Geely scraps U.S. budget car plan

07/17/2006, 9:14 AM

By admin

Chinese automaker Geely has scrapped its plan to adapt its current line of budget automobiles for the U.S. market. The company will instead develop an all-new car specifically for the United States and Europe, reports Automotive News. Previously, the Geely CK was expected to arrive in the United States in late 2008 for $10,000. Now, everything is “in limbo,” according to John Harmer, former COO. Li Shufu, chairman of Geely, is currently seeking funding to build a $400 million plant in America. No further details on the company’s future plans were given. In December, we reported that Malcolm Bricklin had changed his plans for importing Chinese cars to the U.S. He decided to sell upscale cars in the $20,000 to $30,000 range, rather than aiming for the $10,000 or less market.

Well that settles that. Maybe Geely and Bricklin both read the boards here at LLN and decided to bail.

#1 sounds like the Italian pizza delivery boy who rode around on the moped in the movie “Can’t Buy Me Love”.

I dont think you can ban a car based on its price. This car wont be a threat to any top major car manufactuer. I think these cars are built to compete against hyundai and suzuki. Some people want a cheaper car.

Costs in CHina are rising faster than even the Chinese predicted. They are going to end up with Japanese priced automobiles without the heritage.

Looks like a Mercedes C class, best bang for the buck! Mercedes is crap anyway, so why not pay less to to get the same crap. Too bad this project won’t go through, I was thinking about picking up a couple of these babies. Geely… sounds almost as ****ty as kia, or pontiac

Um… gee… so instead of getting to see what they sell for the Chinese market, they’ll now make full size Accord knock off that has nothing distinctive about it at all.

If they make anything to compete with, how about a car that is a better value than a Honda Fit or Toyota Prius?

the reason geely not selling cheap cars, cause i tthink it can be like kia and hyundai, only problem take longer to establish itself
