Alonso's Indy 500 debut marred by Honda reliability woes

Formula 1 standout Fernando Alonso made headlines this weekend by skipping the Monaco Grand Prix to race in the Indianapolis 500. Alonso was competitive late into the race until, with just 21 laps to go, his Honda engine failed, making him the latest victim of the supplier's surprisingly sub-par reliability in the the 2017 IndyCar series. Teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay suffered the same fate.   


Mercedes compacts getting AMG lite treatment

AMG will offer mid-range variants of Mercedes-Benz's next crop of compact cars. The yet-unnamed models will be positioned between the regular Benz-branded cars and the full-blown AMG-tuned variants.


Final Indy 500 laps showcase Formula 1 talent

Former Formula 1 driver Takuma Sato joined the ranks of brick-kissers Sunday after a late-race charge to first place. The final 30 laps of the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 saw stand-out performances by current and former F1 drivers including Sato, Fernando Alonso, Max Chilton, Alexander Rossi and Juan Pablo Montoya.   


Formula 1: the rankings after Monaco

The Monaco Grand Prix was a decisive race for Ferrari. The team now leads the constructor championship with 196 points, a 17-point advantage over Mercedes-AMG. Red Bull is in third place with just 97 points. Similarly, Sebastian Vettel pulled ahead in the driver championship with 129 points. Mercedes-AMG pilots Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas are second and third with 104 and 75 points, respectively.   


Vettel wins Monaco Grand Prix

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel won this year's Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix. He finished just three seconds ahead of teammate Kimi Raikkonen. Third place went to Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo.   


Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.8 sells for $2.25 milllion

A 1993 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.8 with just six miles on the clock sold for $2.25 million at an auction. One of just 51 examples built, the RSR uses a naturally-aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six engine rated at 350 horsepower and 284 pound-feet of torque.   


BMW to show Z4 concept in Monterey?

BMW will preview the next-generation Z4 with a close-to-production concept, according to British magazine Autocar. The yet-unnamed design study will make its public debut in August at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The production model -- which is being co-developed with BMW -- will make its debut next year.   


Swiss castle barn finds sell for millions

12 high-end classic cars found gathering dust in a Swiss castle were auctioned off recently. The batch included a 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, a 1921 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Double Phaeton, a 1967 Maserati Quattroporte, and even a 1973 Ford Mustang. Collectively, the cars sold for about $2.3 million.   


BMW returning to Le Mans

BMW has confirmed it's making a long-awaited return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Munich-based company's next endurance racer will be based on the upcoming M8, and it will make its competition debut in late January 2018 at the Daytona 24 Hours.   


McLaren P1 LM sets new 'Ring record

The McLaren P1 LM has set a new Nurburgring record for street-legal cars. It lapped the grueling track in 6:43.22, which makes it a full nine seconds faster than the Lamborghini Huracan Performante.
