Geely looking for foreign partner

10/26/2007, 4:32 PM

By Drew Johnson

Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. — a Chinese automaker — has announced that it is looking to partner with a foreign car and parts maker, including Japanese ones. Geely is looking to expand in order to take advantage of growth opportunity outside of its domestic market.

“We started off building and selling cheap cars, but now we are changing,” said Geely chairman, Li Shufu. “We are very, very eager to form alliances.”

According to Automotive News, Geely is one of China’s few privately run automakers and is planning to double capacity by next year. In addition, Geely also has plans to build production facilities in North America and Europe in order to expand beyond its home market. “We have great respect for Japanese automakers and want to cooperate with them,” Li said. Geely hasn’t ruled out a partnership with other countries’ manufacturers.

Geely will be one of five Chinese automaker to attend January’s Detroit Auto Show.

That car in the article image has kind of a Mazda-rip-off look to it.

They should partner up with British Leyland, or Oldsmobile, or Plymouth, or Montgomery Wards.

Yes. Now you are copying and selling cheap cars, Li Shufu. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Well…

Looks like dog xxxx to me!

I find it so shaming when they come out and admit they were producing cheap cars. Get your asses out of the business! I wish cars would become something else than an enterprise, as they have been for the past 40 years. I’d love to see GM, Chrysler or Ford, or even a NEW American automanufacturer come up with some amazing products to go mainstream. The problem is, mainstream IS an enterprise…

CA36GTP,

DMC is not out of business anymore… It is however a new company under that name and yes they do make DMC-12s (THE Delorean). Hopefully they will make a totally new one but that’s not the subject.

Hey Geely is just following Hyundai’s footsteps 20 years later. Hyundai had help from foreign partners back then too.

To the first comment – every Chinese car has a rip-off look because none of them are original designs (and if they original, they look like ****).

Veda- read the rest of my comment.

///m- It actually could be very possible, most likely with Toyota. The two candidates I see is Chrysler, as they’re looking to build a lowcost car despite the fact their with Cherry, and Toyota who is also looking to produce a low cost car, and looking to expand their market.

You know what LLN? You’re doing a disservice to yourselves as well as idiots who post nonsense here by deleting my posts, entirely or partially.

1. You are allowing ignorance to litter this site, as exemplified by the first post above.

2. You are allowing continued ignorance to litter this site indefinitely by not steering these people to realize their errors and either think before they post or not post rubbish at all.

But I understand communism saves the barrel-bottom scrapings.
