GM avoids strike at Malibu plant….again

04/25/2008, 1:31 PM

By Drew Johnson

General Motors has once again avoided a strike at its Fairfax production facility in Kansas City, Kansas. Earlier this week GM and the UAW agreed to a two day extension on labor talks, and the UAW has once again agreed to another extension.

According to the Associated Press, the UAW will give GM a 12-hour notice if it does decide to strike. While the UAW and GM agreed to a national contract last year, several UAW locals — including the one that staffs the Fairfax plant — have yet to ink local agreements.

“As long as talks continue and progress is made, workers will continue to work and the strike will be avoided,” the union local said in the statement. “If negotiations do happen to break down there will be a 12-hour notice given before a strike could take place.”

The Fairfax plant produces the hot-selling Chevrolet Malibu.

The UAW Local 730 agreed to a similar agreement. Local 730 staffs GM’s stamping plant in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

I guess GM learned how to grease local union officials. After 100 years in business not too soon.
