Future Ford vehicles will find cheapest gas on the block

01/04/2008, 11:57 AM

By Drew Johnson

Ford has announced that its future vehicles will be available with Sirius Travel Link. The new system — which will work with the car’s satellite navigation — will be able to provide drivers with traffic updates, movie listings and even gas prices — allowing the user to compare prices of nearby stations.

The technology will debut in the 2009 Ford Flex and F-150, but will eventually spread to other models.

The 2009 Ford Flex and F-150 will also be the first vehicles in North America to feature an audio system by Sony Electronics. Ford will make Sony the exclusive supplier of its in-car audio systems in the coming years.

I like how Ford just assumes everyone will drop money to invest in purchasing the equipment for this network.

Haha this is great. Instead of Ford having to invest heavily on more fuel efficient vehicles, they can just invest on developing a technology that will show drivers where to find the cheapest gas and thus save them money right?

Real-time traffic is out there, but who’s providing movie and gas prices. The draw of this technology will depend on the amount of info. available. How useful will the system be if it only displays gas prices for participating Shell stations?

that way, you can waste all that gas to find a station where you’ll pay 5cents less. I agree with the idea of selling cars based on their electronics. If I want that fancy ****, I’ll put it in myself.

I find it amusing when I read the posts on this site about ford. They could come out with a vehicle that gets 100mpg, generates 500hp and tows 25000lbs and you people would still think they are a pos. have any of you even driven a new ford in the last ten years or are you basing these comments on the 89 tempo that you drove in high school? I’m not saying that ford makes nothing but great decisions. We all know thats not true. But they are working to improve the technology in their vehicles and before they even hit the street the people here are dismissing them as failures.

Oh by the way I remember when everyone here laughed at SYNC and look at how many good reviews that is getting now

That is the answer to $100/barrel oil and public demand at this point to be more fuel efficient. I would love to find out the source of their smokes.

Gimmicks after gimmicks. Ford will do anything to entice buyers except design and build a respectable decent car.

They might as well offer to subsidize the gas of Ford owners. It’s easier to do that then cough up the millions in R&D to get this stupid GPS/Gas Station bull**** off the ground.

This is a good thing, I don’t know why you guys are such hypocrites about Ford. I see though that once someone (crash1433) brings up a good point, you all change your opinions. I find it funny how all of you are so eager to agree with someone and you contradict every other post.

Like I said, this is a good thing, but I wish they’d stop pissing around the bush and go straight for the problem: fuel economy. Really what I see they need to do, get their SUV lineup in shape, redesign the Taurus as a real competitor (it’s good, but not enough people recognize it as that) and great mileage, smaller than the current one, and you’d already be one step closer to that 35 mpg mandate. Right now, I see GM making the evident changes, Ford is a little slower at them but is making some great products, with the rest being lackluster, and Chrysler… well, I’ll put it lightly and say their in the ****s.

Or……you could just make vehicles that run on something other than gas and the system helps you find it (ex: vehicles running on ethanol and the system tells you where the nearest ethanol station is)

It isn’t costing Ford anything to implement this feature…its part of the Sirius system that subscribers pay for. This story is just designed to bring out the anti-Ford crowd here. Its more “only Ford” news that bugs alot of people here on this forum. There are people out there that buy vehicles that have unique features like Onstar, and that is the big reason they buy GM vehicles, not that they are the best car out there. Ford is chipping away at “only Ford” options to separate themselves from the pack….whats so wrong with that?

Here’s an idea Ford why not engineer it to find the nearest fast food restaurant for all the fat bastards that will be driving one and also the nearest gas station as fuel economy will be a pathetic joke and the nearest garage as it will break down everyday

What a stupid gimmick. Does Ford think this will make up for the decades of building bad cars? What Ford should install is a system that tells you where the nearest mechanic is!

OK… in any city what is the greatest price differential for a gallon of gas, 10 cents maybe? Multiply that by 18 for the average tank size. All that to potentially save $1.80…what an absolute joke.

Kind of smart.

Brendino: “little bits of innovation will all add up.â€
Yeah, I figure that much as well. Long as all the stuff WORKS!

crash1433: “They could come out with a vehicle that gets 100mpg, generates 500hp and tows 25000lbs and you people would still think they are a pos.â€
And by the Way, I owned a Tempo after a Civic, and considered it a huge step up.

jayjc08: The new Taurus is a loser, not because of its quality, but because it just screams “government.†It’s a housing-authority type car.

Comment by rodeo40: when you break it down, it does seem foolish.
