For those who don’t believe that 550bhp is enough for a luxury car, Maybach has announced a high-performance AMG version of the Maybach 57. AMG is the tuning division responsible for creating hotrod versions of Mercedes’ regular models. The Maybach 57 S, on sale now, is based on the “standard” 57, but its six-litre V12 Mercedes-AMG engine has been uprated to produce 612bhp, thanks partly to the addition of a second turbocharger. 0-62mph is covered in five seconds dead, while 0-124mph takes 15.8 seconds. Top speed is 171mph, and the dash from 50-75mph can be dealt with in 3.7 seconds. For improved handling, the 57 S has slightly stiffer suspension, rides 15mm lower, and has more sporty configuration of the Adaptive Damping ESP and ASR systems. The interior has been enhanced to include sportier rear seats to keep passengers securely in place during hard cornering. (On Monday, Maybach was named “the most prestigious brand” by the Luxury Institute).
