Gas prices to fall to $1.15?

09/14/2006, 3:27 PM

By admin

The lone analyst that years ago predicted oil prices would soar to record levels now says they are poised for a dramatic plunge to late-1990s levels. Gas prices could fall as low as $1.15 a gallon, Philip K. Verleger told the McClatchy News Service. Gas prices have already dropped significantly in recent weeks, with more conservative estimates putting gas near $2 by Thanksgiving. But Verleger thinks prices could go even lower. With fighting easing in Nigeria, Israel, and Lebanon, the potential for a warm winter, and a lack of hurricane activity, oil and gas prices could drop in a big way, Verleger says.

The real question now for car mfg, would be if Ford and GM will stay the course by offering gas guzzling SUVs. And whether the other car mfg will continue to produce/develop gas-economy vehicles.

The bigger question would be if this prediction is true, will America still have the foresight and the patience to get itself off oil? If I consider how lazy my fat American friends are, the answer is obviouse: no.

Anyways, I doubt this prediction… ALOT. Let’s see what happens this summer.

I can honestly say, and have been to my very green very liberal friends, that the only way to get Americans off of the gasoline spigot is to charge an enormous amount for the fuel. People in Europe drive small cars b/c they pay ~$8/gallon for gas and are taxed on displacement (thus a lot of turbos instead of V6’s/V8’s).

For the last 12 months, people have complained about gas prices, they haven’t complained about gas consumption. There is a gas guzzler tax but that never stopped anyone… the only way to curb consumption is to raise prices and then the right v. left discussions won’t take place.

From a right wing perspective, this may be equally damning news as they support ANWR exploration and coastal Florida exploration. At

Wow. Yeah, all bush’s fault. Of course. It’d probably be his fault if Gore got elected, or worse, if Kerry did.

Gas will never be $1.15 because all the liberals are pushing for minimum wage increases. And if the average wage increases, guess what? We get a little something called inflation. So the price in relation might drop, but inflation is going to kill us if the idiot liberals get their way.

I for one am hoping that it does not take years for the Iranians to develop nuclear weapons. One large thermonuclear detonation in New Yuck would solve the problem of speculators driving the cost of energy through the roof and wipe out a good portion of the leftofascists in the country with one shot. Unfortunately it appears most of them are posting on this site. Wow, you folks have foul mouths.

I always get a kick out of comments like Toy Yodas, to read his comment you would think that GM and Ford are the only company’s that make big trucks. I’m sure GM and Ford will stop producing fullsize Trucks and SUV’s as soon as Toyota does. Or in other words, it’s never going to happen. And by the way, GM’s fullsizers get better fuel economy than those produced by Toyota.

As far as gas prices I think it’s great news, they have been artificialy high for way to long.

The american budget deficit is depriving your ability to act, and when it comes to oilprizing there’s only one determinant: It’s a market decision. So don’t blame the chinese, they only own the USA ( take a look in the vaults of the National Bank of China ).

Try and figure out what the real prize of one barrel of crude oil is…Production costs, invading Iraq, paying of Israel, paying of Venezuela, transportation, pollution and who knows what. Instead of mindlessly talking gazprizes all the time, you should worry about consumption, emissions and, basically, our future.

Go GM! Your gas guzzling SUV’s are the tops for me and my wallet.

I don’t think this is realistic. Inflation alone (with rates now going up after the analysts were all convinced that the early millenial recession finally petered out – which i still have doubts about) would cause the price to be higher than $1.15. I haven’t seen that since 1992. Hell, I can’t even get sodas for $1.15 in some places, and that’s for a liter or 20oz, not a gallon. And you betcha if I could have put root beer in my car for cheaper I would have :)

Note that countries in the middle east are not the only members of OPEC, one of the largest cartels out there, if not the largest. Venezuela is one of the major countries, even though it is nowhere near the Middle east, and lots of problems there a little while ago drove prices up. Actually, a lot of things will drive prices up; this includes events suchs as cartels simply wanting to charge more, wars (I seriously doubt that Lebanon, Nigeria and other places will stop fighting even if it slows down) and other economic factors as well as the logistics of bringing the oil to the correct market – I usually mean American when I say that because we are the largest consumers of oil in the world. Not sure if it’s aggregate or per capita, but the largest nonetheless. Pipeline breaks or malfunctions, we have high gas prices. And note that I think oil as a commodity is measured and priced by the barrel, which I think is 42 gallons. At least that’s what wikipedia.org says.

China, on the other hand, is starting to consume more oil at an accelerating rate as they grow with little to no regulation. I don’t think it’s as large of a problem as the US right now; however, since they are such a large country (China is #3 in geographical area ahead of US at #4) they have plenty of oil deposits. I wouldn’t be surprised if pumping and refining tech in China expands in the near future to produce more petroleum.

Before I get of this crude soapbox, it’s a basic economic principle. price is directly proportional to the ratio between supply and demand. More demand + same supply = higher price. World’s growing, not shrinking. Developing countries are turning into industrialized ones. Plus, oil is used to make plastics, and do other things aside from engine fuel. Demand’s just going to get higher unless we start building plastic stuff out of sand :P Or maybe soybeans or something, I don’t know.

Ok, here’s the deal…It’s complicated but yet has roots in very simple economics. Oil, based upon the recent well found at 5 miles deep in the gulf, is not dinasaurs and prehistoric palm trees that degraded and turned into slime we can burn. Oil is the chemical expression of the earths combination of elements, heat and pressure. Once created in the earth, it is pushed out to the surface by pressure…as it is created, it finds the path of least resistance and moves to lower resistance, the surface being the lowest resistance. Places that allow for surficial expression of this substance are almost all we know about today. However, there are many, many places that do not allow for direct access to the surface because of bedrock, aquifers or other factors. Therefore, the liklihood that oil is in substantial quantities at depths never thought before is very, very likely, and the recent find is proof of that. As we find more and more oil at depths never before analyzed, the more the pressure will be for the price to drop, because up until now, oil was considered to be a nasty non-renewable resource that had reached or was at peak use and it was all down hill from here. Well, come to find out that the entire view of oil has been completely wrong. As we begin to understand exactly what oil is, how it is made and where it exists and is in greatest abundance and reccurrance, we will also begin to shift resources to what makes sense with that view…total geopolitical shift from today. Great implications. My calculations would suggest that supporting the price of 15 dollars a barrell may be difficult in a few years as more massive finds come online and the shift in geopolitical strategies takes place. At that price, fuel made from oil will be very, very cheap. Sub 1 dollar a gallon for gasoline and diesel and similar pricing reduction for heating oil, avgas, natural gas, propane, etc… Oil has all of a sudden become the best renewable resource for energy we have on the planet, and it will be in abundance for a very, very long time!!!

davidg1977, instead of raising gas prices it would be simpler to increase the purchase tax of the vehicles based on engine size for the same type. For example, a 2.0 liter BMW 3 series costs $40K while the 330i costs $70K. That’s the strategy they use where I’m at and believe me, it works wonders.

I would just like to mention America gets most all of its oil from CANADA or locally, NOT the middle east. Its because of the speculation market that the price of oil spikes like that, and its because of greed and complacency GAS gets so expensive.

And America, were it to completely forget about environemtal impact, has the ability to produce more than enough oil to sustain itself. And if Gas got up to 80-100 dollars a barrel even the small wildcatters could produce at a profit and that woudl bring in tons of oil from fields we no longer even count towards our total.

Oil will be a big problem in 50-100 years, IF we let it.

Oil is never going to be a problem, it is created by the earth continuously, the only problem that exists is our willingness to drill for it, surface oil is just the tip of the iceberg.
