General Motors has officially opened the doors to its renovated Spring Hill Manufacturing facility. Once a factory for the Saturn brand, the Tennessee plant is now cranking out GM's latest 2.5L Ecotec four-cylinder engine.

GM spent $460 million to update the Spring Hill facility to make it one of the most flexible engine plants in the industry. That money was also used to improve the plant's environmental standing. The factory now employees high-efficiency lighting - which should save GM $800,000 per year - and the facility's floor was redone with recycled concrete.

"This state-of-the-art engine plant builds on GM Spring Hill Manufacturing's reputation for producing high-quality, fuel-efficient 4-cylinder engines," said GM Manufacturing Manager Arvin Jones.

There are currently 188 employees building 2.5L engines for the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu at the Spring Hill plant, but GM says that figure will grow to 450. Even more jobs could be added if there is strong demand for the new Ecotec engine.
