Ghosn wants GM tie-up to fight Toyota?

07/10/2006, 10:02 AM

By admin

While it’s clear GM’s financial situation could be improved with the help of the more financially stable Renault-Nissan alliance, it’s less obvious why CEO Carlos Ghosn is so anxious to tie the knot with the struggling American automaker. Many analysts say Renault-Nissan has little to gain from General Motors. However, Bloomberg speculates that Ghosn may wish to leverage GM’s capacity to do battle with Toyota. “Toyota is so dominant in the global car industry and they are growing so fast and so steadily that no one can really catch up,” said analyst Atsushi Osa. “Ghosn may want to use GM’s assets and resources against Toyota.” Ghosn could use GM’s idle manufacturing capacity to increase production cheaply, the report suggests. On Friday, GM said it would proceed with exploratory discussions with Renault and Nissan.

GM to fight Toyota? It’s like Mike Tyson to fight Stephen Hawking. GM is the mightiest powerhouse this universe has ever seen, everything else is crap!!1!!

The problem is that there may not be a long run if the Toyota threat is not dealt with. I don’t get Toyota. Every one of their vehicles that I’ve been in has felt sub-par (Lexus IS250, new camery, 4 runner)

I think it is a win-win for GM, Nissan, and Renault. Ideally they would engage in platform sharing, killing off all of the non successful product lines, and use their excess capacity to ramp up production and reduce prices.

…Dealership consolidation could be huge as well…

look how effectively the PR ****bags have managed to remove kerkorian’s name from this stock-price stunt.

NOW it’s GHOSN’s idea to use GM’s idle manufacturing capacity.

sure it is!

GM, if you do this, you’ll join the other companies ruined by Kerkorian on the ****heap of america’s capitalist excesses.

The second largest autombile market in the world is China. GM just recently vaulted past Volkswagen into the number one position. Toyota is eighth, and Nissan isn’t in the top ten.

Why would Nissan want to hook up with GM? China.

I guess Pearl Harbor has no meaning to those of you who only live in this great country, and do not appreciate it. I agree with ooodaddy. If you have no pride in our county and its many blessings why live here and eat our food, breathe our air, and soil our land that we have fought to defend? Take pride in our products, not that they are perfect but that they are ours. If they do not meet you expectations, then try to improve them.

Well its because you americans want japanese cars that their companies have grown so much. On top of that you are the reason why we have Lexus, Infinity and Acura. They sell more then Chrysler in america but it OK until they try buying and helping your brands. Then you remember Pearl Harbour and what they did.
You americans have no one else to blame for your sad industry state apart from yourselves.

I have changed my mind about this “alliance”… if the conditions are right and will help GM.. and not give control to Renault-Nissan and does not make GM’s vehicles crapy foreign cars, then I think GM should do it… and if the “alliance” will help GM and Nissan take out Toyota or at least lessen Toyota’s influence… more power to GM!! (gotta love GM!!)

GM is turning it around already, pretty soon they’ll have no unions to pay, better engineering, and it looks like Lutz is helping with the design of (some) of their cars – I think they could pull it out – and without help from French A Holes – they can go back to stitching their white flags – and the french can go F themselves.

GM is so far gone, it’ll be amazing if this Ghosn thing keeps the ship from sinking into oblivion. Of course I will never buy a Nissan if a partnership with GM arises from this. I have had way too many bad experiences with GM products to give them even a glimmer of a chance at selling me a car, Nissan parts in it or not.

There is no reason for some loser like Nissan should be riding on the shoulders of General Motors. GM is here because they belong here, they are American. Nissan has no right to be treading on our turf. Riding on the coattails of GM’s success won’t make them any less of an enemy to this country
