GM announces strategy to boost 2009 cash flow

07/15/2008, 9:53 AM

By Nick Aziz

General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner today announced a number of cost-saving and cash-raising moves that promise to help keep GM afloat through the current economic downturn. The company hopes to save $10 billion by making a number of changes to ongoing operations, and make $4-7 billion by selling assets (such as Hummer), and getting more financing.

Wagoner said GM says it has based its plan for the next year around $130 to $150 per barrel oil. While the economic situation could conceivably improve, GM isn’t taking any chances.

Operating Actions

  • GM won’t increase R&D spending as planned. Instead, spending will remain at 2006/2007 levels.
  • A major part of the reductions is related to the delay of the next generation large pickup and SUV program, as well as V8 engine development and associated capacity.
  • Powertrain spending will be increased to support development of alternative propulsion, fuel economy technologies, and small displacement engines.
  • Further plant closures and layoffs are possible. GM will be sitting down with plant leaders and unions soon.
  • GM will reduce salaried workers through normal attrition, early retirements, and mutual separation programs.
  • There will be no new base compensation increases for salaried employees for the remainder of 2008 and 2009.
  • There will be no cash bonuses for the company’s executive group in 2008. For top executives, this means a reduction of 75 to 84 percent in compensation.
  • Health care coverage for U.S. salaried retirees over 65 will be eliminated, effective January 1st. Affected retirees and surviving spouses will receive a pension increase from GM’s over funded U.S. salaried plan.
  • GM’s board decided to suspend future dividends on common stock, effective immediately.
  • $2 billion savings related to reduction of raw material, work-in-progress and finished goods inventory levels as well as lean inventory practices at parts warehouses.
  • GM will defer approximately $1.7 billion of payments that had been scheduled to be made to the UAW VEBA fund.

Asset Sales and Financing

  • GM expects to raise $2 to $4 billion from asset sales. GM reiterated it is considering a sale of the Hummer brand and “continuing to focus on profit improvement initiatives across all remaining GM brands.”
  • GM is targeting at least $2-3 billion of financing. The company says its $20 billion in assets would warrant even more financing, but sufficient liquidity can be achieved through those amounts.

“Our goal is to change the company for the long haul,” Wagoner said. The aim is “to set us up to be competitive for years to come,” he said.

“Our plan is not a plan to survive. It is a plan to win,” he concluded.

yes, but can they survive $200 oil, an auto market that will continue to shrink, collapsing financial systems, and vicious inflation in raw materials. Hell, I doubt many of us will survive the new depression of 2010 – 2012.

What a crack of crap! They should take off those rose glasses. Every energy analyst is predicting $225/barrel before things get better. We are already in $150/barrel market and there is absolutely no indication that market stabilized.

johnnycanuck, you are right cavity search is in order to find any sign of intelligence, never mind them keys!

This just in… GM has a plan! Seriously though… GM needs to cut R&D money on the Camaro… that’s where their entire 2006/07 R&D budget went… and the car still isn’t done.

Second restructuring plan in 2 months for GM. Its good they are making faster changes. But its bad that they needed this second strategy just over a month after the last strategy was announced.

Maybe Lutz is spending too much time flying his helicopter around and not enough time overseeing the business.

I like how they try to sell the plan by mentioning the temporary hold on cash bonuses and how that reduces compensation by 75%. The execs will still be making a good 6 figures without the cash bonuses. Its not like they are struggling on 6 figures in Detroit (low cost of living city). Plus they were very careful to list only cash bonuses as there are more bonuses than just cash – so its not like they are not getting any bonuses.

Lutz and his crew have collected a paycheck years after they should have been kicked to the curb. They have been slow to react to market conditions while other automakers have consistently beat GM to the punch.

GM needs new leadership now. And they need to declare bankruptcy protection so they can force a renegotiation of their contracts.

In other words “Just wait till next year!”

Oh wait, they already used that the past 5 years. Hey GM, how about another “Road to Redemption” campaign telling your previous loyal fanbase (like myself) that everything built before now has been not-so-great in the quality and dependibility dept.

Start with the Lambda utes with the camshaft problems, nerve racking sporatic transmissions and water leaks. Go from there.

Sounds like you guys are a bunch of “Arm Chair” CEO’s and have all of the answers. Have any of you guys sent your resumes to the manufacturers yet? At least they are attempted to do something about the problems they are facing without taking the easy way out…declaring bankruptcy. Alot of the problems that the manufacturers are facing are from decisions that were made 5 or 10 years ago by previous regimes, it takes a while to turn a boat that big around. It’s not like they work at McDonaldss and the new burger isn’t working, they can’t just take the pre-ordered burger patties and pickles and turn them into a big mac.

First get rid of the Hummer, that would help. Stop making trucks because you get dominated year after year.
Come out with something thats somewhat attractive, not the Volt and Cruze.
The Camaro should be out by now, its been in the works for 5 years. My guess is youll ask over sticker, shoot yourself in the foot, and not end up selling many. For the price it is definately under powered.

lol at a Ford guy making fun of GM’s products. You got your own problems to worry about boy. And do more research before you post. The Camaro has been in the ‘works’ for only 2 years. It came out as a ‘concept’ three years ago to see interest level and from there became a development project.

And get over you self and you fleet inflated #’s. GM is still #1 overall. Who is THIRD NOW? Oh yea, Ford. :)

I give credit to them for at least doing something and something big and what will hit many of GM top and middle brass hard. We have three hybrids in 2009 at Chevy with best in class Fuel Economy for All SUV’s, Trucks and the new Cobalt has better Fuel Economy then the Focus, Civic or Corolla.

GM may not be the best at all they do. No one is. Toyota has seen its quality go down. Malibu got the JD Power and Associates Best Mid-Size initial quality award. The Haters can keep on hating, but of all the big boys, Toy, GM, Ford and Chrysler I’ll put my money with GM to make it out of this recession the best along with Toyota. Ford and Chrysler may or may not make it, and will have to do alot to survive.

*BRADLEY GT* Are you crazy, insane or delusional? GM sells more vehciles BECAUSE THEY OWN TWICE AS MANY COMPANYS!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHA that was a hard one to over come. What is one good thing GM has in the works? Please amuse me, tell me some bright ideas that might save there company. The cruze? or the Volt? HAHAHAHAH Come on. Whats Sad is Gm combines Chevy and Gm truck sales and they STILL LOSE. Get your facts straight buddy, Ford is obviously leading the way for the big 3. The new taurus is going to dominate. Theres been nothing but hype surrounding it. The new 08 focus is leading small size sedans in domestic sales. Ohh and the european verion will be arriving shortly. Ya know the same european focus, that is dominating Europe. HAHAHA how about the fiesta????? How quickly you forget. The Fiesta and the Taurus Will dominate the Volt and Cruze. You know it and i know it. GM gets good fuel economy? Again, you prove my point your medication obviously isn’t working. Flex fuel is obviously helping GM. Wreeeeeehhhhh. Ohh and the tahoe hybrid was a great idea with an average mpg of 21. Lets spend 6 grand more for a hybrid that gets 2 miles more per gallon. Your also mentioning a GM that took the second biggest loss next to chrysler this quarter. Your an idiot and should consemplate OD’g in your sugar pills. Obviously if you were medicated you wouldnt make such foolish comments :)

lol…sugar pills that make you go wreeeeehhhhhh! i like it Ihustle! pass some my way dude!

and the Tahoe Hybrid gets 6 MPG better in the city, and yes only 2 mpg better HWY. BUT check out the reviews and talk to customers (i have sold two of them) and most say they are getting around 24-26 AVERAGE! but yea, you are right its not worth it if you don’t plan on keeping the Tahoe for at least 4 years to pay it self off, but as gas prices keep going up it will take less. NO Hybrid is going to be less expensive the first couple years.

and your views and opinions on the Focus/Taurus etc are just that. So bend over and go wreeeeeeeeeehhhhhhh and share some more of them! :)
