GM bankruptcy talks not slowing Chevrolet Volt development
By Drew JohnsonGeneral Motors has cut the cord on several models for 2010 – including the Chevrolet Impala SS, Cobalt SS Sedan, Pontiac G6 GXP and Cadillac STS-V – but the Detroit automaker says the revolutionary Chevrolet Volt is still on schedule for a November 2010 launch, despite the company’s delicate financial position.
GM spokesman Tom Stephens revealed earlier this week that the Chevrolet Volt program has not been altered due to GM’s current financial woes, and the plug-in EV will make it to market by late next year. “At this point in time, I know of no reason why we can’t be in production by November of 2010,” Stephens told Automotive News.Stephens said GM is currently deciding on which other brand should get a vehicle based on the Volt’s Voltec technology. With Saab, Saturn and Pontiac off the table, the Volt’s counterpart will be given to either Cadillac, Buick or GMC.
“We have to consider what is the usage of the person buying the vehicle,” he said of the decision making process. “For a commuter who drives 40 miles a day and takes it shopping on weekend, it’s the perfect application.”
Despite Stephens’ anonymity, insiders say GM has already given the green light to the Cadillac Converj.
