G8 to get Solstice-like styling?

01/15/2007, 10:31 AM

By admin

There’s no question Pontiac will unveil a new sedan at the Chicago Auto Show based on the new Holden Commodore. GM’s product boss Bob Lutz has even confirmed it will be named G8. However, there have been conflicting reports over the car’s styling.

According to a new report by trade publication Automotive News, the G8 will get front end styling similar to the popular Solstice roadster. The car will have unique styling from the A-pillar forward, the report said.

The report indicates the difference between the Commodore and G8 will be more dramatic than suggested by a popular illustration on the cover of Motor Trend’s October issue.

Today’s report also goes against a Detroit Free Press story that claimed the G8 would first get a Pontiac grille only, and later get unique styling when production is moved to Canada.

lets wait and see. GM has made Pontiac a mockery for the better part of the last 30 years… why should they change the formula now? Budget rent a car will buy plenty of ugly gm cars without you or me. It also seems that Pontiac is lost in the doldrums of product development and stiffled by division confusion. They really need to make this work without the cartoon-like designs from their last 20 years.

this is going to be bad…the Commodore is a very squared off car…the Solstice is rounded…its going to look very akward…just bring it over, put a pointac badge on it and let it be! its not a bad looking car, a little boring, but 10x better then what they have out now.

I’ll reserve judgment until I see what they do with the G8. If they put a smooth Solstice front on the car with hard edge design on the other 2/3rds it’ll be horrible. Remember…they did produce the Aztec…so I DO WORRY!

The primary design of the Solstice is retro in feel….old Jags for example…why would they make a modern car look classic?

Again, I’ll reserve judgment until I see it at the Chicago Auto Show.

Pontiac really needs to redefine the front ends of its cars. That same old split grille has been around for too long and it seems to make all of their new cars look dated. Come on, Pontiac. Be creative and come up with something new and innovative for a change.

This report sounds like idle speculation. The decision to sell the Commodore in North America as the Pontiac G8 was made just a couple of months ago and was originally intended to be announced in Detroit last week. The announcement has been pushed back one month, but that is simply not enough time to make any significant changes to the design. A significant change to the grille has major implications for vehicle cooling and safety. These issues cannot be resolved in one or two months.

Furthermore, you can’t just redo the grille as is implied by this report. The Solstice and Commodore have somewhat different design languages. A change to the grille design will propagate changes in the design from the front bumper to the rear bumper. Otherwise, you get a Ford 500 with a 3-bar grille.

There is also the issue of tools and dies. As significant change in the design will require new and unique tools and dies to handle the G8 run. However, the run is supposed to be limited to 25-30,000 vehicles/yr. It doesn’t make economic sense.

To the extent that the report of a Solstice-like G8 grille is accurate, it depends on your definition of Solstice-like. The average observer will need the differences pointed out to him.

I agree with you YourNameHere. Its a very angular car, a round front end would clash too much, I hope this is more in line with their two year down the road remake for the G8. Regardless of what they do, I’m excited that Pontiac is getting a large RWD V8 car back in their line up. I’m tired of all the FWD stuff.

Yea yea it may not look that bad but how many of us really buy a product that just looks good but performs like ****? The Solstice is a turd w/ a bowtie wrapped around it. You can dress is up all you want but when it comes down to it. Its still a turd. And im talking about the engineering, fit and finish, and building material quality. They cut corners like Martha Stewart making a stock swap, just to get it to market at its MSRP. Perhaps they just cant afford to make a true drivers car. And perhaps thats not a bad thing. Not everyone can afford a SRT4, or a honda S2000

I like what Holden has to offer, and would prefer it in the States as a Holden model versus being morphed into a Pontiac. Lutz has been going around the world parting together cars from elsewhere to be US models—GM must be getting desperate.

Yecchh. Does not sould like a good combo. They should leave the poor Commodore alone and just switch out the badges. At least the Aussies have the good taste to design something that doesn’t look like a warmed over cat turd.

LOl – GM#1blah gives Lutz kudos for copying the format of Honda and BMW.
Anyway the G8 should still look good with the honeycomb grill. And you wil;l be able to recognize it as a Pontiac immediately. I say let Pontiac build up their brand image. Maybe eventually they can be considered for cross shopping with BMW’s as they want to be now.

yeah really here we go with them using success until the well runs dry. The “solstice face” cant be a trademark across the brand like the kidney grilles for bmw (or pontiac themselves), or the three-bar bull**** from ford. If everything looks like a solstice on a stretched wheelbase it wont be that great. Not to mention the best part of the solstice is the tall rear end. They better integrate a front license plate better.

Maybe so, but its a crapbox that outsold the MX-5.

As for the “G8″, I hope they make revisions behind the a-pillar to put the aft-end styling more in line with the solstice like nose they may put on it.

I’m glad GM finally decided to import more Holdens, The GTO was a fantastic driving vehicle, but was slain by its dull shape.

I’ve thought for years they should bring the Holden Ute/Crewman SS to US shores as a Chevrolet El Camino/El Camino SS.

i would really, REALLY like to think the head honchos at GM will not have head-in-rectum-itis to the point that they would ignore all the opinion obviously out in the ether as to what the potential commodore’s customers would like to see in its styling over some misguided attempt to make everything look alike. when every buick looks exactly alike and if you took the badge off you couldn’t tell them from a g6, steroided cobalt, or castrated impala you have a problem. They should share features for sure, the biggest one being the BADGE, which is SUPPOSED to tell you what brand it is. the styling of the vehicle itself should be solely reflective OF THE VEHICLE, not the brand… “oh, thats a pontiac” is not nearly as effective as “OH, thats the new g8″

With successful entrys like the Solstice, G6, GrandPrixGXP and Torent, there is no reason Pontiac shouldn’t go forth with applying the language to new models like the G8. Besides, people are going to buy Pontiacs for their superior BMW trashing performance, their comfort and build quality prowess, not how they look. Pontiacs have always looked sporty and powerful, you guys who are knocking this story don’t realize that Pontiac will continue to be successful despite your comments.

The Holden looks like the big brother of my friend’s Mazda protégé. If they want sales they need flashy styling. They should use mid sixties Bonneville’s Catalina’s and GTOs as inspiration.

Pontiac has’nt been too sucessful, in fact, it was only a year ago that pontiac (along with buick) was on the chopping block.

Also, BMW crushes Pontic. Not vice-versa.

Nah…I could save myself the trouble and just take the $23K or so, for stcker price, withdraw it from the bank in one dollar bills. Then, pile all those dollars up in my driveway and set fire to them.

As for pontiacs thrashing BMW’s thats not too far off, i have a G6 GTP Coupe and have been spanking my fiance’s 3-series all day long…so much for spending 35 grand on her car when mine was only 24 grand after my Gms discount…i guess maybe i should have let her drive my car before we went and picked up her overpriced bimmer…
