just watch oil futures on the commodities board every time Bush gives a speech about foreign policy, iraq, etc.

People who attack Bush for every little thing annoy me, it’s not always his fault, but he’s an easy scapegoat for angry liberals who didn’t come out and vote in the last election. I’m going to wager there are more liberals then conservatives in America, and when a Republican beats a Democrat, that just shows the lack of voting on the Dems part. Bush has provided more funds to the Alternative Energy Research center in Colorado than any other administration in US history. That doesn’t let him off the hook, but a fact is a fact.

New Refineries haven’t been built because the oil companies hasn’t been investing in Refineries – even the existing ones. The beauty of being a republican is there is always someone else to blame tho’ so if you want to blame Democrats for that go ahead.

Energy Independence requires
1. conservation – “waste not want not” is something every true conservative should be able to get behind.
2. new technolgies – not gonna happen overnight but there are lots of interesting things happening – American has the most innovative engineers and scientists in the world (unfortunately most of them are liberals but oh well)
3. making people pay the true cost of energy at the pump – that includes the cost of the gulf wars.

I am all for Nuclear Power if politicans address the issue of what to do with the waste and if they are built without being subsidised.

Personally, I don’t think we are anywhere near an ability to move away from gasoline. And first off, 65% of a barrel of oil is used for plastics. Only 35% is used for various fuel types. So this whole discussion comes about because of how much it costs us. At this point, alternative fuels cost more than gasoline. That is why there is nothing out there as of yet. In order to bring a gallon of ethanol to market, it takes roughly 90% of the energy stored within that gallon of ethanol. That’s only a 10% efficiency versus the 70% gasoline offers. Ethanol refining does not offer enough energy to be worthwhile at this point. I am more interested in technology like the guy who was featured here on LLN. The man who developed an engine with an extra cycle to include steam power. Efficient as all hell!

My suggestion to everyone, actually, Jim in La’s and my suggestion to everyone, is to vote for politicians that will allow this country to drill our own, and create our own energy. New drilling, new refinieries, and new nuclear power plants.

The idea of energy independence is really an implausibility in today’s reality. Supply and demand rules the economy, regardless how anyone feels about it. The problem is, oil has become such a staple in this country that it is almost as important as clean water. If we were to not have gasoline or deisal for a week, our economy would collapse. Our infrastructure would collapse. How much is it worth to everyone to prevent that from happening? There is no limit, we will pay whatever it takes. When you think of the catostrophic certainty this nation would be in without oil, it’s worth going to war for in order to secure or safety.

Now “Jim in LA” has mentioned energy independence, and to not vote for the political party (assuming republicans) that’s tied to oil. I ask everyone who agrees with that statement, how will the democrats achieve energy independance? This is a paradox, of wanting it both ways. Energy independence means drilling for our own oil, in the ANWR, in the Gulf Of Mexico, in Wyoming. All of these areas have been cut off due to Democrats in the name of environmentalism. We cannot build new nuclear facilities because of environmentalism. We cannot build new refineries because of environmentalism. We can’t have it both ways. So we push electric cars, where is the electricity going to come from? We all know how much it costs to run a refridgerator, how much do you think a CAR is? No nuclear power, no cheap electricity.

Don’t get me wrong, I think the oil industry is the most corrupt in the world. But it’s only allowed due to supply, and our insatiable demand.

1. drill ANWR. in fact, drill EVERYWHERE. and i’m fairly pro-environment – but i’m also anti-great depressions and foreign dependency.

2. alternative fuels and energy. biofuels (B20 for diesels and E85 for fleet vehicles first, then the passenger fleet later).

3. wind/solar where practical to power stuff that shouldn’t be on the grid in the first place. particularly in rural / desert locations.

all sounds rather hippie, i know, but the truth is, those losers have it right – just a case of bad messengers, right message. if we’d have focused on altfuels for the last 10 years and alt energy sources, we’d have MUCH lower overall energy costs, more competition, and less control by a handful of huge multinational corporations.

but then, considering how our “government” works, that wasn’t likely to happen, now was it?

the good news is, people are waking up from their slumber and their Fear Of Scary Brown People Flying Airplanes Into Buildings and are starting to pay attention to what is happening.

our way back to a republic is through a sustained energy independence program, whether from the public or private sector. ain’t gonna happen in the public sector for the next 2 years at least, but the private sector is moving well ahead with it even as we speak.

The dip in gas prices is fabricated…the republicans need all the help they can get to stay in power. other wise the Democrats win and things will look very diff very quickly. Nothing has changed in the world…”risk of supply disprution” is a load of shit. Tell me whats diff this month then in the last 12? Wait until prices go back up after january…things are going to be real bad. These low prices are going to give ppl a false sence of security. then back to +$3.00/gal…

I thought it might have been Iran but Dubya will probably listen to the puppet masters and do nothing until after the elections.

This time the GOP is really on the ropes for November. I was watching the news, and the said that Ohio has some very hotly contested GOP seats, so I went to (city)gasprices.com and looked up Ohio. What a surprise? Over the past 2 months the gas prices in Ohio have dropped far far faster than the nation as a whole. Now who’d have guessed that?

I’m no partisan, and I voted Bush and still prefer him to the alternatives at that time, but this tie to Big Oil is so obvious it’s a joke.

oh and renton is right – we’ll never see $2.00/gallon gas again, because just like we have a “new normal” after 9/11 (LA Times), we now have a “new normal” in energy pricing.
