North American gas prices continue to climb, this time as a result of Hurricane Rita. Oil companies said Monday that damage to their massive Texas refineries from the storm appeared lighter than expected, but analysts are still predicting that gasoline prices may remain near $3 a gallon for weeks or even months longer. “We still have the carryover of the impact from Katrina, and even though we didn’t sustain as much damage with Rita, it’s cumulative,” he said. President Bush called on Americans today to conserve gasoline and avoid non-essential driving as the average national prices for retail gasoline climbed higher for the first time since they peaked over the Labor Day weekend.
