Thing2, thank you for your comment. I like to stroll into these comment boards once in a while and dispense reality.

As for 33, you can argue how many Veyrons there are, and that is a valid point. Thing2 cited the Veyron as a prime example, albeit a hyperbole. But this doesn't negate the fact that sports cars on the website get praise and applause for their gluttony, while SUVs get shit for the exact same thing; fuel consumption.

The real problem with SUV's is their weight; their danger to people on the road. It would seem they have become the 'safe' car for many people, and I think a lot of terrible drivers buy them because they think that since the SUV is Big, Big=Safety. This is obviously not the case as we can see in the Ford F-150 from the late 90's. Although I am using a hyperbole here similar to the Veyron one, I dislike the idea of parents buying their kids larger than necessary cars so that if the kid gets in a crash they will survive...while probably killing the other person with their lack of responsibility.

What it boils down to is simple, on a sports car website, the sports car can do no wrong, and at 12city/18highway, that is acceptable. But when a tactile SUV does the same...it is shunned.

Jon, where do I say that I think the Veyron is a problem? I was just pointing out yet another example for Sean's point. SUVs at least can be of some utility, while a sports car realy never does get driven for what its meant, recreation at best, but breaking the law most of the time. Yet, we have a love affair with sports car and for that, they get immunity from the criticism. Telling one group they can't have what they want isn't the way to go. We need to overhaul how the oil companies do business and where those taxes do end. I dont' mind paying tax on my gas if its going directly towards research into new and better ways for energy so that there's new competition and consumers can win.

Thing2,

How many Veyron’s do they make a year? And out of that number how many owners run their cars anywhere near top speed?

The same thing can be said regarding MB’s high-end AMG models (CL/ S / SL 63 / 65’s, etc…), how many how many are made per year and how many are run anywhere near top speed?

Now, how many SUV owners are out there that have an SUV with 5 liter or larger engines? It’s a lot more than all AMG, Veyron, BMW M5 / M6 / 7-Series cars combined.

SUVs and the conspicuous consumers who drive them are helping to keep the price of gas zooming upward. Demand is driving the price of gas and those who guzzle it without regard are clearly the greedy ones pushing prices and putting more money ino the hands of terrorists.

E85 is not the answer and nothing more than a pipe dream concocted by Bush and the agricultural companies who donate money to him. Ethanol is not the fuel of the future for anyone except maybe a few of those living in the Midwest US.

The real answer is conservation and new technology - two concepts that are unfortunately completely rejected by the short sighted (or bribed) Bush Admin...

Have any of you condemning SUVs, or selling them in panic ever done the math?

10mpg...10kmi.@$3= $3,000/yr
30mpg...10kmi.@$3= $1,000/yr Saving $5.47/day

I don't know about you, but I sure can't account for every $5.47/day I spend..& if it keeps me in my SUV & Cobra..I could give a shite.

Ouch. This is going to hurt those folks with the Land Rovers, full size Fords and a Toyota trucks/SUV's big time. Sales are going to tank if this keeps up. Might be time to trade for a superior GM SUV!

I don't think those will be affected by rising gas prices at all since everyone wants them and the driving experience is worth the price. Go GM!!!

#4...I was paying 99 cents a gallon in Janaury 2002....my car at the time cost $30,000.

My question is, has the price per barrel also tripled since then?

I do not care what you drive. Simple fact is that Gas prices are not really changing what people are driving so while nobody wants to pay more for gas very few are willing to compromise what they drive for a savings.

how is people getting rid of their suv's going to help gas prices? The oil companies are going to rip you off as much as they can because all they care about is making money. I think e85 is going to be the way to go in the future because it doesn't take very much $ to convert a fuel station over to it. And the more people use it the less expensive it is going to be to produce. Plus the jobs it will create in the agricultural industry in this country will help the economy. If you get a hybrid you might get better gas mileage but your still at the mercy of the oil companies plus you paid 4000 dollars over the regular price of the car and now you have another costly repair if anything goes wrong with it. The e85 is better for your engine because it burns cleaner and also going to reduce emissions.

and i, being one of those americans that was told to stop whining, am looking out for #1 and #1 is me. i could care less if your paying the price of a new car to fill up the gas tank because it has absoloutley no concern to me. you BLIND europeans dont seem to understand that our economy isnt shaped around $6 per gallon gas like yours is, thus it is hurting us and our economy more than it is hurting you to pay that large amount of cash. so why dont you europeans quit telling us to keep our mouths shut when this issue is concerning the entire economy of our country. get all the facts before you make a stupid comment.

on a side note, i have no problem with european peoples, its just the assholes who think they are better than the people in country or continent for this reason, or think that they are more intelligent than the people in a certain country or continent. i mean, hell, if we are going to make blanket statements then i could say that every european is crazy and ill tempered because of the riots at their football(soccer) games. but i dont make blanket statements since im not an asshole. thanks, come again!

but dont forget, some countries such as england pay that much because the gov. puts a HUGE tax on it, so in essence they are paying about the same amount as we are for gas, then donating a butt load more cash to the gov.

wow, i didnt know we all could afford to be married with 2 kids, afford to have a pickup truck to haul stuff, and afford to have 2 seperate cars for daily driving. reality check, maybe half those people in the SUVs/pickup trucks are driving them but THEY DONT HAVE MUCH OF A CHOICE. is that a new concept, or are you just a snotty zit faced teen ager who was raised in a rich household? im pretty sure its answer #2. besides, if people can afford to have a big ol' pickup truck with MPG-dropping 28in rims, lowered to the point of scraping the ground, loads of 1in thick chrome steel everywhere, and a bed full of 16" subs, then they have a right to try to afford the gas for that vehicle. not only that but, a diesel pickup with a couple of mods(intake/exhaust/tuner) can get into the 20MPG range for gas mileage. and, yes, with mods(they actually optimizes and opens up the engine so it needs less fuel for more power). the US has enough oil stock piled to last 80+ years at the current consumption rate(pretty sure its 80+, thats not saying that in 85 years we would run out, they just stopped calculating at 80 and added the +, saw it on some show). not sure about you people, but i plan on making my self happy for the rest of my life. and that includes getting a nice paying job, and buying/modding a bunch of gas guzzling vehicles. a toyota prius sure as HELL isnt gonna make me happy, no matter how much i save at the pump(read an article that said you wont see those savings till about 6-8 years after buying the car since you paid so much for the POS hybrid in the first place). you only have one life, and he who dies with the most toys wins!

What worries me is that modern US was built around car culture. Very few people walk anywhere, so when a real oil crisis happens it's going to be a nightmare. On the other hand it might sort out the obesity problem!

Actually, I'm hoping that public transit gets better in my area... right now it's hard to get around without a car.

However, people are doing it.. my brother-in-law bikes to the bus stop, about two miles, every morning and takes the ride from there. Saves him money, at least.

Im a poor bastid, and my only working vehicle now is an 86 F150 that gets about 8 mph. Ive got a bud who drives his truck for "the look." I know plenty of people who drive something for "the look." That is stupid. If you need to tow something get a vehicle for towing. If you want the superleather chrome whachamacallit to slap on some 24s and show off, your not using your vehicle for what its ment for.

Im a avid sportbike rider, and the same goes in the SB world. If you throw on a lound exhaust and stunt all day long, your not using your bike for what its for, and it will show. Stunt bikes break down, fall apart, and so on. Sportbikes are for going fast around a track, not for holding a wheel in the air. This is much like that dubbed SUV. It was made for mild off road driving while you take a small boat to a lake or what not, not blasting the interstates with big rims and lound woofers.

And I havent seen gas under 3 bucks for months! Around here its been 3+ since winter.

Sean, you hit the nail on the head. On the previous article about the Veyron, everyone is goo goo ga ga over it, yet they never mention how the thing burns through a full tank of gas in 12 minutes on full throttle! 12 minutes! Forget miles per gallon, its minutes per gallon! Then again, the people buying that car will probably only drive it once and then lock it away.

I don't know about these "records." Wasn't it something like $6 a gallon in the Atlanta area because of Hurrican Katrina at one point, or was CNN wrong?

^^ Yeah... you're right. But there is something obnoxious about a crushingly large piece of metal rushing in behind you on the I-5 and you pray it brakes in time when everyone starts slowing down.

Funny how the people here criticize SUV drivers and yet on the same news page we have AMG Mercedes performance cars that are just as innefficient as SUVs. To be honest, if I had to criticize anyone, I would criticize sports car drivers more so than SUV drivers. At least an SUV is capable of towing a boat or hauling 7 people, these sports/sport luxury cars are capable of holding 2 or 4 comfortable. (Note that the sedans capable of holding 4 have the larger engines and greater luxury for the occupants, resulting in more fuel consumption.)

Honestly people, pull your heads out of your asses and realize that this website caters to those who like to read about cars. Reading about the Ford Taurus isn't fun because it is a bland, semi-efficient vehicle. You read this website to read about interesting cars, and is it any surprise that the interesting cars are fast/luxurious that get 10-20 MPG highway?

Sports cars get no flak on a perfomance car website while they are equally as innefficient or worse than SUVs, who are in open season all year round. The pot calling the kettle black, you should be ashamed.

We don't need to read about this every day. It's a new record every couple days, and we're getting tired of reading about it. Sure, gas was a dollar a gallon back in the day, but back then you could buy a new car for $5,000. Move on, people.
