I also didn't say it wasn't the CAW's fault. I said I can understand why they're pissed. Signing a contract today, ahead of schedule and without even a thought of a strike, and having your job axed the next and production moved to another country would certainly feel like a betrayal. It's sadly not surprising, since Canada is now one of the most expensive places on earth to build a car.

Random Jerk, you came with an opinion piece from the Toronto Star. Far from facts. My local Liquor Store carries beer from all over as well, and I already said Molson was Moose piss. Try something that isn't American owned. Keith's and Olands are a good start. Anything, and I mean anything, made by Garrison Brewing in Halifax, Kokanee has a lot of fans, though I think it's as week as Coors. Propeller, Rickards Red (and that is Molson), Sleemans Cream Ale. I still drink English Beer (Newcastle and Boddingtons) more often than not, but short of Samuel Addams, It'll be a shock if I ever taste a US ale and don't want to puke up the suds of the beer/club soda hybrid.

Subsidise? What part of my life is subsidised? Oh, because I live in Canada I get $17 a week each for my kids. Everything here is taxed to hell, and costs more than it does in the US, no matter how the exchange goes. Subsidies my ass. My pay isn't subsidised, my house isn't, my car isn't, my business expenses aren't.

The only people to blame for this is GM dumping too much money into their trucks and not enough into developing small fuel efficient cars. Having trucks is ok, but do not base your company off selling that product.

Oldraven, that cracked me up but your loyalty is misplaced, the only beer worth talking about comes from Belgium.
.
There's folk on here saying its not the unions' fault and complaining about GM still producing these trucks in Mexico. Who's fault is it that GM would prefer to build these trucks in Mexico than in Canada? Who fought to ensure that CAW workers are much more expensive than Mexicans?
.
Its not about whether the assembly workers have an education or not, its about them and their leaders at the unions realising that in a global market they are competing with a new world of cheap labour. Short term uncompromising thinking by self-indulgent unions and their membership gives companies in a failing economy and a shrinking market little choice but to build their increasingly irrelevant trucks elsewhere.
.
400horseSS, you were sat on your arse doing nothing for weeks, and now you want to accuse buyers of foreign cars of causing this problem?

Oldraven, you couldn't tie your goddamn shoelaces if your country didn't subsidize it. America is one of the few (if only) places where I can go to my local liquor store and buy ANY beer from ANY country I want. So, yes, some of us DO know about beer, enough to know that nothing good comes from Canada in that regard, especially Moose-piss Molson. As a matter of fact I have some Hinano beer from Tahiti, and a bottle of Orion from Japan in the fridge right now. Niether is very good, but worth the try.

So 400SS, is that the plant you work in, the one west of St Lois I drove past? I watched Hoffa last night and it was pretty damn good. I don't mind union guys like that, just the one'sthat use the it's not my job excuse. The guys at this plant got screwed hard, GM doesn't have to hire them, they hire them because they offer a BETTER DEAL.

Union Members may not have designed or engineered the Trucks/SUVs that aren't selling anymore, but it is their high-wages and benefits and things like overly restrictive workscopes that forced the Domestics to have to turn to those high-margin vehicles in order to generate profits.

It's not like the Domestics couldn't make a good compact or mid-size sedan. It's that they couldn't do it and make money at it, which is kind of an important part of doing business. When you've got to pay more than $1000 more per car in labor costs, that $1000 has to come out of the materials that go into the car to even hope to remain competitive -- you're instantly behind the curve. So you turn to a segment that there's little competition in so you can pass your higher labor costs onto the customer without having to worry much about being undercut. Only after making huge cuts in their workforce numbers and pay have they (at least Ford and GM) been able to churn out competitive models in the small and midsize segments.

The Union's not entirely at fault, no. If nothing else, the automakers AGREED to pay them that much. But the Union isn't blameless either. Just because you just turn a wrench doesn't mean you don't play a part in the engineering of that car -- Every single dollar paid to you is a dollar that can't go into making that car better. If your company has to pay you $10/hour more in wages/benefits than the competition that's a HUGE sum of money. In fact for just one factory of 3000 workers, it works out to a staggering $400 MILLION in extra costs incurred between each 6-year redesign of a model (3000 workers * 10 dollars * 8 hours * 260 days * 6 years). If you've got another plant making that model, that's almost a BILLION dollars. That's a whole lot of money that could be put into making that car better.

Just think, if GM would have taken some of that money they made of of their fat margin trucks/SUVs and invested some into making a *real* competitor to the Civic and Corolla they would have been ready for this shakeup.

What would an American know about beer? Lets ask the Toronto Star...

What the fuck would an American know about Beer? Do they even allow real beer into your nation, or are you basing your opinion on the disgusting horse piss known as Molson Canadian? Are you going to tell the Europeans how to loose weight, whilst you're at it?

Even the most ardent basher can't blame the union for this 400SS. They did not design, engineer or market the vehicles their plant produces; much like the rest of the good soldiers in life they simply did what they were told. However, don't blame the buying public either, because if car sales are like an election then all they might be guilty of is voting with their wallets instead of their hearts. Remember, unlike the union membership, they do have a choice.

The greedy drunks at the union are only a small part of the blame this time, really. The product just ain't selling, and the Candadian dollar being on a par with the greenback really makes manufacturing in the land of terrible beer a bad deal too. Maybe all those guys getting laid off can go dig some oily sand...??

They're suppose to be building hybrid trucks there and they take it from them anyway? Motoracer is a little whiny @$$, I'd like to know what exactly he races since I raced motocross for almost 20 years since the time I was 10. I was up in St Lois last week for company buisiness and drove out to Wentzville and checked out the GM plant there, is that where you work 400? Why is it off of "mexico" road??? Anywhere, pretty impressive looking from the outside. Now go fry me up my Whopper with cheese motoricer and you better be wearing the BK hat or it's your @$$!

As much as I agree that GM has to cut back on dead sales, it's the fact that the trucks they were promised will be built in Mexico in stead. It's not that they aren't building the vehicles anymore, just not there. Yeah, that would piss me off too.

BTW, who can point out some of these numerous strikes the CAW have had recently? I seem to remember the UAW striking at every turn and the CAW signing contracts months in advance with no drama whatsoever.

It's not like we didn't tell the union they were ripping their britches.
Now - what effect have they had on the U.S. economy?
Hummmm

I would agree with everyone sentiment that CAW and UAW called it upon themselves. However, I would like to remind everyone that co-CEO's got their full pay restored few weeks ago, which measured in 7 digit numbers. And that dynamic duo is very responsible for that shape the company is in right now. Nobody fired those brainniacs and the whole useless board with them. It would tremendous cost saving measure and nobody would even noticed.

They promised them work before the truck sales fell off a cliff! I guess the CAW expects GM to keep on producing trucks and let them rust on the lots just to keep them happy. The devil has exacted its due on the UAW for decades of excess and now it is the CAW's turn.

Unfortunately the hybrid trucks they promised them are not selling well. While the large SUV and PU truck volumes are down they are still selling to those who need them. Gas is an issue but not enough to spend the extra money to increase MPG.
.
What is so funny is folks are giving away their trucks to save money on gas yet they are losing much more in the sales price than whatever they saved in gas by going to smaller vehicles.

no need to feel sorry for the greet union workers who whine like babies, and have poor work ethics. These guys made more money than they deserved. I earn my money because I went to university, and did another 3 years of specialized schooling to get to my position. These assembly line workers only have a highschool education because they were too stupid and lazy to get off their beer drinking asses to better themselves, so they got luck by having a job at a car company. But that wasn't enought, they wanted more money for less work so they can go home get drunk while watching nascar.
