Agreed mblommel, the perfect strategy would be to ruin the myth with actually making a car that looks good with good warranty. It doesn’t have to be rattle free and perfect but if emotion goes and the manufacturer would back up its product on paper, it may be a success story.

im sick of all these people dissing gm ya every car company has cars that are good and bad!! to me with all the past cars i owened id have to go with gm in quality performance except for my saturn vue ausome engine and trans and evan good awd system but shitty exterror and interror but i have checked out the knew ones and they have really upgrated sence mine!! so nowadays go with gm for quality!! my opinion!

Great move GM! When I heard this story on the radio I did something I had not done it a VERY long time: I plausibly considered buying a GM product.

IMO they need to follow Hyundai’s approach when you are branded as unreliable: make a darn good car, give it a great warranty and sell it cheap. What GM can also do is make the car look cool too. Add all those factors together and GM market share would finally start moving in the other direction.

because GM trucks are as good as you saying, Ford F-series trucks still #1 selling trucks!
And even Ford Fusion with 4-cyl. has FIVE-speed automatic (6-speed with V6) and your “class leading” Impala has only FOUR-speed, no matter V6 or V8. Same as Buick LaCrosse/Alurre and Pontiac G6. I have a customer who has a ’63 ‘vette and had Grand Am as a company car (engine clapped out at 50,000 miles). That company car he cared for better then some people care about car they own. Now he got a G6 V6. He said it’s his last GM vehicle. Paint job is so shitty (gets scratched for no reason), that he said if it wouldn’t have been his company car he would drive it through dealers window.

Some of you guys are some real morons! I guess my 02 Duramax with over 80,000 trouble free miles hasn’t got the message that it’s supposed to suck. My previous 5 GM trucks didn’t get the message either. Just becuase an import loving magazine may suggest otherwise doesn’t make it true. If GM sucks so bad how did they take 2 of the top 5 spots on the most recent JD power study? Wake up people, whether you like it or not GM is starting to turn the ship. Keep up the good work, the extended warranty is a good move.

“chuck”, your loyalty to your failing country is clouding your view of what is correct. It’s not so much an issue of whether the warranty is transferable. People, whether stupid or not, value the automaker’s belief in itself when it offers longer warranties. Sure, one could statistically break down owner vs. leaser, then break down how long the owner will keep the vehicle and the cost of maintenance, blah, blah, blah … but what matters to many, not all, is the “reassurance” they get when they buy a new car with a longer warranty.

I don’t agree with your warranty claim argument. Any manufacturer would fight a free engine offer if you exceeded the mileage.

“Jimmy C”, I agree with your point about the Azeras and Amantis not being on everyone’s luxury wishlist … I just corrected you on your choice of the Elantra as an aspirational vehicle.

For you to say “there is no such thing as a desirable Korean automobile” is absolutely ridiculous. Compare any model from Korea versus any competing model from GM … there’s no way you can tell me GM outclasses the Koreans in design, build quality and engineering across the board.

I’ll ignore the rest of your post as others have offered enough for you to chew on.

I’m sorry for the slight on the Azera…I know everyone is lining up for miles to be on that ownership list. Let’s get realistic…there is NO SUCH THING as a desireable Korean automobile. As GM has the few “Best in Class” offerings, others have NONE. If you can find one automaker outside of maybe Bentley and RR that builds nothing but halo vehicles then you’ve got me. All I have to say is that within the largest automobile manufacturers in the world, GM certainly has the best all around offerings. In order to remain competitive in the market, you need such vanilla offerings to compete in the flooded $20,000 price category, and unfortunately, that kind of money won’t often buy the most “desireable” car. And if you want to know of the desireable cars GM has to offer, the list really isn’t too short…Corvette(of course), Escalade, the entire Cadillac V-series, The industry leading full size Chevrolet and GMC pickups, the FIRST IN SEGMENT power retractable hard top G6(under $30,000), the much anticipated new Camaro, and, by the way…that Pontiac Solstice GXP Turbo that just beat out the much more expensive Z4 and 350Z in Motor Trend(yes the import happy gearhead magazine). Focus on the necessary volume sales leading Impala, G6, Cobalt, Envoy, LaCrosse…etc…if you may, but you can not deny that GM is in the best position of the biggest automakers. Oh yeah,…Toyota is fast forwarding it’s inevitable loss of the “Best Quality” mirage with myriad recalls and problematic vehicles like the new Avalons and Camrys. I am not saying to bash all other companies, just get off of the media-hyped bandwagon that’s been brainwashing this country into believing that foreign cars are superior…THAT WAS 20 YEARS AGO!!!

As a GM sales person, I am very excited about this news. For the 2006 model year Buick announced 4/50000 bumper to bumper. My guess is that the other lines will follow shortly. If it weren’t for oil changes our shop would be empty. GM is cranking out some very fine vehicles as of late. Bravo!

this is the best coverage in the industry because it is trasferable. the problem people are to stupid to realize about the korean automobiles, are their warranties are not transferable and also you have to follow their maintence book exactly or they void your warranty. with gm their fluid are good for 100,000 or longer so you don’t have the cost of spark plugs, engine coolant service, trans fluid changes, drive belt replacements, which saves you well over $1000 over the course of ownership. if you go over 300 miles on an oil change with korean automobiles and you have an engine problem they will not cover it. plus considering that only 3% of their parts come from america and buying their cars in almost no way helps our country, I’ll be a loyal gm customer for life.

“1952 MG TD”, your logic is incorrect … if the Koreans have 1/5th the vehicles on the road, they better have decent product … or a high number of claims on those few vehicles would kill them.

Second, overhead isn’t a factor if you’ve built a decent product. Economies of scale should HELP companies of this size compared to the Koreans.

“Jimmy C”, I don’t deny that GM has an aspirational model in existence, although not as consequential as you make it out to be, but to use the Elantra analogy fails miserably … you should have brought up the Azera or the Amanti. Your last point, of desire, is far more important an issue. Outside of the few models you mentioned, I don’t see anything more desirable than any other car manufacturer offers.

100,000 miles?? That goes to show you that all GM cars are crap and might break something during 5 years driving time! Real smart, GM! Don’t make it too obvious and make it 60,000 miles.

Plus, those warrenties don’t matter to those who LEASE! I lease all the time and on the 8th vehicles in 8 years. NOT ONCE, my car was in the shop! NEVER! Everybody should lease a car!

My VW had a 100k powertrain warranty…unfortunately, everything else broke after the 2/24 B-B

GM should AT LEAST Bump up the B-B warranty to 4/50 and the premium to 6/72 or something in addition to the 100k powertrain. They do it on their USED cars for crissake!

Chysler pulled their 7/70 powertrain for the 2006 model year becauseresearch showed that it was a low priority for shoppers. why has that suddenly changed? i’m not so impressed by this move. increased bumper to bumper would have said something.

GM is doing what it needs to do to grow business and maintain relationships. Korean companies are trying to grow business solely on the basis of a warranty. When is the last time you heard someone say “When I get rich, I’m buying the new Elantra.”??? GM has products that people aspire to own. GM has the iconic cars that come up in everyday car conversation. The best sports car for the money-Corvette…The best SUV-Escalade…the best pickup trucks-Chevrolet and GMC. Warranty alone is not a reason to want a vehicle,…somewhere desire has to be involved.

With todays constructuion techniques, powertrains are so much more reliable. This is not like a big deal.

I want a warranty that takes care of the little nagging electronic problems that suck your wallet dry.
