A growing number of DaimlerChrysler shareholders are calling for a spin-off of Chrysler, which they say is dragging down the group, according to Reuters.
“I would welcome a separation of Daimler from Chrysler,” said Ingo Speich, portfolio manager for car stocks at German fund manager Union Investment. “Cooperation between Mercedes-Benz and Chrysler is still very limited,” he said.
“I think a demerger is very realistic,” said Juergen Meyer, fund manager at Sweden’s SEB Asset Management. “I don’t see the synergies that DaimlerChrysler has been pursuing for years. Customers’ desires simply do not fit together,” he said.

Chrysler built cruddy cars in 60’s, etc.. Chrysler builds cruddy cars today. MB & Chrysler are Oil & Water.

I’d love to see the assessment of mergers / buy-out successes in the auto industry? Ford plowing big bucks into Jag and getting nothing, Aston Martin being a wash, LR & Volvo seem to be doing ok.
Daimler takes out the Chrysler group and gets nothing and then all the investment placements of GM in the likes of Subaru, Isuzu, Fiat.
I’ve read several whitepapers on how M&A activity success rate is

Ford/Volvo seems to have worked out pretty well — Ford got a bunch of expertise and Volvo got some financial stability. Ditto for GM/Saab, although GM made out better there — the specialness of the Saab brand has been ruined, maybe permanently, by those Subaru Imprezas and Chevy Tahoes running around in Saab cladding. (Born from jets, my ass.)
Daimler/Chrysler seems to have hurt both sides though. Chrysler can’t absorb Mercedes engineering into Calibers and Sebrings, and hasn’t been helped by Mercedes’ bizarre high-volume aspirations, which cut into Chrysler’s territory.

Chrysler has served in usefulness for Daimler, and now it’s time to close shop. If someone were to buy Chrysler they would struggle keeping it float for more than a year before it plunged into the abyss of reality.

So where is Lee Iacoca when you need him ? he brought them back form the abyss once before… maybe its too big a job this time though… Id sure like to see Mopar make it though, maybe the challenger comming out for them soon will help some ? it sure looks like a WINNER to me…-

Chrysler just isn’t very well thought out. You have the Aspen which looks nearly identical to the Durango. The 300, while it looks better in my opinion is the same thing as a Charger and a Magnum, on the inside they pretty much look the same, and the 300’s lost a lot of steam now that its been out a while. The Sebring just should have never been! The Pacifica is nice, the 4.0 feels great. Town and Country is the something as the Caravan pretty much inside and out. Chrysler needs to separate its designs from Dodge. Why would I spend more money on a Chrysler if I could get a Dodge that looks similar with all the same options at a better price? And it’s usually easy to shop both brands being that their normally sold at a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealership. I think they need to move the Chrysler a bit more upscale, something like an Acura and keep Dodge around Chevrolet’s level that way you can justify a price difference, than MB clearly takes the premium market. And for god’s sake kill that fugly ass Compass, way to dilute the Jeep brand name!

If MB hadn’t stepped in back in ‘98, I doubt there’d be a Chrysler around in this climate. Remember they were bleeding red in ‘98….
Jeep maybe would have survived under independent ownership (or picked over by someone like Honda or such….)
Chrysler really has nothing to offer….the 300 was their only reason to live, and that has now spoiled in the sun. I rented a PT Cruiser, was very impressed (especially at the room and price point), but it’s old news. The Sebring is hideous, and I’m not sure the re-sculpturing of the minivans to blockier shapes is going to improve their reputation (nee Uplander/Terrazza/Montana).
The shake-down over the next 12-18 months for the domestics is not going to be pretty, folks. It’s sad, too, because they are finally bringing to market competitive product. But a whole generation plus (like myself) has written them off due to their past behavior. Give them another chance? Why? Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda et al won our hearts….it’s going to take a miracle to win them back.
Sorry, and sad.

TomF, its actually a Chevy Trailblazer running around in Saab cladding, which is even worse, considering that the Trailblazer is far worse than the Tahoe, but you’re right about that
