Infiniti engineers have done a good job hiding the upcoming EX small crossover from spy photographers, but one vacationer in California was able to snap a photo of a camouflaged car. It might be buried under a lot of tight-fitting camo, but we can very clearly see that the EX follows the concept that Infiniti showed in March.
Under the hood is more than likely the new 3.7 liter V6 from the G37 coupe, as well as all wheel drive and a lane-departure system. It looks like Infiniti was testing its new “Around View Mirror” system, which includes front, side and rear-mounted cameras.
It looks like Infiniti’s engineers are benchmarking the Porsche Cayenne, a vehicle that’s really more comparable to the larger FX.

WHy must Infiniti insist on making the cargo area useless with the sloping backend. I would’ve bought a FX if the it could’ve handled something bigger than a ****er Spaniel.

Why are companies calling these crossovers? They are the SUV of today. We really have enough of these SUV’s. Automakers, how about making some cars now.

Generally the same front fascia as your smallest sedan raised up a few inches does not a crossover make. Why not make a G35 wagon, which probably would have the same ground clearance.

This is basically a G35 SUV. Im sure that wagons dont sell as well as CUV’s or SUV’s’. Im sure that the Bavarians sell more X3’s than 3 series wagons Same with Benz and the E class & ML. I do like this and would consider buying one if the price is right. The only thing is the room Im sure you cant use it to haul things. On the bright side they didnt stick a 4 cylinder turbo under the hood

I hope its cheaper than the FX and does not phase it out. The FX is still one of my favorite Infiniti offerings, and its bold, mean styling is what makes it the success it is. The EX doesnt look tough enough.

Obviously my screen name gives away my love for the FX. I owned an 2005 FX35 and have to agree with some of the above comments. It’s exhaust note is loud, and should be part of the Sport package, the cargo area is suitable for nothing taller than grocery bags, and the gas mileage was awful. Aside from that, it was great fun, a fantastic vlaue (especially if you lease), and looks like nothing else out there on the road (especially with Nissan toning down the looks of the new Murano). This new EX looks great, and heopfully will be another sleeper hit like the FX and M cars.

From what I’ve read on a few other sites, current FX owners complained that the V6 and V8 models did not have enough visual distinction (among other things). So I believe that the EX will be the V6 based models and the next FX will be the V8. The FX will probably also grow to include a 3rd row to compete with the new X5 and other SUV / crossovers that will be getting 3rd row.
Re: Cargo Space
The FX actually has almost double the cargo space than the old model BMW X5. Only 2 cubic feel less than the Benz ML350 (seats up) and 10 less seats down. I was able to fit a 32″ x 60″ x 18″ bathtub in the back of our FX45 to bring home from the store.
Re: Exhaust Noise
The FX45 (V8) is actually a lot quieter than the FX35. With the windows up, you can hardly hear it except when getting on the gas. The V8 has a deeper sound than the V6.

Re: Cayenne
The FX45 outperforms the Cayenne S in almost all performance figures (excluding offroad ability) yet costs around 20% less.
The EX will cost even less than the FX and will probably outperform it due to weight savings and the new 3.5L VQ engine.
Of course the Cayenne has a nicer quality feeling interior, but the reliability history has been horrible in comparison to most Infiniti models. Plus maintenance on Porsche is very expensive.

Tummy, I was referring to the cargo space with the back seats in place. The load floor is large, but the sloping roof cuts out taller boxes. Drop those seats, and you’re right about the huge amount of space! Also, interesting about the V8 exhaust note.

MikeFX: The cargo area with the back seats in place, is still nearly twice as large as the (previous gen) BMW X5 with the back seats in place. FX: 27.4, BMW 16.1 cubic feet. I was surprised when I found that out. I also note that the Porsche Cayenne holds only 19.1 cubic feet with the seats up, or 62.5 cubic feet with seats down (FX 64.5 cubic feet seats down).
Overall I think the FX compares favorably to the competition. As I said before, we were able to fit a bathtub in there for our recent remodel. With box and foam packing it was around 22″ tall, that maxed out the height. We actually didn’t need to clear the hatch, but the rear of the roof was a bit low.
We’ve never had problems hauling normal things from the store in the FX, but the X5 does have a taller, but narrower cargo area behind the seats. The hatch on the X5 does also slope inward, cutting into the space, but to a lesser degree than the FX.
One thing to note is that the preproduction model we saw at the NY autoshow had an interior volume nearly the same as the FX, while the exterior is much smaller. The cargo hatch is much less sloped, so the look is a bit deceptive.
I guess if you need to haul big things people should probably look at full size SUVs like the QX56, Q7, Navigator, LX470, or perhaps Escalade. Since we live in NYC, something that huge wouldn’t work very well.

On the nissannews site, the EX35 is scheduled to go on sale Dec 2007. So its probably going to have the 3.5 L from the g sedan.

Is the EX exterior really that much smaller? It looks almost the same size as the current FX, which makes me think the next one will be forced to join the 7-seater ranks (which doesn’t bode well for the design of the next one). I also agree that the next FX will probably be V8 only to make room for the EX35/37.
