Despite being only months away from production, General Motors has reportedly suspended plans to build a new seven-passenger MPV for its Chevrolet brand at the company’s Hamtramck, Michigan plant. The tall wagon was slated to begin production in the second quarter of 2009.
Codenamed MPV-7, the new people mover was slated to ride on GM’s Delta architecture – the same that will underpin the upcoming Chevy Cruze and Volt. Of note, GM’s Orlando show car is also based on GM’s Delta platform, but it remains unclear if the Orlando was intended to preview the now defunct North American built MPV.
However, the Wall Street Journal says that GM won’t completely abandon the compact MPV segment in North America. Instead of building the MPV-7 in the U.S., GM is planning to import a yet-to-be-named model from Asia, likely from the company’s Daewoo division. Although no model has been earmarked for the U.S. market, it’s quite possible we could see a Chevrolet -badged Daewoo Rezzo on our shores by mid-2009.
