my 1992 Ford Escort was the most reliable car I ever owned. That’s all the proof THIS buyer needs.

One could argue that surveys, and reviews from sources like Car & Driver, Consumer Reports, and others are “proof” of the reliability of a company’s products… people have been relying on this type of info for years.
Speaking from personal experience (specifically in terms of reliability), Honda and Ford products were great, Mazda (RX-8) was horrendous, while BMW and Porsche were somewhere in between.
I’m not sure that reliability has to do with a company’s national origin as much as the way a company conducts its business.

I’ve purchased the following vehicles either new or with less than 5000 miles:
1) 1998 Ford Escort Sport. We kept this car for 4 years and in this time it never had a single unscheduled service visit except to replace a flat tire. My wife still pines for that car.
2) 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT Wow, what a hunk of junk. This thing was put together by drunken monkeys on a binge. The interior not only fell apart in under a year, but the carpet grew mold that was nearly indestructible, and the passenger seat collected condensation during humid weather that dripped into the mold and continuously fed it. This being a horrible car was horribly disappointing because I had owned a 1991 Eclipse GS which I absolutely adored.
3) 2001 Ford Focus Wagon SE. This was the replacement for the Escort when we had a baby and needed a bigger car. Although this car was way more reliable than the Eclipse it wasn’t quite as good as the Escort. The Focus was notorious for problems with the steering rack leaking power steering fluid and there was a recall about it. We had to have the repair twice but never paid a penny for it. As with the Escort, we had zero out of pocket repair expenses except for tires.
4) 2001 Mazda Millenia. This was the replacement for the Eclipse when we had a baby and needed a bigger car. This car was rock-solid and used the same 2.5L Duratec V6 found in the Contour and Taurus. As with the other cars under the Ford umbrella we had no out of pocket repair expenses and this one never saw the inside of a dealership’s service department.
5) 2003 Dodge RAM Laramie Hemi. This was a fantastic vehicle. Fast. Sexy. Great interior. Perfect seats. I’d still have this truck today if an illegal alien driving his girlfiriend’s Explorer (thankfully insured) hadn’t pulled out in front of her at 45 MPH. The truck would have been repairable except for the 4 foot deep ditch that bent the frame as she plowed into it trying to avoid the Explorer (which was not a successful attempt). I really miss this truck, as does my wife.
6) 2004 Nissan Titan SE. This was the replacement for the Ram after it was totalled. It’s a great truck and I haven’t had a single mechanical failure, but have had to have an unscheduled service to have the driver’s side window re-seated after it dislodged because it was frozen to the weather stripping. I’ve racked up a lot of miles in this truck and my only complaints are uncomfortable seats (compared to the Ram) and horrible, horrible fuel mileage as the best I’ve ever gotten was 16.1 MPG and the average is 14.5 MPG.
7) 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid. I’ve owned three Accords (the others were a 1984 Accord hatchback and a 1992 Accord EX sedan), and though this one is the largest, most luxurious and gets the best mileage, I’ve had the most problems with it. Honda basically put out a beta software package wihen they introduced the car and I had to take it to the dealership for issues with the active noise cancellation and a mandatory software upgrade to protect the life of the hybrid’s battery. I’ve put a lot of hard miles on this car and mechanically it has been sound. Once the software issues were fixed it’s been a great car.
The point of all of this? Ford has been good to us, and Honda has as well (except for beta-testing the software for the hybrid). Dodge and Nissan have also been good to us. I’ll never buy another Mitsubishi after my 2000 Eclipse experience.
I’ve owned many more used cars but since it wouldn’t be fair to use them in this list because of prior owner abuse, I can tell you that the ones that were trouble-free were my 1984 Accord, 1986 CRX, 1991 Eclipse GS, 2002 Accord, and 2004 Dakota 4×4.
What’s wonderful to experience is the rise in quality of both Ford and Dodge since the 1990’s. I’ve come to take Hondas for granted when it comes to quality, but the absolute most trouble-free vehicles I’ve owned have been the 1998 Escort and the 2001 Millenia, both of which are Ford products.
