GM begins hiring replacements for union workers

05/24/2006, 4:57 PM

By admin

General Motors began hiring temporary workers for some U.S. plants to replace union employees leaving because of buyouts and retirement incentives, reports Bloomberg. One Michigan UAW rep said 300 of his 2,800 members have taken the buyouts and at least 700 were interested. That means GM will be left with a shortage of workers in many areas. Temporary workers will make an estimated $16 to $17 an hour. A UAW assembly worker earns about $27.

$27 an hour to start?!? I’m struggling to get a job that pays $20/hour (with or without benefits) out here in SoCal and I have a degree (business) AND computer background. And union workers wonder why most Americans are not quite supportive :(

Best news for GM this year. Keep on buying the terds off and hire fresh meat that works for much less.

that’s because the standards of living in NorCal is a lot higher. If I remember correctly, it cost the most to live in SF.

Was a story way back when about sex abuse in the Chrysler/Mitsu plant in Normal, Ill. Apparently it had been going on for years and when I questioned why the women would let it go on so long they said the people there were making as much as $30 an hour (this was like 8 or 9 years ago) and they were afraid of losing their jobs in a part of the country where people were actually making minimum wage. You could rent an apartment out there then for like $350 a month so I imagine making that much hourly meant you could live like a king.

Shame what money will do to some people.

If they were smart, like meat packing or chicken prosessing; they’d call Vincente Fox and request more border swimmers.

Being a GM hourly employee that has less than ten years. There is nothing wrong with temps right now because those jobs will not be there for long. I started as a temp on and off for 2years. Now i work in a tranmission plant and on my line we run 180 transmissions a hour. and my job is to put a 49lb torque converter in each. I would say i earn my pay!
