It's not like the Domestics couldn't make a good compact or mid-size sedan. It's that they couldn't do it and make money at it, which is kind of an important part of doing business. When you've got to pay more than $1000 more per car in labor costs, that $1000 has to come out of the materials that go into the car to even hope to remain competitive -- you're instantly behind the curve. So you turn to a segment that there's little competition in so you can pass your higher labor costs onto the customer without having to worry much about being undercut. Only after making huge cuts in their workforce numbers and pay have they (at least Ford and GM) been able to churn out competitive models in the small and midsize segments. The Union's not entirely at fault, no. If nothing else, the automakers AGREED to pay them that much. But the Union isn't blameless either. Just because you just turn a wrench doesn't mean you don't play a part in the engineering of that car -- Every single dollar paid to you is a dollar that can't go into making that car better. If your company has to pay you $10/hour more in wages/benefits than the competition that's a HUGE sum of money. In fact for just one factory of 3000 workers, it works out to a staggering $400 MILLION in extra costs incurred between each 6-year redesign of a model (3000 workers * 10 dollars * 8 hours * 260 days * 6 years). If you've got another plant making that model, that's almost a BILLION dollars. That's a whole lot of money that could be put into making that car better. The devil has exacted its due on the UAW for decades of excess and now it is the CAW's turn. They promised them work before the truck sales fell off a cliff! I guess the CAW expects GM to keep on producing trucks and let them rust on the lots just to keep them happy. While the large SUV and PU truck volumes are down they are still selling to those who need them. Gas is an issue but not enough to spend the extra money to increase MPG. . What is so funny is folks are giving away their trucks to save money on gas yet they are losing much more in the sales price than whatever they saved in gas by going to smaller vehicles. These guys made more money than they deserved. I earn my money because I went to university, and did another 3 years of specialized schooling to get to my position. These assembly line workers only have a highschool education because they were too stupid and lazy to get off their beer drinking asses to better themselves, so they got luck by having a job at a car company. But that wasn't enought, they wanted more money for less work so they can go home get drunk while watching nascar. no need to feel sorry for the greet union workers who whine like babies, and have poor work ethics.
